They are known for their intelligence, talent and beauty, but after spending a day at Magic Kingdom Park they may be better known for their Disney Side. Recently, all 53 of the 2015 Miss America contestants visited Walt Disney World Resort and celebrated their adventure side, their goofy side, their happily ever after side – their Disney Side. It was a chance to let their hair down (as much as a pageant contestant can), relax and spend time with fellow contestants. The day was capped off by a special walk down Main Street U.S.A., where they were greeted by thousands of park guests cheering for their home state. Whether it was adventurous twist and turns on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, pirates play with Goofy or a dance with Prince Charming in front of Cinderella Castle, these girls all had the chance to celebrate their Disney Side. This week, the girls got down to business in Atlantic City, NJ, where they are competing for the title of Miss America. You can watch the competition live on ABC, Sunday, September 14 (8:00 – 11:00 p.m., ET). The evening kicks off with The Countdown to the Crown, an unprecedented look behind the scenes of the Miss America Competition, followed by the 2015 Miss America Competition. Recently, I shared my Adventures by Disney Norway vacation. But it seems I wasn’t the only one enjoying a carefree trek around this beautiful Scandinavian country. Olaf, the loveable snowman from the hit Disney film “Frozen,†also traveled with Adventure Guide Kira through the land that inspired the animators who brought him to life. Kira photographed Olaf throughout his Adventures by Disney journey as he found out what snow does “in Summer.†All started well when he saw the snowcapped fjords of Norway. But things quickly went downhill for him at The Seven Sisters waterfall in Geirangerfjord where it dawned on him that all that liquid water just might be melted snow! It sure looked beautiful though. Next up on Olaf’s adventure was the Borgund Stave Church, built in 1250 A.D. This church provided architectural inspiration to the filmmakers of Disney’s “Frozenâ€. Olaf’s favorite part of the Adventures by Disney Norway itinerary was a fjord safari aboard a speedboat! Along the way he relaxed in the small village of Undredal, where he learned about the art of Norwegian cheese making, before he continued on through the UNESCO World Heritage site fjord called “Naeroyfjord.†At last, after a summer full of river rafting, trout fishing, glacier viewing, learning Norwegian folk dancing and more, Olaf’s vacation came to an end. But don’t worry, Olaf will be back next summer as Adventures by Disney offers another season of fun in Norway. Care to join him? It’s time for Disney Food Pics of the Week! We’re all trying to eat better for us these days, right? But still, every once in a while, it’s fun to indulge a little! Today, we’re taking a look at some of the great photos that you’ve shared with us on Disney Food Blog Photo Extravaganza, our Flickr page, as we highlight some of our Favorite Fried Appetizers! And when I’m there, I can’t resist having all of my favorites — their Monte Cristo Sandwich, Mickey-Shaped Beignets — and of course, Pommes Frites with Remoulade for dipping! They’re outta this world!! (Kudos to Daniel for getting two sauces; good choice!) I LOVE this platter. Wok-Fried Green Beans from Yak and Yeti Restaurant in Disney’s Animal Kingdom may fit the bill nicely for you. Served with a Thai Chili Dipping Sauce, they’re crunchy and delicious! (And they may be the only way to get your kids to eat veggies on your Disney vacation.) Wok Fried Green Beans Now I’m craving all three of these fantastic apps. The 2014 Epcot Food and Wine Festival is RIGHT around the corner! With the countdown at just about a week now, we know that you’re just as excited as we are. Today we wanted to spotlight the NEW items that are coming to the menus at the World Showcase Marketplace booths this year. And with more than 30 new dishes and sips to sample this year, there’s plenty to experience! We have a TON of stuff to cover, so to keep it all straight we’re gonna go alphabetically! Ready? The booth’s refocus gives the culinary team an opportunity to utilize fresh, local flavors from surrounding states, in addition to Florida. We’ve had a chance to try the Nueske’s® Pepper Bacon Hash with Sweet Corn, Potatoes, Hollandaise, and Pickled Jalapeños. It’s a great take on a much-loved breakfast dish. Pepper Bacon Hash with Sweet Corn, Potatoes, Hollandaise, and Pickled Jalapenos We’ve also had the pleasure of trying the Griddled “Yard Bird”. It’s incredible! Skin-on Chicken Thigh Meat is seasoned and then cooked on a griddle under a weight. The effect produces meat that is perfectly juicy with crisp skin. Simple and delicious! The sweet-spicy Habanero Sauce that tops the chicken complements the textures and seasoning beautifully. The dish is served with a hearty helping of another Southern favorite — Braised Greens. Collard Greens and Kale make up the dish for just the right mix of flavor and texture. The greens are seasoned with Onion and Bacon. I’m not even a big fan of greens — but these were pretty great. Griddled “Yard Bird†with Braised Greens and House-Made Habanero Sauce In keeping with the theme of local food and drink, the pairing with this dish is Duke’s Cold Nose Brown Ale — brewed and canned right in Jacksonville. France MarketplaceThe France Marketplace is always an exciting spot to check out while you Eat and Drink Your Way Around the World, and 2014 is no exception. The culinary team here has come up with some amazing new flavors. Tops on our list to try will be the Tartelette aux Escargots, a savory tart combining Escargot with Garlic, Spinach, Bacon, and Parmesan. The tart will replace a festival classic. Tartelette aux Escargots The Gratin de Crozet de Savoie, or Wheat Pasta Gratin with Mushrooms and Gruyere Cheese, is sure to be an instant hit. It sounds amazing, and we can’t wait to try it! Gratin de Crozet de Savoie Crème Brûlée has been a popular dessert here for a while now. Capitalizing on another hot food trend, this year’s version features the flavors of Caramel Fleur de Sel. We sampled it recently, and really enjoyed the deep caramel flavors. A thousand apologies that I didn’t actually get a snap of what’s underneath that beautiful sugar shell. The caramel flavor really comes through in the custard itself. I have a feeling this is another dish that will garner rave reviews! Creme Brulee Caramel Fleur de Sel Also new at the France Marketplace this year is the La Passion Martini Slush, replacing the Eiffel Sour Slush from the past two years. La Passion Martini Slush is NEW at the 2014 Epcot Food and Wine Festival Germany MarketplaceIs it possible that the Germany Marketplace won’t be our one stop shopping spot for Apple Strudel this year??? Well, thank goodness we have a recipe to make it at home! In the meantime, we are dying to try the Berliner, a Yeast Doughnut Filled with Apricot Jam! Jelly Doughnuts are ALWAYS a good option in my book. A new wine, Kallstadter Kobnert Spaetburgunder Spätlese Dry Barrique Style, also debuts. Greece MarketplaceThere are lots of returning favorites at the perennial favorite Greece Marketplace. But we really enjoyed the Vegetarian Moussaka at a recent preview event! The dish maintains all of the rich flavors of the original, but lightens up the protein component by using Soy Crumbles in place of meat. Vegetarian Moussaka Greece will also introduce an intriguing new cocktail with featuring savory flavors — the Tzatziki Martini featuring Crop Organic Cucumber Vodka and BOLS Natural Yoghurt Liqueur. Hmmm…this practically sounds like health food. Hawai’i MarketplaceWhat would we do without the Kalua Pork Slider at the Hawai’i Booth? Fortunately, we don’t have to figure that out this year! But there are a couple of new additions to the beverage lineup. Enjoy a new offering by Kona Brewing Company, Castaway IPA. Lovers of dessert wines may want to give Maui Splash Sweet Pineapple wine a try. And this year’s version of the Aulani Sunset features Sammy’s Beach Bar Rum. Hops & Barley KioskYou’ll find a celebration of American flavors at the Hops & Barley Marketplace. A hot spot of both food and drink, the offerings here make a complete meal! The Cheese Booth is taking a break in 2014, so we’re seeing the addition of an Artisan Cheese Plate at Hops & Barley. The plate will feature some artisan cheeses we’ve enjoyed at Disney restaurants, including Purple Haze Chevre and Caveman Blue. Purple Haze Caveman Blue Cheese The Florida Grass Fed Beef Slider returns to the festival at the Hops & Barley Booth this year — but it features a new topping. House-made Pimento Cheese is having a bit of a moment in culinary circles, and you’ll find it here topping this two-bite burger. It’s creamy with a bit of a kick. Florida Grass Fed Beef Slider with Pimento Cheese Lobster has been a mainstay in this corner of the festival for a few years, and this year, we’re seeing a new comfort food dish — Baked Lobster Alfredo. Under the Breadcrumb Crust, we found Pasta and chunks of Lobster Meat tossed in a rich Alfredo Sauce. With a consistency that’s a little drier than mac and cheese, fans of comfort food will still likely enjoy this upscale version of a kid’s classic. Baked Lobster Alfredo We’ve sampled the Carrot Cake with Craisins and Cream Cheese Icing from the Hops & Barley Marketplace as well. Carrot Cake fans will enjoy the moist cake and classic Cream Cheese Frosting. The addition of Craisins lends a seasonal flair and an additional pop of fruit flavor. Kerrygold Irish Cream Liqueur Debuts at the Ireland Marketplace in 2014 Italy MarketplaceWe look forward to trying a brand new dish at the Italy Marketplace this year — Filetto di Pollo, con Funghi al Marsala. The dish, which features Chicken Tenderloin and Cremini Mushrooms served on Ciabatta with a Marsala Sauce, sounds heavenly! Italy is also replacing the popular Italian Margarita with the Frozen Primavera. Featuring Limoncello and Tequila, this is similar to the cocktail we enjoyed at the 2014 Flower and Garden Festival. Primavera Fruit Smoothie Japan MarketplaceThere are lots of new flavors to check out at the Japan Marketplace this year! The Teriyaki Gyoza Bun stuffed with Chicken, Vegetables and Sweet Teriyaki Sauce sounds like a winner. The Chirashizushi promises to be a show stopper as well with its combo of Salmon, Shrimp, Crab, and Egg, all served on a bed of Seaweed Salad and Ginger Rice. Sake takes center stage in new drink options and a new dessert. Try Kikusui Ginjo alone, or sample the Sake Sunrise. Save room for something sweet with the Sparkling Peach Sake Gell. Ooooh — we’re intrigued! Japan Booth Mexico MarketplaceThere are lots of returning flavors at the Mexico Marketplace in 2014 as well, but they are changing up the dessert and beverage offerings just a bit. I’m not a fan of the Sweet Corn Ice Cream at La Hacienda de San Angel, but lots of people are! We’re anxious to see if the Sweet Corn Cheesecake here will bear any resemblance to it. Last year, festival guests enjoyed the sweet and spicy Mango Habanero Margarita at the Mexico Booth. This year’s menu will feature a Mango Strawberry version. Frozen or on the rocks? We look forward to finding out! Strawberry Margarita on the Rocks Morocco MarketplaceThis year, the Harissa Chicken Roll will make way for a new item on the Morocco Marketplace Menu — the Spicy Shrimp Roll with Cilantro and Mint Sauce. We hope the flavors are similar to one of our favorite Spice Road Table dishes, the Spicy Shrimp. We’re Hoping the Spicy Shrimp Roll is Similar to Spice Road Table’s Spicy Shrimp! Guerrouane White, a wine that’s new to the booth, but featured at Spice Road Table will also be featured. I expect the citrus notes of the wine to pair nicely with the savory, herbal flavors of the shrimp. Patagonia MarketplacePatagonia makes its debut this year, taking the place of the super popular Argentina Booth. Expanding the focus to this important South American region allowed chefs to bring in flavors of neighboring Chile as well. The Roasted Verlasso Salmon with Quinoa Salad and Arugula Chimichurri from the Patagonia Marketplace is an exciting dish, as it features Verlasso Salmon, a sustainably farm-raised fish with high marks from conservation watch groups. The Quinoa Salad is one of our favorite side dishes that we’ve tried so far. There’s so much flavor packed into it! Check out this recipe and try it at home — it’s a great way to utilize Quinoa, a protein-rich grain from South America that continues to grow in popularity. Roasted Verlasso Salmon with Quinoa Salad and Arugula Chimichurri The Salmon pairs wonderfully with the Cono Sur Bicicleta Viognier. Cono Sur Bicicleta Viognier and Salmon from the Patagonia Marketplace Prefer a Rose? Try Cono Sur Bicicleta Pinot Noir Rosé instead. Poland MarketplaceWe’ve grown accustomed to seeing Pierogis at the Poland Marketplace. But 2014 offers two versions of this favorite, and a different twist on the classic. This year, try a Pierogi filled with tangy Sauerkraut and served with a hearty Pork Goulash. Sauerkraut Pierogi with Pork Goulash The pairing here is something special as well. Donausonne Blaufrankisch is a Red Table Wine that’s actually Hungarian. While the flavor profile of the blend is definitely sweet, it plays off of the rich flavors in the dish very well. And how often can you say you’ve tried Hungarian wine? Donausonne Blaufrankisch Puerto Rico MarketplaceThe Puerto Rico Marketplace will be a festival centerpiece in 2014. Executive Chef Jens Dahlmann has spoken excitedly about the authentic flavors that will be offered here. He hinted that the Marketplace itself will be something pretty special as well. We can’t wait to see it! Recently, we had the chance to sample the Ensalada de Currucho, or Caribbean Conch Salad. The cold dish features cooked Conch Meat combined with Onion, Tomato, and Cilantro. Ensalada de Carrucho — Caribbean Conch Salad Try pairing Gasolina Sangriiia with the Conch Salad. Think of it as Fruit Punch for Grown Ups. Gasolina Sangriiia Guests can also enjoy a selection of Frituras, an assortment of deep fried snack food that’s popular in Puerto Rico. Selections will include Sorullitos (Sweet Polenta Fries) and Bolitas de Queso (Cheese Fritters with Mayo Ketchup). Sweet Corn Sorullitos with Mayo Ketchup Another traditional dish, Carne Guisada con Arroz Blanco, features Slow-Braised Beef on a bed of Puerto Rican-Grown Rice, is comforting and delicious. Carne Guisada con Arroz Blanco FlanCocho (Vanilla Caramel Custard with Chocolate Coffee Cake) will round out the food offerings at Puerto Rico. There will also be several other beverage options in addition to the Gasolina Sangriiia. Disney World continually seeks ways to help guests with food allergies feel more at ease during their travels. If you or any member of your traveling group has a food allergy, you may be interested to hear about a current test underway at a few dining locations in Disney World. For a limited time, select Disney World restaurants are offering menus specifically geared towards those with food allergies to allow ease of ordering directly from the menus. Test locations at the resorts include World Premiere Food Court at All Star Movies Resort, Flying Fish Café at Disney’s BoardWalk, and Kona Café and Captain Cook’s at the Polynesian Village Resort. At Disney’s Hollywood Studios, The Hollywood Brown Derby, Sci-Fi Dine-in Restaurant, and ABC Commissary are taking part in the test. ABC Commissary In these beginning phases, ABC Commissary’s menu focuses solely on Gluten-Free items. With the exception of the Chicken Tenders, the items are gluten-free versions of choices available on the regular menu. Gluten Free Menu currently at ABC Commissary Gluten Free Kids’ Menu and Desserts Menu (By the way, please forgive the light reflection on the Kids’ Menu portion, which effectively removed the word “Gluten” from view. They aren’t “Free Kids’ Meals” . ) These menus are in testing for a limited time, so availability may vary during your travel dates. And, as always, guests will still have the opportunity to speak to Disney chefs regarding questions or concerns. But it will be interesting to learn if this test expands in any way, and we’ll look forward to sharing more about the ways Disney continues to make travel and dining for those with allergies more comfortable. If you’ve recently enjoyed a Disney visit, you probably had the opportunity to support the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund (DWCF). There are plenty of ways you may have contributed – adding a dollar to your purchase, picking up a sponsored pin or plush item, enjoying the Wild Africa Trek excursion at Disney’s Animal Kingdom or snorkeling at The Seas with Nemo & Friends. Every donation, big or small, adds up and is combined with support from Disney, which in turn has given all of us something amazing to celebrate. Including the 141 grants being awarded this week, we have contributed more than $25 million dollars to study wildlife, protect habitats and develop community conservation and education programs across the globe and here in Florida. Doing your Christmas dreaming a little early this year? Then check out the exciting holiday entertainment that Tokyo Disney Resort has in the works. Tokyo Disney Resort will begin their annual holiday celebration on November 7, with special events, entertainment and more taking place at both Tokyo Disneyland Park and Tokyo DisneySea. At Tokyo Disneyland Park, guests will be able to enjoy Disney’s Santa Village Parade, in which Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters help Santa Claus prepare for the holiday. The park will also feature special seasonal photo locations, holiday decor and more. At Tokyo DisneySea, guests will be able to enjoy a Colors of Christmas holiday tree display and lights around Mediterranean Harbor. Guests visiting the Lost River Delta can enjoy Fiesta de la Luz (“Festival of Lightsâ€) – a holiday lantern display. Over at the American Waterfront, Snow Chrystal Illumination will light up the area with white lights. Today, we’re pulling another great question out the Disney Food Blog mailbag. You guys ask some great ones, and lots of times, we’ll get several emails and inquiries about the same subject. Spontaneous Birthday Treat at Citricos Today, we’re going to delve into the wonderful world of birthday celebrations for grown-ups! Celebrating Grown Up Birthdays in Walt Disney WorldOur DFB reader asks: We will be vacationing at WDW in May. My 25-year old son will have a birthday while we are there. We would like to have a special meal to celebrate, something fun but also really good! I love this question! Disney brands itself a great place for all kinds of celebrations. And when it comes to birthdays, why should kiddos have all the fun? When planning a special meal to celebrate a birthday at Walt Disney World, the most basic advice is probably a great starting point: what does the birthday boy or girl enjoy? Birthday Dessert Does he like fine dining, or would he prefer a great night out at a sports bar? Does she like a quiet, elegant setting, or a spot with intricate themeing? Or are they a kid at heart who can Celebrate Mickey with the best of them? Fantastic ideas abound for fun birthday celebrations at Disney World, but let’s go with my three favorite ideas. At the very least, it might lead to some good brainstorming when it comes time to plan your own special dinner party! Signature DiningFor the Disney fan who enjoys a fine dining experience, there would be no other place to celebrate a birthday than where these two things meet — Disney’s signature dining restaurants. If you’re looking for the pinnacle of fine dining, consider booking a table at Victoria and Albert’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and Spa. Victoria and Albert’s Main Dining Room The ultimate in Disney fine dining, this relaxed, refined restaurant has won countless awards for its upscale take on modern American fare and its stellar wine menu. To make it an even more special experience, book the Chef’s Table! Another great option is California Grill at Disney’s Contemporary Resort. The restaurant sits atop the hotel, and boasts panoramic views. It’s a great spot for viewing Wishes, Magic Kingdom’s fireworks spectacular! Sonoma Goat Cheese Ravioli at California Grill Food here is always fresh and inventive, celebrating the farm to table movement and the Asian fusion style that placed California on the culinary map. For something a little off the beaten path but no less delicious, check out Jiko at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge. In a relaxing atmosphere that mimics the African savanna at sunset, you’ll enjoy dishes that incorporate the rich flavors of Africa. And oenophiles love Jiko’s wine list, which boasts the largest collection of African wines outside of that continent. And whether you’re a seafood fan or a land-lubber, my current favorite Disney restaurant — Flying Fish Cafe — has something for everyone. Char Crusted Black Angus New York Strip at Flying Fish Celebrate with knowledgable servers, a great menu, and a fun atmosphere. Super-Themed and CasualIf fun-filled, themed dining is more your speed, why not check out one of Disney’s super-themed restaurants for your special occasion? 50s Prime Time Cafe in Disney’s Hollywood Studios is, hands down, one of my favorites. With its retro decor and kitschy knickknacks, you’ll swear that you’ve wandered back in time to your Aunt Gladys’s formica-clad kitchen. The 50s Called. They Want Their Kitchen Back. And the fun doesn’t end there. Your server (who will also be your cousin or some other relation) will spend the entire meal making sure that you mind your Ps and Qs, and that you eat every last vegetable. (No lying. If you don’t, they’ll feed them to you.) Comfort food is the name of the game here, and I can’t get enough of their Fried Herb and Garlic Cheese! Fried Herb Cheese — Sooooo Good! Take an equally fun trip back in time at Sci-Fi Dine-In, also in Hollywood Studios. Enjoy dinner in your very own convertible as you view awesome B movies from the 50s! The Picnic Burger is daunting — but hey, if you don’t splurge on your birthday, when will you? Dine in a Convertible at Sci-Fi If you have a super sports fan in your midst and fine dining isn’t really your thing, then ESPN Club may be just the right fit. You’ll never miss a moment of the big game. No, really. There are even TVs in the bathrooms! How’s This For the Sports Lover in Your Life? Dining is hearty and…well, everything that you could dream that the ultimate sports bar could be. And more. Character Dining: It’s Not Just For Kids!But what about character dining? Because if you think it’s just for kids, well, think again. Maybe you don’t want to twirl a napkin with the best of them at Chef Mickey’s (although that really does have its charms), but if you’d still like to rub shoulders with some of the Fab Five, check out breakfast or lunch at Tusker House in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Safari Mickey! A cast of characters dressed in fun safari gear will stop by your table while you dine on food inspired by African dishes. If you’re looking for a princess encounter, then you’ll want to book your advance dining reservation for Cinderella’s Royal Table within Cinderella Castle at Magic Kingdom. Cinderella greets guests in her castle The menu is prix fixe and reviews of the food tend to be mixed…but who are we kidding? I’m totally going here to say I’ve been in the castle! An alternative for guests seeking dinner with the princess set is Akershus Royal Banquet Hall in Epcot’s Norway Pavilion. In addition to the beautiful setting, you’ll be greeted by princesses and will feast on dishes inspired by the cuisine of Norway. Swedish meatballs are a specialty at Akershus Guests especially love their Koldtbord, the Norwegian-inspired cold buffet. And be sure to try the Traditional Kjøttkake — Norwegian Meatballs served with a delicious Lingonberry Sauce. Of course, no matter where you end up celebrating, don’t forget the cake! Chip ‘n Dale Cake at California Grill And remember that you’ll want to make an advance dining reservation for sure. September is an exciting month for new merchandise at Disney Parks. In particular, our Disney Parks online store will be offering a few unique T-shirts throughout the coming weeks. Here is a breakdown of what you can expect to find online. Last September, you may recall seeing artwork shared by my fellow author Jennifer Fickley-Baker on the Disney Parks Blog. The artwork was created by our Yellow Shoes Creative Group and featured Disney villains playing famous roles from the Haunted Mansion attraction. From September 8-14, we will be releasing Hanes Beefy-T shirts for both men and women with this artwork. We will also have an option for posters or canvas prints of these villainous images (they will measure 50-inches by 19-inches). Apparel items will ship in 4-6 weeks, while the poster and canvas prints will ship in 12-14 days. Express shipping is not available. Ahoy! Thar be a new pirate shirt me hearties coming to the online store to celebrate Talk Like a Pirate Day on September 19. Time flies when you’re at the top of your game, and a year after re-opening with a classy new interior and new seasonal menu, California Grill Chef Brian Piasecki and his talented team are busy keeping guests happy seven nights a week. “California Grill is a total experience – great food, interesting wines, craft cocktails, and an incomparable view,†says Chef Brian. He and general manager Michael Scheifler conduct a beautifully orchestrated evening with efficient, knowledgeable staff. Any misses on the new menu, we asked Chef Brian? “We change the menu so fast with what’s fresh and available, so far it’s been a success,†he answers with a smile. The most-ordered dish is the Pork Two Ways with grilled pork tenderloin and lacquered pork belly served with warm goat cheese polenta, mushrooms and a touch of sweetness with house-made applesauce. For starters, the house-made charcuterie is another hit. And, of course, the buttery filet mignon with heirloom tomato risotto, baby vine tomatoes, basil and tomato butter is a top pick, too. Chef Brian loves his new kitchen, with gadgets like a sous vide machine that seals ingredients in plastic for slowly cooking in a water bath for super tender, perfectly cooked dishes. “Most guests don’t want to know about the cooking techniques, they just love the results,†says Chef Brian. The kitchen team reaches out to local farms, and with Florida crops just coming into high season, look for lots of local fruits and produce on the fall menu – as well as Florida seafood. A simple salad has never tasted better than the one made with local greens and topped with a poached Lake Meadow Naturals egg and Palmetto Honey vinaigrette. The list of favorites must include the Cucumber Fizz cocktail, flatbreads (try the heirloom tomato BLT flatbread with lemon mayo) and the sushi (we’re fans of the yuzu-marinate sashimi). “And desserts are flying out of here,†says Chef Brian, thanks to the creativity of Pasty Chef Jeff Barnes – his hot banana fritters are the biggest hit. As for that stellar view, the new fireworks deck has given more guests a front-row spot for the nightly Magic Kingdom Park fireworks. While you can sit at your table with the fireworks sound track piped in, most guests love to walk out on the two decks for a bird’s-eye view of the Magic Kingdom Park from the 15th floor. AtmosphereSitting right on the promenade of World Showcase Lagoon, Chefs de France is a prominent restaurant. Built to replicate a French bistro, the large open interior is fronted by a long, glass sunroom. Those walking along the World Showcase Lagoon can see the diners all the way in the back, and those in the back can see all of those walking by. Les Chefs de France Window Tables Our reservation was at 8:50PM and a positively bubbly maître d’ seated us right in the middle of the sunroom window. Seats against the glass were for two, we were one row away from the window. Because the whole restaurant is an open room, you can see all the waiters, everyone getting up and down, and all the people walking outside. Les Chefs de France Back Sunroom at Night A large floodlight outside provided an amber warmth that calmed all the hustle and bustle. Front of Les Chefs de France at Night We ate as the restaurant closed and slowly cleared until it was just our table and about 5 others when we were finished at 9:45PM. EatsSince we were at a French restaurant I decided to start with the French onion soup. The cheese was a little sharper than I thought it would be, which caught me off guard. Although unexpected it added a welcome bite to the flavor. The onion and beef flavors were much more subtle, but the cheese didn’t overpower them. French Onion Soup Another unusual touch was that I got the heel of the bread, which made it a little difficult to cut out a good hunk of bread with my spoon. Overall good, but not enough to stop me from sampling another appetizer next time I eat here. The next dish was the ungainly titled “Filet de Saumon, pommes de terre ecrasess, au buerre et chboulette, sur coulis de tomate et poivron rouge.†That was the bold faced name of the dish, but instead of saying it while ordering or the direct English translation of “broiled salmon, smashed potatoes with butter and chives, served on a tomato and red pepper sauce†I was able to get away with just asking for the salmon filet. I appreciated that the sauce was not served on the salmon, but placed on the plate before the potatoes and salmon. It let me dip the salmon in the slightly spicy sauce and get just the right amount on the fish for my taste. Salmon The salmon itself was perfectly cooked and seasoned with a little black pepper and just enough other spices to bring out the flavor of the fish. The potatoes were simple and added nothing of note to the dish other than a starch. It was a good, straightforward main course. (Note; the accompaniments on this dish have changed on the menu since the review was written.) My friend, who despite not being a foodie is my BDFF (best Disney friend forever), had the baked macaroni with cream and gruyere cheese. She enjoyed it but I absolutely loved it. Flavorful, simple, and among the best mac and cheese you’ll find at Walt Disney world. Baked Macaroni She saved about half of it for the next day and reheated it in the microwave in Café Rix at Coronado Springs. Mac and cheese is sometimes best experienced the next day, right? This held its flavor well and didn’t turn greasy. Unfortunately the cheese didn’t remelt. It wasn’t quite as good as at the previous day but made for a fine lunch. Her husband had the beef tenderloin. I didn’t sample it but he cleaned his plate. A man of few words, he declared it “good.†Beef Tenderloin We finished by splitting an absolutely decadent strawberry cream cake. The strawberries were crisp. The filling creamy and not overly sweet, and the cake was light and perfect. I’d go as far as to say this is now among my favorite desserts at Disney World. Strawberry Shortcake OverallIt shouldn’t be surprising by now that Les Chefs de France is a fine restaurant with solid food and a great view of the World Showcase promenade. It’s one of the few places that, since it opened back in 1982, hasn’t changed that much. It’s understandable because, as they say, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. A final note: even though our reservation was around the time of IlumiNations and the entire front of the restaurant was a window, Chefs de France does not provide a great view. There are trees and small stands in the way, and people lining the railing around the lagoon. Go for the food, not the IllumiNations view. Have you dined at Les Chefs de France recently? Any Disney cruiser will tell you all about the magical memories they are making on their voyage, complete with fun family activities, delicious dining and awesome entertainment. Beginning September 12, Halloween Time “spooks†into high gear at the Disneyland Resort. What does that mean exactly? Well, a few things that I look forward each year are the fall decor along Main Street, U.S.A., the pumpkins that have been carefully tucked away, anxiously waiting to be spotted, Halloween Carnival at Big Thunder Ranch Jamboree and of course, Mickey’s Halloween Party. I know some of the more popular dates are selling quickly so be sure to check Disneyland.com for updates, in case you are planning to ‘treat’ yourself this year! You may have noticed that the art for this year’s Mickey’s Halloween Party merchandise looks vaguely familiar. A similar logo can be found on some of the Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party merchandise that will be available at Walt Disney World Resort, as fellow Disney Parks Blog author Steven Miller recently shared. If you are still unsure of what to wear, here are a few things to keep an eye out for at this year’s party, that might help. Mickey’s Halloween Party T-shirts will be available in youth, ladies and adult sizes. For those chilly nights, I suggest the zip fleece. A few other treats to add to your stash include our open and limited edition pins. The Halloween Time 2014 pin will release on September 12, while the Mickey’s Halloween Party pins, the Halloween Screams pin and our Annual Passholder pin featuring the Hitchhiking Ghosts will release on September 26. It’ll be tough to top the great time we had during last year’s Halloween event hosted by the Disney Parks Blog but we think that’ll happen at this year’s Disney Side “Not-So-Scary†Soiree at Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort. On Sunday, September 14, we’re hosting another costumed event during one of the first nights of Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party for 91 winners of the Disney Side “Not-So-Scary†Soiree at Magic Kingdom Park Sweepstakes. The Disney Side “Not-So-Scary†Soiree at Magic Kingdom Park begins at 7 p.m. EDT on Sunday, September 14 but we’re asking attendees to begin arriving at 4:00 p.m EDT. As the new Trattoria al Forno at Disney’s BoardWalk gets ready for a December opening, here’s a look at the classic server attire, designed by Walt Disney Imagineer Celina Lung, who’s been a Disney costume designer for nearly 20 years. “My inspiration comes from the trattoria’s interior and lakeside setting,†says Celina. “Like the restaurant, the server attire is charming, casual, a little upscale.†The warm décor matches the restaurant color palette, she explains. Celina’s research also took her to a seaside bistro in Southern California to come up with a look that’s “not overdesigned, but simple and elegant.†The burgundy shirts and blouses with gold contrast echo the décor, with khaki-colored pants for a more casual look. “We’re in America, not Italy, and I wanted the servers to look casual but polished,†says Celina. One detail, for instance, is the bladed leather belt with an antique brass buckle to lend a more refined finish. For colder months, she designed a jacket with a relaxed fit in classic tweed. Servers will also wear long bistro aprons, weaving the elegance of traditional European restaurant with the experience of a neighborhood restaurant. Her expertise is in many costumes throughout Disney Parks, from the server attire at Coral Reef Restaurant at Epcot to various lands and restaurants at Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, Tokyo Disney Resort, Shanghai Disney Resort (her current project) and Disneyland park. And she’s always got something in the works. Landscape of Flavors — the food court at Disney’s Art of Animation Resort – developed a reputation early on for being a step above your average food court. Learn About: Landscape of FlavorsDisney World RestaurantsWith options such as the Surf and Surf Burger, the World of Flavors Tandoori Station, and a Create-Your-Own Pasta bar, it’s been one to watch from the beginning for some fun and appetizing entrees. It also introduced something unexpected to the realm of food court desserts: Landscape of Flavors has its own Gelato Bar — a feature that has since been added to the recently refurbished End Zone Food Court at All Star Sports Resort. Today, though, our search for sweets is focused on a different area… Who’s up for raiding Landscape’s pastry case?! Pastries and Desserts Case Two recent additions here caught our attention: the Toffee Shortbread Bar and the Seven Layer Bar. Toffee Shortbread Bar and Seven Layer Bar So, let’s grab a carton of Mickey Milk… Mickey Milk with the bars Mickey Milk! …and start with the latter. You’ve likely had a Seven Layer Bar or maybe even have your own family recipe for this treat (though you may call them by a different name, like Magic Bars, or Magic Cookie Bars). Landscape’s take on this generous bundle of candy on top of a soft graham crust includes coconut, chocolate chips, and nuts. Seven Layer Bar I was also expecting butterscotch chips. Probably because I’m more accustomed to the Magic Cookie Bar — the version of this treat found at Roaring Fork and Riverside Mill Food Court. And while there was a hint, this version didn’t have the strong emphasis on butterscotch like its counterparts… all part of the “anything goes” aspect that comes along with Seven Layer Bars ! Seven Layer Bar cross-section Basically, it was what you would expect: a rich, chewy blend of pantry baking staples. And it was good (I mean, you can’t really argue with those ingredients) ;). But for me it paled a bit in comparison to what’s next… the Toffee Shortbread Bar. Toppings here include coconut (again – hooray!) and slivered almonds. You’ll find a bit of the coconut and almonds again in the chewy, toffee center, all sitting on a shortbread cookie crust. Toffee Shortbread Bar Of the two, it might visually be the least intriguing, but the flavor is where this one really got my attention. The great thing that toffee and shortbread share is that awesome, buttery burst, and I loved the more subtle sweetness of the shortbread coupled with the sweeter toffee. The coconut was also a great compliment here. Toffee Shortbread Bar cross-section And the texture was a nice surprise, since for some reason I was expecting it to be crumbly. But nope – everything stayed together really well, and hopefully you can gather a bit of the chewy, dense texture from this picture. Toffee Shortbread Bar If you adore toffee like I do, you may already be familiar with the English Toffee Bar found at sweet spots all over Disney World like Seashore Sweets and Main Street Confectionery, which has a hard toffee center covered in chocolate and nuts. And shortbread lovers have likely tuned into the Chewy Caramel Shortbread Bar found at Karamell-Küche. But I can’t think of anywhere else on property you would find this precise combo of soft toffee and shortbread, and I sure hope Landscape of Flavors deems it a “keeper!” The Seven Layer Bar is $2.59, and the Toffee Shortbread Bar is $3.69. Each counts as a snack credit on the Disney Dining Plan. No matter which you choose, it’s worth checking out the bakery case — as well as just about everything else — at Landscape of Flavors! Allllll-righty, friends, we’re back at it on another trip to Chester and Hester’s Dino-Rama to visit Dino Diner! Learn About: Dino DinerAnimal Kingdom Disney World RestaurantsOur most recent stop at this wacky and colorful carnival in Animal Kingdom’s Dinoland, U.S.A. was to sip a new drink: the Carnival Cocktail at Corn-Ivores Popcorn Cart, which features Cotton Candy among its ingredients (along with a nice kick of rum). But if you prefer your carnival treats served up in a more traditional fashion, then it’s Dino Diner all the way! Offering cinnamon-glazed almonds and pecans, cotton candy (naturally!) and frozen beverages (lemonade or Coke), our visit today is focused on an old-fashioned county carnival staple: the Snow Cone! AtmosphereDino Diner is tucked into the very back corner of Chester and Hester’s Dino-Rama, and this teardrop trailer would be easy to miss if not for the enormous dinosaur head sticking out of the right side. Dino Diner Dino Head! I took these photos after Dino Diner was closed (Dino Diner typically closes about one hour before the park closes, though it can vary). During operating hours, if you’re among the lucky few who can snag one of the umbrella-topped tables, then you’ve definitely scored. Umbrella-topped table There aren’t too many of them, and since Dino Diner is the only spot serving up icy treats in the immediate vicinity (the nearest cold-snack stop is Dino-Bites Snacks, featuring ice cream), these seats fill up fast with folks trying to escape the sun and heat with a cold snack. Typical scene at Dino Diner Beyond that, the atmosphere just consists of your primo view of Dino-Rama! Chester & Hester’s Dino-Rama Chester & Hester’s Dino-Rama Love it or hate it (it took a while to grow on me), you gotta admit, it certainly is eye-catching… EatsDino Diner’s menu is actually a decent size for being such a small place. Dino Diner Menu Since we’ve already sampled the Cinnamon-glazed Pecans (similar to those you’ll find in each Disney World park) and refreshing Frozen Bacardi Raspberry Rum Lemonade (who says Dinoland is just for kids? ), it’s high time that we go in for that old classic, the Snow Cone. Flavor choices are Blue Raspberry, Grape, or Cherry. And for this classic snack, I went with the most classic flavor: Cherry. Cherry Snow Cone Cherry Snow Cone The cherry syrup (poured directly over the shaved ice), immediately seeps through the whole cup, so when you start to dig in, every bite is full of the sweet, bright flavor. Settling in… Inevitably, I ran into a solid chunk of ice. This might bother some, but I liked how I still had an icy cold treat that stayed icy even as I walked through other sections of the park. Ice chunk In 95 degrees, most cold treats keep their form for about a minute ;), so I didn’t mind having a big ol’ ice chunk to work through. Plus, I grew up in a southern state, and we do like our ice! It completely befuddled me when I moved to the midwest, and no one seemed to share my same enthusiasm for it… Anyway, yeah, it’s your basic snow cone. And when’s the last time you saw anyone in a bad mood chomping on a snow cone? OverallDino Diner is a simple stop for a couple of kid-friendly favorites… and, hey, it might be just the stop for the kid in you ! Have you tried a Dino Diner Snow Cone? This summer, I’ve been highlighting some of the 250 new pins and accessories created especially for Disney Parks. To conclude my three-part story, I’m again turning the spotlight on new items arriving in August and September at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. One of the easiest (and most portable) ways to display Disney pins is by using a neck lanyard. We also offer a variety of trading bags including one of my new favorites pictured above. I love the colorful patchwork of logos that represent various icons and attractions from Disney Parks. I’m also in love with the new four-pin set, featuring Carl and Elli from Disney•Pixar’s “Up.†The photograph-like pins are so adorable (I need to watch that film again!). Fans of Disney’s “Tangled†will be delighted to see several new pins, featuring Rapunzel, Flynn Rider and other favorite characters from the animated feature. Look for both individual open-edition pins and some two-pin sets. Finally, there are numerous places to find pins at Disney Parks. One of the newest locations can be found in The Chapeau hat shop on Main Street, U.S.A., in Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort. I stopped by the location the other day to take some photographs. This new location is a great addition to the well-established main pin location in Magic Kingdom Park – Frontier Trading Post in Frontierland. Happy Trading!
