  1. One of Disney’s beloved holiday traditions is returning! Disneyland Candy Cane Over the nearly seven decades that Disneyland has been open, countless holiday traditions have become part of the fabric of the resort. From the Festival of the Holidays to the Candlelight Processional to iconic holiday decorations and attraction overlays, the “Happiest Place on Earth” defines Christmas for many. Now, we know exactly when one of Disneyland’s SWEETEST holiday offerings will be available in 2024. Handmade, hand-pulled candy canes have been a longtime favorite treat of Disneyland guests. In fact, they’ve become so popular that Disney has had to put a wristband system in place to handle demand. Disney also clarified that candy canes are not available through mobile order and will be available while supplies last. In-person purchases will be required, and there is a limit of 1 per guest per day. Candy cane Disneyland’s iconic hand-pulled candy canes will be available once again this year, though there are specific days and very specific ways to get your hands on one. 3. Magical, luxurious… creepy? Eek There are many words one can use to describe Disney World’s hotels. The near-30 resorts that dot the resort’s property have themes ranging from a Polynesian resort to bygone New Orleans to a turn-of-the-19th-century Florida beach resort. However, some of them have an… unintentional theme of being downright creepy thanks to some head-scratching additions. Jack-in-the-Box! Walt Disney World’s group of value resorts (All-Star Movies, All-Star-Music, All-Star Sports, Pop Century, and Art of Animation) are known for their massive, oversized depictions of on-theme colorful props and characters. While most of these run the gamut from adorable (massive Disney characters across several of them) to kitschy fun (see the majority of Pop Century) to so bizarre that we love them (see the building-sized 1990s laptop complete with “go.com ” homepage… also at Pop Century) there is one we would definitely call creepy. Pop Century This massive Jack-in-the-Box at All-Star Movies looks downright menacing, like a deathtrap the Joker would spring on Batman in a classic comic book. We’re not sure what Disney was thinking with this one, but we always avoid eye contact whenever we’re at the resort! SCREAMS!!!! Trader’s Sam’s Creepy Critters (and More) Trader Sam’s Grog Grotto at the Polynesian Village is one of our favorite spots at Disney World. However, that doesn’t mean there aren’t some elements of this bar that give us the heebie jeebies. There’s the dark, somewhat cramped atmosphere, the volcano out the faux window, the octopus tentacle, the enchanted barstools, and the zombie servers. It’s fun, but not for the faint of heart. Uh-Oa at Trader Sam’s Nanny Chairs Of course we couldn’t talk about creepy elements at Disney World hotels without bringing up the nanny chairs at the BoardWalk. These terrifying chairs are modeled after and cast from original 19th-century carousel chairs, which were originally intended to give nannies a much-needed rest while the children they watched rode a carousel, hence the name. Now why do they need to look like horrifying sleep-demons? That’s another question. Now THAT is a nightmare, or should we say “nightCHAIR” On top of that, the chairs – – nicknamed Todd, Paul, Alex, and Carrie after the names hand-painted on their backs (rumored to be those of the children of the imagineers who designed the chairs) – – have a tendency to move around the BoardWalk. Are they haunted or is it simply some Cast Members having some fun? Boardwalk Inn Nanny Chair Walt Disney World’s hotels are magical across the board. However, there are definitely some creepy additions if one knows where to look. Stay tuned to DFB for further secrets of the resort. Don’t Worry. 5. Let me tell you a little story about my last trip to Disney World. I landed at Orlando International Airport, and as soon as my feet hit that iconic green carpet, I knew what I had to do. I had to get myself to Disney World! Orlando International Airport Now, several years ago, I used to be able to stroll right down to the Disney Magical Express zone, hop on a bus, and go straight to my Disney resort…for FREE. Yeah, that’s not a thing anymore (shocker). Instead, you’re on your own, people. YOU decide how you’re getting from the Orlando Airport (or any airport in the area) to Disney World. I recently tested two of the most popular options, Mears Connect and Uber, and I’m here to give you my honest thoughts on both services. Uber Let’s start with my trip from the airport to my hotel, Disney’s Pop Century Resort. After my flight landed in Orlando and I got my bags, I was ready to call a ride. I strolled out the doors, pulled up my Uber app, and requested a ride. Within seconds, Uber found a driver! SCORE! I only waited about five minutes for my driver to circle the airport and pick me up. Orlando Airport The ride was seamless! I called the Uber at 5:22PM, my ride arrived at 5:27PM, and I was dropped off at 6:03PM. Once we got to the resort, I was taken right to the front of Pop Century. My driver helped unload my bag from the trunk, and I was on my way to my room in no time. Easy, eh? Well, here’s where I tell you how much I paid for my ride. For that roughly 30-minute ride, I paid $64.98 BEFORE a tip. ©Uber Keep in mind that rideshare services like Uber and Lyft use a system called surge pricing, so depending on the time (and location) of your ride, you may pay a little more for the same trip. Rideshare sign at EPCOT Mears Connect Fast-forward a few days, and it was time to go home. Boo! This time, I decided to use Mears Connect to go from my resort, Disney’s Pop Century Hotel, to the Orlando International Airport. This is the closest thing to the old (free) Disney’s Magical Express Service that currently exists. OK, now it’s time to compare it to my Uber ride. Same distance, same price? NOPE! Not even close. Mears Connect My ride to the airport with Mears was, drumroll, please…$16 (before tip)! Now, there are a few caveats since this isn’t a true apples-to-apples comparison. For one, my ride with Mears was NOT private; I shared the bus with about five other families. Inside a Mears Connect bus Additionally, it was not a direct ride to the airport. The bus stopped at Disney’s Caribbean Beach Resort before going to the Orlando Airport. Depending on where you’re staying, you may make multiple stops at other Disney hotels before leaving Disney World. Caribbean Beach At the airport, the bus also stopped at Terminal C before dropping me off at Terminal B. So, yes, you have to be a little more patient if you’re using something like Mears Connect. Still, I got to the airport at least two hours before my flight took off, so it’s not like I was on a time crunch. Terminal C The Verdict Let’s be honest. People don’t like sharing. People also don’t like waiting. So, you might think I am Team Uber over Team Mears, given all the extra stops you have to deal with on the bus. But, come on, it’s $16! For one person, the difference between a ride on Mears Connect is WAY cheaper than an Uber ride. It’s a no-brainer for me — I prefer Mears! Mears Connect bus Here’s where things may look different for you, though. Number one: you might have a family of four (or more). Suddenly, your cheap ride via Mears is not so cheap. In fact, as a family of 4+, you could end up paying about the same price as an Uber ride. In that case, it might make more sense to just call an Uber; it’s a direct, private ride to the airport, after all. Mears Connect at Orlando International Airport Really, if price is the biggest factor for you, the decision might come down to the number of people in your party. While services like Uber and Lyft use surge pricing, the price isn’t based on the number of people in the car. Mears, on the other hand, charges a per-person ticket price. Mears Connect is one of the airport shuttle services available. The good news is that Mears offers child rates for those ages 3–9, and children under three ride free. So, if you feel more comfortable riding on a bus than in an Uber, this might be the better choice! Ultimately, there are pros and cons to both services. Price it out before you leave and see what’s best for your family. Don’t want to go through all of the stress of booking your Disney World trip alone? 7. This Animal Kingdom eatery has had its hours slashed. Let’s go to Kusafiri! A somewhat out-of-the-way yet enjoyable lunch experience at Disney’s Animal Kingdom has seemingly shut down, at least for now. The Kusafiri Coffee Shop and Bakery, tucked into a higher corner of the park’s Africa section, previously offered several unique lunch dishes. However, that wasn’t the case during our last trip to the park. In early November 2024, we noticed that Kusafiri’s hours on the Walt Disney World app were only showing as 8:00AM to 11:00AM and that the cafe only had a breakfast menu listed. ©Disney On our most recent visit to Animal Kingdom, we sought out a cast member at the nearby Harambe Fruit market to get clarification on the outlet’s status, and we were told that Kusafiri has, in fact, stopped serving lunch. Shuttered during lunch The loss of Kusafiri’s lunch menu is a bit of a bummer. As we discussed earlier this year, when we reviewed the cafe’s lunch options, we found the cafe to be a “great place to stop if you’re looking for a quick pastry or snack, or you want an entree you can order and eat quickly.” At the time, we particularly enjoyed the Harissa Chicken Wrap, which provided a cool and refreshing quick lunch option Harissa Chicken Wrap The Kusafiri Coffee Shop and Bakery at Disney’s Animal Kingdom has dropped lunch from its present menu offers, seemingly for the foreseeable future. A potentially dangerous storm is brewing in the Atlantic. ©National Hurricane Center While the Atlantic Hurricane Season is technically almost over (technically ending November 30th), that doesn’t mean it’s too late for dangerous storms to develop in the region. The storm’s current projected path would see it move near Jamaica and the Cayman Islands on Tuesday night before passing near or over western Cuba on Wednesday. ©National Hurricane Center The NHC expects Rafael to reach hurricane-level strength sometime in the next day or so, likely before it makes landfall over Cuba. According to the organization, Rafael is currently “situated in an atmospheric and oceanic environment that is quite conducive for strengthening.” According to forecasters, Rafael could potentially bring rains of 3-10 inches to the areas that could be affected, including in Jamaica and Cuba, where it could lead to flooding and mudslides. ©National Hurricane Center This heavy rainfall is also expected to spread north into Florida and nearby areas of the southeast U.S. in the middle to late part of the week, with tornadoes predicted to arrive over the Keys and southwesternmost Florida mainland by Wednesday. Several warnings are currently in effect in the region, including hurricane warnings for the Cayman Islands and the Cuban provinces of Pinar del Rio, Artemisa, La Habana, Mayabeque, Matanzas, and the Isle of Youth. A tropical storm warning is in effect for Jamaica and the Cuban provinces of Villa Clara, Cienfuegos, Sancti Spiritus, and Ciego de Avila, and a tropical storm watch is in effect for the Cuban provinces of Camaguey and Las Tunas and the Lower and Middle Florida Keys from Key West to west of the Channel 5 Bridge, as well as Dry Tortugas. ©NHC Tropical Storm Rafael is the 17th named storm of the 2024 Hurricane Season, and it has the potential to develop into a devastating weather event. 12. When you visit Disney World, there are official rules that you have to follow. Disney’s Hollywood Studios For example, there are very specific rules about wearing costumes in the parks, particularly for adults. There are rules about what you can and can’t bring into the parks when you visit. There are also some unspoken rules that are, more or less, common sense. However, there is one rule, but it’s kind of weird — and well, this rule could be Disney just lying to you. So as you probably know, Disney World’s theme parks have very specific opening hours and closing hours. We’re going to talk about a park’s official closing time. You might think this is the time when you would absolutely 100% be kicked out of the park if you’re still hanging around, right? EPCOT at night But that’s just not the case. The closing hours are more of a guideline than an actual rule. We’ll give you an example: Disney’s Hollywood Studios might have a closing time of 9PM. However, the last showing of Fantasmic! may start AFTER that, at 9:30PM (yes, this is common). Fantasmic! So the park CAN’T actually close at 9PM because it has to wait until that last showing of Fantasmic! finishes — which is around 10PM. So, you’re actually going to get to stay in Hollywood Studios an hour AFTER the park officially closes. It will take some time to usher everyone OUT of the park, too, so the actual closing time might be even later than that. Hollywood Studios at night You’ll also notice that many restaurants in Disney World parks take reservations AFTER the park officially closes, meaning if you have a late reservation, you’re getting to stay in the parks later than that. We’ve seen this often at Oga’s Cantina, for example, and we also think this is the BEST time to get reservations because Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge hits a lot different when almost everyone else has left the park. Oga’s Cantina Another thing you might have noticed if you’re in a park late at night is that shops will generally stay open later than the official park closing time. This is most obvious in Magic Kingdom. We like to spend a little extra time in the shops after the park officially closes to avoid the crowds (and get in a little bit of final shopping, of course). Magic Kingdom at night Finally, did you know you can often get in line for a ride RIGHT at park closing time? Yep! It’s usually a great way to ride an attraction with a shorter wait time. So, of course, the park doesn’t actually close until everyone has had a chance to get that final ride in and make their way to the exit. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster So yes, all four of Disney World’s theme parks have official closing times. But those closing times aren’t EXACT and parks don’t actually close until everyone has actually LEFT the parks, which happens later. So no, you don’t have to make it for the exit right at closing time — you have plenty of wiggle room to get a last ride in, do some shopping, and even grab a bite to eat. With that being said, though: Don’t be deliberate in trying to always push the limit on park closing times. Cast Members have to wait until you’re out of the parks before they can help close up and go home. So be mindful of their time, too. This is just some extra information so you don’t have to worry if you’re standing in line, shopping, or can ONLY get a late dining reservation when a park closes. Stay tuned to DFB for more. 13. It’s a fairly common problem for rides and other attractions at Disney World to experience technical difficulties that temporarily shut them down. Spaceship Earth However, it’s pretty uncommon for an entire park to not open due to technical difficulties, but that appears to be happening today, November 5th, over at EPCOT. We were headed to EPCOT right away in the morning recently when we stumbled upon a VERY long line of people waiting to get into the park. Eventually, opening time came and went, and we were still waiting without moving forward. Entrance to EPCOT Eventually, Cast Members shared a message saying that they were experiencing a delay due to technical challenges, and they did not know why. They urged guests to be patient as they worked to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. Everyone waiting patiently to get in However, while standing in line waiting, we noticed that some rides on the Disney World app already showed wait times. Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure had a wait time of 65 minutes, which likely indicated that the entrance at the back of the park, at International Gateway, was working and letting people in. It is likely that the tap stalls at the front of the park were having technical issues. The park was not opened 10 minutes after the official opening time Around 9:20AM, it appeared that people were finally being let in very slowly. That was at least a 20-minute delay for the park to open. You never know what might happen when technology is involved, but staying patient and understanding as Cast Members work to solve the problem is the best thing to do at the moment. If you have dining reservations in a situation like this, generally, the Cast Members will be understanding and work with you. For more Disney news, keep following DFB! 15. BREAKING BREAKFAST NEWS! Satu’li Canteen One of our absolute favorite restaurants in all of Disney World just brought its breakfast menu back! Satu’li Canteen inside Pandora: World of Avatar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is a stellar quick-service spot that features build-your-own bowls and the iconic cheeseburger pods during lunch and dinner, but right now we’re taking you with us to check out the newly returned breakfast menu at Satu’li Canteen! Atmosphere Satu’li Canteen is a space that celebrates the culture and art of the Na’vi of Pandora. Fitting right in with the story of the land, the space was originally a mess hall for the RDA (Resource Development Administration). However, ACE (Alpha Centauri Expeditions) repurposed the hall into the peaceful dining spot that explorers can experience when visiting Pandora today. Satu’li Canteen You’ll find plenty of seating outside, under a covered awning — so even if it’s raining, you should be able to grab a seat here. But, if sitting outside doesn’t tickle your fancy, you’ll also find plenty of seating inside the restaurant as well. Inside seating Since this is a quick-service restaurant, you can order from a Cast Member at the counter… Counter …or Mobile Order, which is what we did. Menu The menu is “inspired by Pandora’s bounty,” with an international influence on the cuisine. Customizable bowls and Steamed Pods (twists on Bao Buns) along with unique drinks and desserts are available during lunch and dinner, but we’re here to try the newly returning breakfast menu! NEW breakfast menu items at Satu’li Canteen When Satu’li Canteen first opened in 2017, breakfast was served here (and we LOVED it!) — but it has been missing for years now. The current breakfast menu is made up of items we’ve tried before — so we’re excited to check them out this time around! Eats We’re starting off strong with the Slow Roasted Pork Shoulder Potato Hash with Chorizo Sausage and Charred Onion Sauce for $13.29. Back in the day, this was our FAVORITE of the breakfast items — but how do we feel this time around? Slow Roasted Pork Shoulder Hash The hash was a mixture of sweet potatoes and regular potatoes, but there were far more sweet potatoes which gave this dish an overall “fall” flavor profile, which we enjoyed. The charred onion sauce has a strong allium flavor, but there are plenty of herbs that make the sauce taste fresh and bright and it goes well with the sautéed peppers. The roasted pork shoulder is mixed into the hash, and it’s incredibly rich, tender, and pairs nicely with the potato hash. The piece of chorizo sausage you get is HUGE — you’ll definitely need a knife for this thing. It’s fairly spicy — a bit hotter than what we typically see with Disney’s spice level — so keep that in mind if you’re averse. Unfortunately, we found a piece of bone in our sausage, but overall we really enjoyed this dish. Slow Roasted Pork Shoulder Hash Next up, we tried Cinnamon French Toast for $12.99. This is served with Blueberry Cream Cheese, Passion Fruit Anglaise, and Sausage. We enjoyed this when we had it in the past, but we did find it a bit dry. Cinnamon French Toast This time around was much of the same. The French toast itself was dry and tough to cut through with just a fork — we ended up using a knife as well. We’re used to French toast being soft and decadent, and this was not that. However, the blueberry cream cheese and passionfruit glaze were SO good. The cream cheese is sweet and pairs well with what little cinnamon flavor we could taste, while the glaze added a tang and moistness that the dish was desperately in need of. The French toast was served with your basic breakfast sausage, which was fatty, salty and had a nice snap to it — but it wasn’t anything to write home about! Cinnamon French Toast We also grabbed the Frittata and Beef for $14.29. This is a Vegetable-Goat Cheese Frittata with Wood-fired Beef tossed in Chimichurri sauce. This was another hit for us back in the day — and this time around Frittata and Beef Starting with the frittata — which was loaded with peppers and onions that seemed to be concentrated at the top. The egg was light and fluffy, but it was pretty underseasoned and could have benefitted from some salt and pepper — but the bites that included the peppers and onions with goat cheese were really great! This dish is served with a side of shaved beef — the same kind you’d find in the build-your-own bowls at lunch and dinner. It’s served cold and is such a flavor bomb! There’s a rich, meaty flavor to it but it’s decently seasoned with salt and pepper. It’s tender and chewy without being overly so. The greens served on the side are tossed in what appeared to be oil and weren’t anything too special, but if you want to start your day with bitter greens — this is your chance. Frittata and Beef Finally, we tried the Tropical Pandoran Forest Fruits for $11.99, which is with Fresh Yogurt, Muesli, and Honey. If you’re looking for something on the lighter side, this fits that bill. Tropical Pandoran Forest Fruits This may have been our reporter’s favorite of the breakfast items this time around, which was surprising to her because it was SO simple. It’s flavorful and fresh, and a great, lighter breakfast option if you’ve got a day full of eating ahead of you — but one that will still keep you full. The muesli was perfectly crispy and had a cinnamony flavor, and the yogurt was mild — we’re pretty sure it was vanilla flavored. The dried mixed raisins added a nice texture, while the fresh kiwi, pineapple, and strawberries were a burst of flavor that really rounded the entire dish out. Tropical Pandoran Forest Fruits So, what’s our verdict on the return of breakfast at Satu’li Canteen?! Overall While not every aspect of each dish was a hit for us this time around, we did enjoy our breakfast at Satu’li Canteen. The Tropical Pandoran Forest Fruits were a surprise hit, and the Slow-Roasted Pork Shoulder Hash is a hearty option that we’ll definitely be getting again. Full spread Still, this newly returned breakfast is incredibly welcome as Animal Kingdom lacks many quick breakfast options other than a basic breakfast sandwich here and there. And, if you’re planning on rope-dropping either of the rides in Pandora, this is a new option that you won’t have to walk far to find! Nosh or Not Make a stop at Satu’li Canteen for breakfast if… You want a quick and hearty meal before starting your Animal Kingdom day. You’re looking for breakfast that’s a bit elevated from what you’d normally expect from a theme park. You worked up an appetite after rope-dropping Flight of Passage or Na’vi River Journey. Consider going elsewhere if… You’re looking for a large, sit-down meal with Disney characters. You want more traditional fare like Mickey waffles. 19. After months and months of waiting, a Disney World park finally reopened today! Summit Plummet at Blizzard Beach Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park has been closed since March while Typhoon Lagoon was operating for the summer instead. But, as of November 4th, Blizzard Beach has opened for the season and we’re bringing you with us to check it all out! It’s official — Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park is open for the season! We headed on over to the park to see if anything significant had changed while the park was closed for refurbishment. When we arrived, we noticed a decent crowd of folks waiting in line to head into the park, but nothing too wild just yet! Keep in mind that since Blizzard Beach is open, Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon Water Park is now closed indefinitely. Blizzard Beach is OPEN! Operating hours may vary — so make sure you double-check ahead of your visit — but on opening day the park was available from 10AM until 5PM. Don’t think you’ll be spending any late nights at Disney World’s water parks, as they typically close early save for special events. Park hours Around Melt-Away Bay, Blizzard Beach’s wave pool, we noticed that empty beach chairs were few and far between! It looks like quite a few folks wanted to enjoy the sun and heat while it’s still around — not that Florida gets too many cold days. It has been known to happen though, so make sure you pack accordingly if you’re visiting over the winter months! Crowds around the pool We stopped by the seating area over near Lottawatta Lodge, one of the Quick Service dining options here, and found plenty of seating — but it wasn’t quite lunchtime yet. You’ll find Quick Service restaurants and snack stands at Blizzard Beach — don’t expect to have any nice, sit-down meals here! Lunch crowds Speaking of lunchtime, you know we had to check out some of the new and returning eats now that Blizzard Beach has reopened! We grabbed the Winter Harvest Salad with Chicken from Warming Hut… Winter Harvest Salad …along with some Elote Nachos with Pork… Elote Nachos …and a DOLE Whip Orange Swirl Cone! Orange Swirl Dole Whip At I.C. Expeditions, we grabbed the Praline Churro Sundae… Churro Sundae …and the Apple Pie Churro. We’ll be bringing you our full review of these items soon, so keep checking back here for our complete thoughts! Apple Pie Churro And, if you’re considering visiting a Disney World water park on your next visit, don’t forget that Disney World has announced that in 2025, those staying at Disney Resorts (including DVC properties) will get a FREE park ticket to the water parks on their arrival day. You’ll be able to use this perk at either Blizzard Beach Water Park or Typhoon Lagoon Water Park and only on your check-in day. In the meantime, we’ll be bringing you the latest updates from Disney World — so make sure you stay tuned to the Disney Food Blog for more news!
