  1. Well, when we visited the newly refurbished Captain Cook’s at the Polynesian Village Resort, we said we’d be back soon… and here we are, because the brand new Pineapple Lanai is now open! Pineapple Lanai sign So, why is Pineapple Lanai so important? It’s the new home to Dole Whip at the Polynesian! (For anyone unfamiliar with this beloved treat, check out a little Dole Whip info here. Then be sure to schedule some of your own personal snacking research on this pineapple soft serve — you’ll be glad you did!) Pineapple and Vanilla Swirl Dole Whip in Tiki Bowl We’d love to take you on a quick tour of this new space. AtmosphereYou’ll find Pineapple Lanai on the ground level upon exiting the Great Ceremonial House from the sliding glass doors in the back. If you’re exiting either outside door of Captain Cook’s, just take a turn to the left (or two, depending on which door you exit ;-D). Coming from Captain Cook’s The area is relaxed and casual. Basically just the ordering window where you can spy the menu on top, the fun Pineapple Lanai sign, and outdoor seating. (I took a few of these photos before the Lanai opened, so the window is shuttered in some of the shots.) Pineapple Lanai Pineapple Lanai Pineapple Lanai Pineapple Lanai The dark wood accents in the direct area and palm trees just across the way spread the tropical vibe. View from Pineapple Lanai But it’s nice to know there is protection from the elements, which was needed several times the day the Lanai opened! Rainy Day at the Polynesian It’s just the spot to enjoy your tropical treat… because Dole Whip is what you’re here for, and Dole Whip you shall receive! EatsThe menu features the flavors previously available when the Dole Whip machine could be found in Captain Cook’s: Pineapple and Vanilla. You can have them served individually or swirled together, and you also have the option of your choice of Dole Whip in a Pineapple Float, a la Magic Kingdom’s Aloha Isle. Pineapple Lanai Menu As designated on the menu, each treat is available for a snack credit on the Disney Dining Plan (sans souvenir items). Something unexpected is the addition of a souvenir Tiki Bowl (for the soft serve alone) or Tiki Sipper (for a Float). Tiki Bowl menu picture As you can see, this location now greatly resembles the menu found at Disneyland’s Tiki Juice Bar. (Yet we’re still not going to get cherries and umbrellas in our Florida drinks, but I can always hold out hope!) Tiki Sipper menu picture The Tiki Sipper for the Floats bears an uncanny resemblance to the Tiki Tankard found at Sunshine Tree Terrace in Adventureland . For those who mastered the art of creating your own self-serve Dole Whip towers at Captain Cook’s, you should know that the self-serve machines — as anticipated — are a thing of yesteryear. Now you’ll place your order at the window. Pineapple Lanai is open! And the Cast Member will prepare your order with the machines inside the building. Dole Whip machines My go-to Dole Whip is available at Aloha Isle (a Pineapple-Orange Swirl Float), so I had to change things up a bit here, and opted for the Pineapple and Vanilla Swirl in a Souvenir Tiki Bowl. Pineapple and Vanilla Swirl Dole Whip in Tiki Bowl In order to keep my Tiki Bowl clean, the Cast Member served the Dole Whip itself in a paper cup and placed it in the bowl (not per request – it just came that way). At certain angles it looks like the three little Tikis circling the bowl are hard at work holding up the Dole Whip . Tiki Bowl I still prefer my pineapple Dole Whip swirled with orange, but I definitely get the appeal of the creamy, sweet vanilla alongside the tart pineapple. The whole thing was refreshing, just like always. Pineapple and Vanilla Swirl Dole Whip I was able to snag a picture of a Float while I was at it. Nope; no cherries. No umbrellas. Sigh. Pineapple and Vanilla Swirl Dole Whip Float Aaah, Dole Whip… I’ve had worse dinners ;). No Dole Whips for breakfast, though… The Pineapple Lanai opens at noon, and stays open until one hour after “Wishes,” Magic Kingdom’s nighttime fireworks spectacular. So, for me, the biggest loss here is that I can no longer get Dole Whip at 4AM (Captain Cook’s is open 24 hours and the self-serve Dole Whip machine was available for 23 of them each day). OverallIt’s good to have Dole Whip back at the Polynesian, even with the loss of the self-serve machines (though that one will sting a bit – especially for those who perfected their Dole Whip Tower over many years) and all-nighter Dole Whip parties. But we welcome Pineapple Floats and a dedicated space to enjoy one of the most iconic Disney treats there is. Here’s to many more Dole Whips at the Polynesian Village Resort! 3. As an alumna of Clark Atlanta University, one of our nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), I was proud to take part in a unique college fair today at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort. The HBCU College Information Fair brought together 100 students from Orlando’s Edgewater High School, HBCU advocates and Disney cast members who attended HBCUs. The event – which is part of the 10th annual MEAC/SWAC Challenge Presented by Disney – began with a presentation by United Negro College Fund Development Director Sherry Paramore, who outlined the value of an HBCU education, as well as how to prepare for college and secure scholarships. And though they’ll be rivals at Sunday’s MEAC/SWAC football game, representatives of North Carolina A&T State and Alabama A&M shared the stage amicably as they provided tips on making your college application stronger and applying for financial aid. After the presentations, I joined fellow cast members who attended HBCUs in sharing my college experiences with students browsing the fair. As I explained how my academic experiences prepared me for a career at Walt Disney World Resort, I told them that enrolling at an HBCU is more than just being a student at a university. It’s becoming part of a network of future business and community leaders who share in the legacy of achievement. As we talked, I was inspired by their hopes, dreams and vision for the future. I hope they were inspired, too … and that I see some of them again one day as fellow Disney cast members! 7. Today marks the third anniversary of Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa! Let’s celebrate with a look back at three major milestones this beautiful resort has seen through the past three years. Tradition and Magic at the Grand Opening of Aulani, a Disney Resort and Spa With the help of Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, Hawaiian performers and Aulani cast members, Walt Disney Parks & Resorts Chairman Tom Staggs and President and Chief Executive Officer of the Walt Disney Company, Bob Iger, led the Grand Opening Ceremony. One of our favorite moments during the ceremony was the joining of Hawaiian culture and the magic of Disney – symbolized by the mixing of sand from the beach with pixie dust in an ‘umeke, a ceremonial wooden bowl. New Ka Maka Landing Officially Opens Tomorrow at Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa Ka Maka Landing opened in October 2013, completing the Waikolohe Valley expansion. Your ‘ohana can now spend the day in the spectacular infinity-edge pool overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and children can splash and play in the new Keiki Cove. Be sure to take a break and enjoy a poolside meal at Ulu Cafe before diving back for more Hawaiian fun. Travel + Leisure Readers Recognize Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa and Disney Cruise Line for Excellence Last month, Travel + Leisure announced its World’s Best Awards 2014, and Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, was named the Top Hotel for Families in the United States. Cast members were positively thrilled to receive this honor on behalf of our Hawaiian resort, and look forward to continuing the tradition of providing extraordinary guest service. Please join me in wishing Aulani a hau`oli la ho’omana’o, or happy anniversary! If you’d like to visit and celebrate the anniversary too, take advantage of a special travel package this fall: book a consecutive four-night or more stay, now through October 30, 2014, for travel between August 15 and December 22 (excluding November 26-29), and receive the fourth night free! 8. Okay, coffee lovers… what we’ve suspected for a while now has officially been confirmed by Disney: Starbucks is coming to Hollywood Studios in February 2015! Starbucks logo But there are a few additional details along with the announcement: we’ve also got a name! The Trolley Car Café will have a “classic trolley car station” theme. While Disney has only officially confirmed the location as being “along Hollywood Boulevard,” all signs point to the L.A. Prop Cinema Storage merchandise location, which closed for refurbishment a few months ago, and remains surrounded by refurbishment walls. L.A. Cinema Prop Storage under refurbishment The location will carry food items found at Starbucks locations across the country (known as the Starbucks La Boulange line) as well as Disney-specific goodies. “Pardon Our Dust” So, there you have it… Hollywood Studios officially joins the ranks as the third of four Disney World parks to have its own Starbucks, along with Magic Kingdom’s Main Street Bakery and Epcot’s Fountain View. Starbucks certainly isn’t a stranger to Disneyland, either, where the very first in-park Starbucks location debuted at the Fiddler, Fifer and Practical Café in California Adventure. Fiddler Fifer and Practical Cafe With Labor Day weekend upon us, it’s already hard to figure out where the majority of 2014 went . If this year is any indication, February 2015 will be here before we know it. As always, we’ll keep you posted on more information as the date nears. 10. Gourmet apple fans take note, September is right around the corner and next month you will find the Disneyland Resort gourmet caramel apple enrobed in sweet milk chocolate and covered in a mixture of crunchy, buttery, toffee pieces and roasted almonds. How do you top that? How about adorning it with milk chocolate drizzle? Mouthwatering and delicious, this apple will not disappoint. I was able to “scare” up a few other details on our Halloween Time treats this year, so mark your calendars for September 12. Returning favorites include the Minnie Witch Apple, Pumpkin Seed Brittle, Pumpkin Fudge, and festive cake pops themed to creepy crawlers (spiders) and Mummy Mickey. If you’re wondering if there’s anything new, the answer is yes. Other delightfully ghoulish and tantalizing treats will make their debut during Halloween Time, so be sure to keep an eye out. Remember they are available for a limited time only, so don’t miss out! Look for these items and more at Candy Palace on Main Street, U.S.A. at Disneyland park; Trolley Treats in Disney California Adventure park; and Marceline’s Confectionery in the Downtown Disney District. 11. Next up in my series about Port Adventures on our Southern Caribbean cruises is what to do from the port of St. George’s, Grenada. Known as the “Spice Isle,” Grenada is filled with spice estates, tropical gardens, beautiful beaches, thrilling diving, snorkeling, fishing and exploration through mountain landscapes and waterfalls. There’s an adventure to be had by everyone, with more options than I can possibly tell you about today! Tropical Beach Tour – Grenada is known for some of the best beaches in the Caribbean, so many of our excursions bring you to a stunning stretch of sand to relax and swim. If you want to take a step back in time on your way to the beach, this tour gives you the chance to explore the historic Fort George overlooking the capital city. Your stop here also provides a fantastic panoramic photo opportunity above the island and Caribbean Sea! Some of our other beach trips to consider are the Rum And Beach Tour, Aquarium Beach Day With Lunch and Beach House With Lunch. Around The Isle Of Spice – This Port Adventure provides a great taste of Grenada with an inside look at the spice and rum industry, along with fantastic views of nature and wildlife. First, discover the reason for Grenada’s nickname with a visit to a garden of spices at a historic estate and to a spice factory to see the seasoning, processing and sorting of nutmegs and mace. Then, after a tour of a famous rum distillery, you’ll visit Grand Etang to see the crater of an extinct volcano and possibly wild monkeys. Your last stop is to Annandale Falls, a 30-foot waterfall surrounded by lush vegetation. Amazing Sculpture Park Snorkel By Powerboat – Molinere Point, a protected marine park, is a volcanic reef home to the world’s first underwater sculpture park. After a thrilling ride in a powerboat, you’ll have the chance to snorkel here and see an abundance of tropical fish and other marine life. Before heading back to port, you’ll cruise through Dragon Bay and along the island’s beautiful coast for some great photo opportunities. Up next, I’ll give you my recommendation for Port Adventures in Barbados. When the ship’s in port, venture ashore! 12. When one of my Downtown Disney partners told me about Brent Dodge, an Annual Passholder who visited the four Walt Disney World Resort Theme Parks every day for 365 consecutive days, I couldn’t believe it. While I love the parks, just the idea of visiting every day while working full time has me exhausted! I wanted to find out more, so I spoke with Brent myself to find out why he did it. First things first, he confessed that he hadn’t really passed through the turnstiles (or, in our new era of MyMagic+, ventured through the main entrance touch points) for a full year, “there were actually three days that I didn’t visit a park. I was on a Disney Cruise” he shared. Well, 365 days of Disney attractions, then. Consider me impressed. Brent has been a Passholder since 2009, and currently carries the “Premier” pass, which also grants him access to Disneyland park. (I’d say he’s getting his money’s worth!) This Peter Pan’s Flight lover has visited the place where dreams come true since he was an infant, and when pressed for the “why” behind his latest all-year-long endeavor, he simply states, “Cause I’m a Disney nerd! If I live this close to Walt Disney World Resort, why wouldn’t I go every day? Especially when others are saving up thousands of dollars to go once in a lifetime.” Okay, he had me there. The “official” milestone was reached on August 13; of the estimated 2,200 days Brent has spent at the parks over his lifetime, that day ranks among his all-time-top Disney memories. “A friend surprised me with a custom t-shirt from Disney Design-a-Tee at Downtown Disney; it features my favorite character, Scrooge McDuck. A few other friends met me at Magic Kingdom Park with signs to celebrate, and we had a great view of the parade. We got to ride Peter Pan’s Flight, followed by another beloved attraction, Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover – three times!” I’ll admit, it does sound pretty magical. While most of my days are spent at the Downtown Disney area, now that fall is fast-approaching, I plan to spend more time following in Brent’s footsteps and enjoying all that Walt Disney World Resort has to offer. How about you … can you imagine a daily visit to the parks? 365 (Consecutive) Days of Walt Disney World Resort Magic by Darcy Clark: Originally posted on the Disney Parks Blog View the full article
  13. Dogs have been on my mind lately. I recently met my daughter’s new dog, Gracie, whom she found at a local shelter upon returning to college. I also read Tom Smith’s story about the Disney Side Dog’s Day at Magic Kingdom Park on August 30. Both things sparked a flood of memories about the two dogs I had growing up. I know pets are important members of many families, so I’m delighted to announce the return of pet products to Disney Parks. Coming in spring 2015, guests will find a small assortment of dog items as part of a new program called “Disney Tails.” I spoke with Nicole Brann, merchandiser for souvenirs, about this new line. “We know our guests love their pets,” said Nicole. “Guests may remember the pet products that we carried at Disney Parks in the mid-2000s. I’m excited to reintroduce some of those popular items under this new product line called ‘Disney Tails.’ For the initial small assortment, we will only focus on dog products, including bowls, squeak toys and apparel. I hope these new items will be another fun way that guests and their pets can show their Disney Side at home.” Nicole shared with me concept artwork for some new items. I, of course, love the Haunted Mansion- themed bow tie for dogs. All of the products in this line will feature packaging with the Disney Tails logo. Look for these items in select merchandise locations at Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts next year. I’ll share additional updates as final samples arrive at our Disney Theme Park Merchandise headquarters. While my traveling lifestyle makes me more of a cat person today, I miss my first dog Charlie, as seen here in 1978. I’d love to hear a “tail” about your favorite pet, so please share in the comments below. 14. Today, we’ve got an update to share about a new Starbucks location coming to Walt Disney World Resort. Guests visiting Disney’s Hollywood Studios will be able to enjoy a new Starbucks location inside the park beginning in February of 2015. The new store, The Trolley Car Café, will be themed to a classic trolley car station along Hollywood Boulevard and offer a unique experience for coffee lovers visiting the park. There will also be Disney baked goods and Starbucks La Boulangeâ„¢ pastry items at the store. The store will be the third in-park location serving Starbucks products at Walt Disney World Resort. You’ll recall last year we opened locations at Magic Kingdom Park and Epcot, as well as at Downtown Disney. Be sure to check the Disney Parks Blog for updates on this new location as well as a look inside the store when construction finishes in February. 15. One of the quintessential Disneyland must-eats are the beignets! You can find ‘em at a couple of locations around the Happiest Place on Earth, and there is definitely a difference of opinion on which version is best. We’re going to take a look at the options, and we want YOU to tell us your favorite! Mickey Beignets + Dipping Sauces at Cafe OrleansCafe Orleans in Disneyland Park is probably my all-time favorite spot to enjoy Beignets. And there are lots of reasons for that. Inside, you’re surrounded by rich colors, beautiful stained glass, and Disney history — the spot houses an espresso machine that was a favorite of Walt Disney himself! And the outside patio offers great people watching and a good vantage point to enjoy beautiful New Orleans Square. Outdoor Patio at Cafe Orleans But great location is just the tip of the iceberg. Because the real reason that these are some of the best Beignets ever? They’re Mickey-shaped! Mickey Beignets with a View! And, luckily, they come with Dipping Sauces! Because just about every food should be dipped, I think. Here there’s not one, but two — Vanilla Creme Anglaise and Raspberry Coulis. My favorite is the raspberry — combined with the beignets, it’s like eating a jelly donut! Mickey Beignets with Sauces A look at the inside shows you just how remarkably light and airy the Beignets are. Cafe Orleans Mickey Beignets — Cross Section If you happen to visit Disneyland during the Fall or Winter holidays, you just might stumble upon some seasonal Beignet flavors as well. The Gingerbread Beignets with Vanilla Sauce sound like a pretty great way to usher in the Yule Tide Spirit! Gingerbread Mickey Beignets are Served Seasonally Mickey Beignets to Go and More Seasonal Flavors at Mint Julep BarIf you’re looking for just a snack, or you’re in the mood for a stroll and nosh experience, you can also find Mickey-Shaped Beignets at the Mint Julep Bar in New Orleans Square. Here, the treats are served in a paper bag, tossed with a ton of Powdered Sugar. Mickey Beignets — a Peek Inside the Bag You won’t get any dipping sauces here (Why, Disney? Why??), but you can decide whether you’d like a single order or enough to share. Choose from a three-count or six-count. Here’s an interesting point to ponder, though. The Beignets that I’ve had here aren’t quite as light or airy as the ones I’ve gotten over at Cafe Orleans. Fluke or actual difference? Hmmm. Mint Julep Mickey Beignets — Inside And what is a sure-fire way that we know Fall has arrived in Disneyland? Pumpkin Beignets arrive once more at the Mint Julep Bar! While the orange-hued dough doesn’t taste night-and-day different from the regular beignets, pumpkin fans may taste a slight spice. Pumpkin Beignet at Mint Julep Bar And we hear that a Bananas Foster version makes an appearance, too. Yum! Traditional Beignets at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen ExpressBut we’ve also heard some really strong support for the more traditional version of Beignets that you can find at Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen Express in Disneyland’s Downtown Disney. If you’ve ever had the pleasure of enjoying Beignets in New Orleans, then the rectangularly-shaped pillows of fried dough here will seem more familiar to you. And you have the added bonus of watching the staff make them fresh right before your eyes! Cut Squares of Beignet Dough Ready to Fry at Ralph Brennan’s Looks good, right? Fresh from the fryer. Frying the Beignets And at Ralph Brennan’s you can choose from a small order containing 4, a large order with 6, or family-sized order with 10! Fresh Beignets Smothered in Powdered Sugar Hot, fresh, and delicious, these are the perfect breakfast food to start your day — just add coffee. Or they make a great afternoon snack as well. (I can even vouch for them the next day.) Beignets — Up Close You can also pick up a box of Cafe du Monde Beignet Mix to whip up a batch at home! Make Your Own Beignets at Home! Now It’s Your Turn!We want to hear from you! Which Disneyland Beignet is your favorite? When it comes to hankering after this Big Easy treat, are you headed into Disneyland to Cafe Orleans for its Tower o’ Mickey Beignets with dipping sauces, or to the Mint Julep Bar for a snack and stroll? Do you prefer the fun seasonal flavors like Pumpkin and Gingerbread — or do you take the purist’s approach and head for Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen Express? 20. Fabulous flavors and the vibrant music of Puerto Rico, Patagonia and Mexico brighten up World Showcase for an extended celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month September 19 – November 10, during the 2014 Epcot International Food & Wine Festival presented by Chase. How about Puerto Rico’s Ensalada de Carrucho (Caribbean conch salad with onion, tomato and cilantro with Medella Light Beer; or Carne Guisada con Arroz Blanco (slow-braised beef with Puerto Rican-grown rice) with a frozen San Juan Breeze? Patagonia marketplace will showcase the tastes of Argentina and Chile with dishes such as sustainable Roasted Verlasso Salmon with Quinoa Salad and Arugula Chimichurri; Grilled Beef Skewer with Cimichurri Sauce and Boniato Purée, paired with Chilean Cono Sur Bicicleta Viognier and Argentinean Terrazas Reserva Malbec. The Mexico marketplace features three popular dishes: Shrimp Taco with Fried Shrimp, Pickled Habanero Pepper and Onions on Flour Tortilla; Rib Eye Taco with Marinated Ribeye, Roasted Chipotle Salsa and Grilled Scallions on a Corn Tortilla, and Sweet Corn Cheese Cake. Sip a Dos Equis Beer, Sangria or a Mango-Strawberry Margarita – or get a lesson in tequila with a flight of diverse vintages. National Hispanic Heritage Month is officially September 15 – October 15, but the celebration will continue throughout the Epcot festival. Celebrating Hispanic and Latino Americans’ contributions to the United States since 1968, Hispanic Heritage Month is steeped in the centuries-old traditions that reflect the ethnic and cultural customs of their communities. The festival also will present Hispanic and Latin culinary stars hosting dining events and demonstrations. At the festival’s Puerto Rico experience and marketplace, guests will be transported against a colorful backdrop of Old San Juan created by Walt Disney Imagineering as the festival’s first two-story marketplace. There, guests can explore the history and culture of Puerto Rico. More tastes will include Frituras Sorullitos (sweet polenta fries), Bolitas de Queso (cheese fritters with mayo ketchup) and FlanCocho (vanilla caramel custard with chocolate coffee cake). Puerto Rico also will host “Experience Puerto Rico – The All Star Island” gala, a premium event in the park’s World ShowPlace pavilion at 7:30 p.m. on September 20. Guests can enjoy the foods, beverages and entertainment of Puerto Rico during the island’s premier dining celebration. More than 25 festival marketplaces in the park’s World Showcase will feature flavors of six continents. Culinary demonstrations and beverage seminars at the Festival Center in Future World will present recipes and beverages from many cultures, including Puerto Rico, Argentina and Chile. The lineup of notable chefs includes Puerto Rico’s Maira Isabel, who will create a variety of recipes with Puerto Rican ingredients at scheduled culinary demonstrations and during the September 20 gala. Some Festival Center activities and all Eat to the Beat concerts and park attractions are included with Epcot admission. Premium wine and culinary programs require reservations and separate event admission. Guests can call 407/WDW-FEST (939-3378) to make reservations. 21. In my many years with Disney Parks, I’ve been fortunate to work on many amazing projects. One project near and dear to my heart will always be the creation and launch of the Walt Disney World Moms Panel in 2008. The panel, made up of everyday moms and dads from around the globe, have answered hundreds of thousands of questions over the years – covering just about every Disney vacation topic imaginable. Their knowledge of Disney Parks and their passion to help our guests shines in their answers. In fact, you’ve met quite a few of them here on the Disney Parks Blog. The panel became so popular that several years ago it was expanded to include other Disney Parks vacation experiences. The name was officially changed to the Disney Parks Moms Panel. September has traditionally been a special month for the Disney Parks Moms Panel. It’s when we search for new panelists to join the team for the next calendar year. It’s a rigorous and thorough process, consisting of multiple rounds, that determines who will be selected to represent the panel and answer vacation questions from guests around the globe. Thousands will apply for a small number of spots on the panel. But please, don’t let that be a deterrent. The most recent panelists to join the team include several who have applied every year, a few who applied for the very first time, and those in between. Dreams really can come true. This year, applications will open at 10 a.m. ET on Tuesday, September 2, 2014, and will remain open until noon ET on Friday, September 5, 2014. If you know a mom, dad or grandparent who is your “go-to” person for advice about a Disney Parks vacation and loves to help others plan their trips, encourage them to apply for the Disney Parks Moms Panel. (Be sure to check the rules and regulations on the application to insure eligibility.) More information about becoming a panelist can be found here.
