This past weekend at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro revealed exciting new details about what’s coming to Walt Disney World. In addition to getting up close and personal with monsters and villains, soon you’ll be able to explore the uncharted territory of the great outdoors with an expansion in Frontierland themed around Pixar Animation Studios’ “Cars.” It’s time to leave Radiator Springs and head west into exciting new locations. To make way for this completely new frontier, the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island will be transformed into vast and rugged terrains for a rally race with some of the world’s most iconic racers. “We are thrilled to create this original Cars adventure and put our guests in the driver’s seat as we—quite literally—explore a new frontier in Frontierland,” shared Michael Hundgen, Walt Disney World Portfolio Executive Producer at Walt Disney Imagineering. “Part of pioneering this new story includes tapping into the themes of exploration and adventure that inspire so many of us to keep propelling forward. Anytime we touch Magic Kingdom, we recognize the massive responsibility that exists to get it right and tell stories that connect with our guests.” The new area will bring you along for the ride (pun intended) with a brand-new thrilling rally race through the mountains, climbing trails, and dodging geysers, in addition to a second attraction geared towards fun for the whole family. Ahead of work revving into high gear next year, guests will have plenty of time to experience the charm and nostalgia of Frontierland as it is today. And cruising just around the bend, guests will be able to venture Beyond Big Thunder Mountain into an all-new land dedicated to Disney Villains. Inspired by the wicked characters fans know and loathe, the multi-acre expansion will include two major attractions, plus dining and shopping. Walt Disney Imagineering is pushing creative boundaries to dark and mysterious levels to bring this new, first-of-its-kind land to life. Together, these new additions to Magic Kingdom will represent the largest expansion in park history. But that’s not all happening at The Most Magical Place on Earth. During Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase, Josh revealed additional attractions and enhancements coming soon to Disney World. Monsters, Inc. Land – It’s laughter they’re after when a new space dedicated to Sulley, Mike, and all the other scarers jokesters arrive at Hollywood Studios. Reimagined Test Track presented by Chevrolet – Racing into EPCOT in 2025, the attraction will open celebrating the past, present, and future of automation. Tropical Americas — Get ready to explore a new corner of Disney’s Animal Kingdom when two new attractions open, themed around Indiana Jones and Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Encanto.” Zootopia: Better Zoogether — Join Judy Hopps and Nick Wilde next winter in a new show at the Tree of Life Theater. First, we learned that an all-new Lion King Land is on the horizon in Disney Adventure World! “As our friend Rafiki would say, ‘It is time’,” exclaimed Josh D’Amaro, Disney Experiences Chairman. Guests can follow Simba’s journey from cub to king when the first-ever attraction inspired by Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “The Lion King” debuts at Disney Adventure World in Paris. The new Lion King Land will have you exploring the Price Lands with new areas of dining, shopping, and attractions. There will be characters, and the land will be set at Pride Rock (which looks to be a new log-plume style ride). Potential new ride at ‘Lion King’ Land The second announcement for Disney Adventure World is that a second new land will be joining the Lion King. World of Frozen will be coming to the park in 2026! World of Frozen, a land themed to Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Frozen” will open alongside the debut of the park’s new name, Disney Adventure World, in 2026. Disney recently opened World of Frozen in Hong Kong Disney, and this new Disneyland Paris land looks like it may be a similar concept. We’re excited to have another park representing an entire dedicated land to Frozen! Both of these new lands will be added to Disney Adventure World (currently Walt Disney Studios Park). With so many exciting announcements shared during Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase, Disney Imagineers couldn’t miss an opportunity to give our biggest fans a closer look at what we’re working on. This morning, guests attending D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event can visit the show floor to see new additions to the Imagineering: Behind The Dreams pavilion. Here’s a look at some of the most anticipated projects in development. Welcome to Pueblo Esperanza A new adventure awaits at Pueblo Esperanza at Disney’s Animal Kingdom with a new addition themed around Tropical Americas, the area just north and south of the equator in the Western Hemisphere — from the northern part of South America stretching up into Central America. This exciting location gives Imagineers so much to play with when bringing timeless stories to life, like Indiana Jones exploring a recently excavated, ancient Maya temple or magical Casita of the Madrigal family from Walt Disney Animation Studios Oscar award-winning film “Encanto.” Imagineers created a model of Casita, including a magical candle and nods to the home’s vibrant personality with fluttering shutters. To ensure the authenticity of the Tropical Americas, Imagineers conducted numerous research trips, drawing inspiration from various places, including Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, to authentically reflect the region’s people, architecture, and more. Their efforts are reflected in a stunning model of the land, featuring a large fountain in the center where the villagers like to gather and tell stories. The model even features a special lighting effect around the fountain! Additionally, a woodcarver has created a giant working carousel featuring his favorite animals from Disney stories like Kevin from the Pixar Animation Studios film “Up,” who’s displayed showcasing the woodcarver’s expert craftmanship. It’s a new take on a classic attraction that young families are going to love! First Suspended Coaster in a Disney park During D23 Event 2024, Josh D’Amaro revealed plans to build a Monsters, Inc.-inspired area, including an attraction that lets you take a look inside the factory from the Pixar film. To ideate the layout of the attraction, the project team created a study model of the attraction, enabling them to fine-tune every detail. If you’ve ever dreamed of riding through the door vault, as Sulley and Mike did in the film, this is what you’ve been waiting for! As the first suspended coaster in a Disney park, this attraction will put you right in the middle of the action and have you roaring with laughter. Ideating New “Avatar” Experiences We’re venturing further into Pandora with a new destination at Disney California Adventure. Within the pavilion, Imagineers have created a “working desk” display, showcasing the inspiration and creative tools the project team is using to brainstorm future developments. Bringing the Pride Lands to Disneyland Paris Guests at Disneyland Paris will get to experience the classic Walt Disney Animation Studios film “The Lion King” unlike ever before! Dedicated to the characters and stories from the film, Pride Lands, a new park area in Disney Adventure World will include themed dining, shopping, and the opportunity to meet some favorite characters, along with a new attraction. Imagineers have created a model that beautifully showcases both the area’s development and the new attraction. The level of detail in this model is truly breathtaking! Eagle-eyed fans may notice some familiar markings on rocks throughout the model. These new additions to “Imagineering: Behind the Dreams” are just a glimpse of the work Imagineers are doing! Every week, we report the average Disney World wait times in every park so that you can be prepared for your next trip to Orlando! Last week saw an interesting pattern develop, and we need to talk about it. Hollywood Studios Disney World had a bit of a bizzare week, as far as wait times go. Most were generally up at the resort, especially at EPCOT, but the Magic Kingdom saw some bizarre fluctuations. Is this an effect of the new Lighting Lane Multi Pass system? Possibly. We also got new concept art for the ride featuring Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus. The idea for the Marvel area at Hong Kong Disneyland is that Tony Stark has chosen Hong Kong as the Asian headquarters for Stark Industries. It will also become home to the Stark Expo, showcasing all the latest Stark Industries tech. The new ride will star Peter Parker, whose come to the Stark Expo to show off his latest piece of tech. However, this attracts Spider-Man’s archnemesis, Doctor Octopus, who causes some trouble. Peter will need your help to protect his new tech and stop the villain. ©Disney Hong Kong Disneyland has previously added more Marvel to its parks, including two Marvel-themed experiences, Iron Man Experience and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Nano Battle! We’ve got a case of the Disney Treasure on the brain! ©Disney And it makes sense because this brand-new ship coming to the Disney Cruise Line fleet has so many new things for us to experience, like the Aristocats-themed lounge and Haunted Mansion Parlor. We’re just beside ourselves with all the excitement. But before we get too far ahead, and since we’re talking about these lounges and the food they’re going to have there, it got us thinking about another experience that’s unique to the Disney Cruise Line — rotational dining. Let’s talk about it and see if you should skip it or not! First things first, let’s break down what rotational dining is all about. What is Rotational Dining? On the Disney Treasure (and the other ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet), rotational dining means that each night of your cruise, you’ll rotate through three distinct, themed restaurants. What’s even cooler is that your servers rotate with you, which means you’ll get consistent, personalized service throughout your trip. The rotational dining restaurants on board the Treasure will be Plaza de Coco, Worlds of Marvel, and 1923. ©Disney Pros of Rotational Dining Variety. It Keeps Your Life Spicy! In our opinion, one of the biggest perks of rotational dining is the variety. So, instead of having to stick to one dining spot for the whole cruise, you get to experience three unique environments, each with its own vibe and menu. Disney World has the best rides, right?! Jungle Cruise And we’re not all just about the brand new rides like Tiana’s Bayou Adventure or TRON Lightcycle / Run. No, even the classics like Peter Pan’s Flight or the Mad Tea Party can still slap. Now that got us thinking about your next trip especially if you’re a true fan of the Jungle Cruise and you’re counting down the days until your next voyage, there’s this one rule that every Cast Member at Jungle Cruise is begging you not to break. Let’s talk about it! What’s that rule at Jungle Cruise in Magic Kingdom that has Disney World Cast Members begging that you don’t break it? Well, actually, we’ve got a couple of them. Let’s dive right in. Don’t Touch the Water First things first, we’ve got to talk about the water. The murky waters of the Amazon (or wherever your skipper claims you are) might look inviting, but trust us, you do NOT want to be dipping your fingers in it. Jungle Cruise It’s not a petting zoo, people! There are might be unseen dangers just beneath the surface. Plus, who knows what kind of germs are floating around in there too? Let’s keep those hands inside the boat, okay? Don’t Block the View Without question, one of the greatest highlights of the Jungle Cruise is the moment you get to see the legendary backside of water. It’s a marvel, a wonder, and it just might bring a tear to your eye kind of moment! But it’s hard to capture if someone’s blocking your view. Jungle Cruise Let’s be considerate of our fellow passengers. Everyone deserves a shot of that glorious H2O magic. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy that watery wonder of the world. Respect the Wildlife Yes, the elephants are cute, and the lions look oh so majestic. But remember, even though they’re made of metal and wires, they deserve our respect. Please, oh please, don’t throw anything at them. Jungle Cruise elephants Those animatronics are pieces of Disney history, and should be treated with care. Plus, do you really want to be the person who damaged a Jungle Cruise lion? We sure don’t! Watch Your Kids Disney World is such a great place for families, and we love that, but let’s be clear that your skippers are not babysitters. We have to keep an eye on our little explorers at all times. Jungle Cruise Skipper This isn’t just for their safety, but for everyone’s enjoyment. The last thing we want is for something to happen to a child (that’s no fun for anyone). So, let’s make sure our kiddos are seated and safe, and let the skippers focus on navigating those “treacherous” waters and delivering their “legendary” punchlines. Don’t Stand Up We get it. This one might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people forget those three simple words. Don’t. Stand. Up. The Jungle Cruise boats are designed for sitting. Jungle Cruise Standing up on one of them can throw off the balance of the boat and, in the worst-case scenario, you might end up taking an unexpected swim. Fair warning if you’re traveling to Disney World this fall. Magic Kingdom On the surface, September 2024 seems like a great time to visit Walt Disney World. Crowds should be thinner than the busy summer season, and the heat will be much more manageable (though you’ll likely see some rain). Plus both the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival and Halloween season — including Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party — will be in full swing. However, there’s something you need to know: Some of the parks’ most popular rides will be CLOSED. Some of the attractions on Disney World’s September refurbishment calendar include: The Jungle Cruise The Magic Kingdom’s iconic take on the Disneyland original is closing on August 26th for an indeterminate amount of time. Disney says, “The attraction is scheduled to reopen for Guests before the winter holidays begin at Walt Disney World.” That’s when we should see the ride turn into Jingle Cruise, the decked-out holiday version! Jungle Cruise Test Track One of EPCOT’s most iconic rides has been closed since June 17th. The attraction is going through a massive refurbishment that will see it transformed into what many have dubbed Test Track 3.0. As that nomenclature would imply, the new version of Test Track will be the third incarnation of the ride since its late ’90s opening. According to Disney, this latest redone Test Track the new sets and effects seem to call back to the classic EPCOT attraction World of Motion. While the ride has no official reopening date, we expect the closure will stretch until 2025. Test Track under construction Blizzard Beach As has become the norm at Walt Disney World in recent years, only one of the resort’s two water parks is open at a given time. This September, Typhoon Lagoon will be operating while Blizzard Beach will be shuttered. We’re curious to see if that “one open, one closed” strategy changes in 2025 when the water parks will presumably see a spike in demand when Disney’s new “free water park ticket on the day you arrive” perk for hotel guests goes into effect. Blizzard Beach Water Park September will see several popular attractions closed at Walt Disney World, which is sure to affect guest flow and wait times. Joe Rohde’s remarkable four decades-long career at Walt Disney Imagineering was no small feat. Before his retirement in 2021, Joe’s creative and visionary spirit blazed a trail of inspiring experiences, attractions and even theme parks that have captured the hearts and imaginations of millions around the globe. This year, his work and dedication to The Walt Disney Company will be recognized and celebrated, as he’ll be named a Disney Legend alongside 13 other aspirational individuals at the celebratory ceremony on August 11, as part of D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. Joe’s journey as an Imagineer is a testament to his power of passion, creativity, and storytelling. These guiding principles have influenced each of his projects, bringing a sense of wonder and adventure, and inviting guests to embark on immersive journeys unlike any other. After graduating from Occidental College, Joe went back to teach art, art history and set design for musicals at his old high school, Chaminade College Preparatory. During this time, a Disney executive and parent of one of his students spoke with him about joining Walt Disney Imagineering. He was hesitant at first, but later decided to put together a portfolio of his set design work that eventually got him an entry level job in the model room and later as a scenic painter where he worked on the Mexico pavilion in EPCOT. Not too soon after, he found himself using his eye for design on a variety of projects across Disney parks and experiences domestically including the Norway pavilion in EPCOT and the reimagination of Fantasyland at Disneyland Park. His work on those projects earned him the honor of lead designer for a fourth theme park at Walt Disney World Resort. The park would serve as a lush sanctuary dedicated to the celebration and conservation of Earth’s diverse creatures and ecosystems. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park opened to the public in 1998 and has become a staple to the resort, educating guests on the beauty of the world’s natural environment and exciting them with thrilling attractions like Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain and Pandora – The World of Avatar. But he wasn’t done yet: Joe’s impact extends far beyond the creation and development of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. He was one of the lead designers for Aulani, A Disney Resort and Spa on O’ahu, Hawai’i and helped design Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! in Disney California Adventure Park at Disneyland Resort. Internationally, Joe even served as the model for Harrison Hightower, the owner of the fictional “Hightower Hotel” at the Tower of Terror attraction at Tokyo DisneySea at Tokyo Disney Resort. Joe has always held an unwavering dedication to conservation and his community and is well renowned for integrating these passions not only across his various projects at The Walt Disney Company but also in other various aspects of his life. For this reason, he was instrumental in the creation of the Disney Conservation Fund, and his efforts have helped to raise over $125 million in grants for projects worldwide. In 2022, only a year after his retirement, he received the Disney Conservation Fund’s first Conservation Legacy Award for all his dedicated work for the environment. In his free time, Joe is still a strategic advisor for both Walt Disney Imagineering and commercial space travel company Virgin Galactic and continues to be inspired by the world around us – here on Earth and in space. Looking at Joe Rohde’s extraordinary journey, he embodies the transformative power of imagination and the enduring legacy of impactful storytelling. His contributions have served as a reminder to dream, explore, and create without limits. Name: Email: The very first Marvel ride EVER is coming to Shanghai Disneyland, and it’s going to be a Spider-Man roller coaster! The new ride will be “a high-energy thrill coaster” with a Spider-Man theme and will include a “high-speed, fully immersive experience.” Seriously, Disney, you had us at “Spider-Man roller coaster. Disney also revealed some concept art of what the ride will look like. ©Disney The announcement was made at Disney’s recent Parks and Experiences panel, “Horizons,” at D23 where Disney revealed a TON of news about upcoming rides, lands, and more coming to Disney parks and Disney Cruise Line. The coaster will start with a story where Spider-Man “has gotten himself in a bit of a tight spot,” so you’ll have to follow him around at high speeds to help get him out of trouble. FUN. ©Disney The initial construction preparation work for the new ride is already underway, so this is another project Disney is actively working on RIGHT NOW. Other projects happening at Shanghai Disney Resort include a third hotel located next to the Shanghai Disneyland Hotel. We finally have DinoLand, U.S.A. news! DinoLand, U.S.A. Disney had a BUSY night on August 10th at the Disney Experiences Showcase: Horizons at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. We heard HUGE news about Disney parks, cruise ships, and even video games. Disney dropped new nighttime entertainment coming to Magic Kingdom, new lands headed to Magic Kingdom, and, of course, they talked about the re-theming of DinoLand, U.S.A. in Animal Kingdom. Different concepts were suggested, but most recently it was confirmed that the land would focus on the Tropical Americas. Teams of Imagineers have been off on trips studying the biodiversity of these areas to bring the new land to life. However, the Disney stories that would call this new land home had not yet been confirmed, though there was a lot of speculation. Concept art for DinoLand expansion ©Disney However, at the Horizons showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Disney has officially confirmed that DinoLand will become Pueblo Esperanza and will feature Encano and Indiana Jones! The new town Esperanza will be situated in Tropical Americas land coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The town features classic Spanish-style architecture in the heart of the rainforest. The new land will feature classic Spanish-style architecture with a large hacienda that will be one of the largest quick-service restaurants at Disney World. There will be the rich and lush color and biodiversity of the Tropical Rainforest and at the center will be a large fountain where stories will be told by gathering villagers. There will even be a new giant carousel sculpted by a local woodcarver. A carousel featuring the resident wood carver’s favorite animals. There will be two signature attractions — an Encanto boat ride through Casa Madrigal and a new Indiana Jones adventure ride! Construction on the new land will begin this fall and the land will open in 2027. Disney assures everyone that there will still be time to ride Dinosaur again and get that dino! The new Tropical Americas land coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom lets guests explore a preserved Maya temple – and the ensuing adventure – alongside Indiana Jones. As sad as it may be to be losing DinoLand, we can’t wait for the new Tropical Americas land to come to life! It will be an amazing display of the Rainforest, Encanto, Indiana Jones, and more. For nearly 40 years, The Walt Disney Company has honored artists, creative leaders, executives and visionaries who have made significant contributions to the Disney legacy with the Disney Legends Award. This year, 14 exemplary individuals have been selected from across the company’s history and among those, one cast member has made a lasting impact on Disneyland Resort for more than half a century: Martha Blanding. In many ways, Martha was and remains a staple of Disneyland Resort. From becoming the first full-time Black tour guide at Disneyland park in the early 1970s to most recently retiring as a senior manager of merchandise special events, her 50-year career has been one of dedication, poise and excellence. It’s no wonder she’s joining the elite Disney Legends Class of 2024. Read on to learn about Martha’s story and her work at Disneyland Resort as we look forward to honoring her at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event at the Disney Legends Award Ceremony on Aug. 11! Born in Los Angeles, California Martha grew up in the city of Watts, and attended Los Angeles City College before transferring to California State University, Fullerton. In May of 1971, while in her early 20s, she was recruited for a role at Disneyland and was eventually hired as a part-time tour guide. Within her first year, she was made a full-time cast member becoming the first ever Black tour guide at Disneyland with that status. As a tour guide and eventually a VIP hostess, Martha demonstrated the high level of hospitality and courtesy that Walt Disney envisioned for Disneyland cast members, and she went on to host a variety of prominent guests such as Diana Ross, Elton John and Cher. Martha said, “It was very important to me that every guest experience was special. As cast members, our job is to create happiness and that’s what I strove for every day.” Her welcoming personality was at the core of every tour she led, and she credited her upbringing for giving her the tools she needed to interact with people from all walks of life. As time went on, Martha was promoted to a position in merchandise management and became the first-ever Black woman in this role at Disneyland and one of the first Black cast members in management across the company as a whole. Here, she was able to secure high-quality merchandise to delight guests and continued paving the way for other Black cast members to aspire to management positions. Her hardworking spirit allowed her to move up and become a Senior Manager of Disneyland Resort merchandise special events. She had the opportunity to work with celebrities, world-renowned artisans and assorted Disney Legends. Carmen Smith, SVP Creative Development – Content and Inclusive Strategies for Disney Experiences, said, “It was a pleasure working with Martha for many years on a variety of projects. She is fantastic and has set a stellar example of collaboration and leadership. Her Disney Legends Award is so well-deserved.” Of Martha’s many achievements, she had the opportunity to be among the founding producers of the Official Disneyana Convention which featured sales of Disney memorabilia, convention logo merchandise and special limited-edition collectibles, along with speakers and gala entertainment events. This event served as a predecessor to what we now know as D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. She also cared deeply about her fellow cast members, leading her to co-found PULSE (which stands for “People United to Lead, Serve and Excel”), a business employee resource group for cast members of African and Caribbean descent and backgrounds, as well as allies, where she served as a mentor and resource to her colleagues. Despite her retirement in 2022, Martha continues to inspire. She is now the first Black Disney Parks employee to be honored as a Disney Legend, and on Oct. 1, her memoir, “Groundbreaking Magic: A Black Woman’s Journey Through The Happiest Place on Earth,” is set to release from Disney Editions, commemorating her incredible story. And to clarify, these are not the ships like the yet-to-be-launched ships like the Treasure and Destiny that we already knew about. As Disney explained on the Parks Blog, “Five ships are currently in the fleet, with four others already in the works.
