  4. Elephant care at Disney’s Animal Kingdom is a big job! Elephants are intelligent, social, and complex animals so meeting all their care requirements means lots of work and dedication, especially when the herd consists of eight unique individuals to look after. Our Animal Care Team provides daily baths, facility cleaning, foot care, feeding, record keeping, advanced training and enrichment programs all completed in an environment that is safe for both elephants and people. Our Veterinarians are able to perform many medical procedures without tranquilization as a result of effective training, so the elephants actually assist in their own health care. And of course there is plenty of time for elephant social interactions in not one, but three large habitats spanning about seven acres. As you can imagine, elephants are big… really big! In fact, they are the largest land animal on our planet. But it’s hard to imagine just how big they are until you stand next to an African bull [male] elephant. Since this is an opportunity very few people have the chance to experience, the Elephant Care Team at Disney’s Animal Kingdom worked with Disney Imagineering to simulate the experience by adding three life-sized silhouettes of elephants on the elephant house: 1. An adult bull at 11 feet tall 2. An adult cow at 8 feet tall 3. A newborn calf at 3 feet tall Guests participating in the Backstage Safari program now have the chance to safely measure themselves next to an elephant –an elephant silhouette that is – for a real height and size comparison. Day guests onboard the Wildlife Express Train at Disney’s Animal Kingdom can also view the elephant silhouettes as the train passes the backstage elephant house. To further enhance the area and share our commitment to elephants, both at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and in the wild, the team also added an inscription to the elephant house that proudly declares: “Dedicated to Elephant Care and Conservation.” Conserving elephants in the wild is also a big job! It is currently estimated that each day, 96 African elephants are killed for various reasons including their ivory tusks. Only by working together can we help protect elephants from illegal poaching. Walt Disney said it best, “Conservation isn’t just the business of a few people, it’s a matter that concerns all of us … If we will use our riches wisely, if we will protect our wildlife, and preserve our lakes and streams these things will last us for generations to come.” To learn more about how you can get involved in elephant conservation, visit: www.elephantconservation.org, www.Savetheelephants.com or the Wildlife Conservation Society’s 96 Elephants campaign, at www.96elephants.org. 8. What is it with all the seriously cool kitchen stuff arriving on shelves at Disney World lately? We were thrilled to see the new line of Princess and Villains mugs; and we were so excited for the opening of the Marketplace Co-op, which offers some awesome kitchenware paying homage to some of our favorite attractions and lands. And then recently I happened across these Alice in Wonderland Dish Towels! Alice in Wonderland Character towel set Each set features a pair of towels – the pictures I took show off both of the towels available in each set. The Alice in Wonderland and Queen of Hearts Set is similar the other sets in that they each have one thicker terry cloth-type towel and a lighter one that is more of a quilted style. And just look at the details on the Alice towel. Alice in Wonderland Towel The Belle Dish Towel Set features a Belle towel, and also a tribute to the “Be Our Guest” number in the film – perfect for the kitchen! Beauty and the Beast Towel Set With the new Maleficent movie (as well as the dragon’s showstopping, fire-breathing turn in the new Festival of Fantasy parade), we’re sure to be seeing a lot of this most notorious of Disney Villains. So it’s no surprise that there’s a Maleficent Dish Towel Set as well. Maleficent towel set If you look closely at the damask-pattern towel, you’ll see the face of Maleficent appear. Maleficent closeup Does your kitchen tend to produce more “Sweet” (Minnie) dishes… Minnie towel set … or “Spicy” (Mickey) ones? Mickey towel set Perhaps your favorite ingredient is a little bit of Pixie Dust! Tinkerbell towel set Each set goes for $18.95. No matter which you enjoy the most, these towels are sure to bring a little character to your kitchen! Which towel set would you add to your kitchen? Please let us know with a comment! 9. School is out, and that means it’s the best time of year to spend the day at the pool – especially at the Disneyland Resort! We have amazing pools available for Disneyland Resort hotel guests, where your family can soak up some fun in the sun. Today, I wanted to pass along some tips to help you plan your time relaxing poolside, taking a break from the fun at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks. Splash-tacular Pool Parties – Every day this summer at the hotels of the Disneyland Resort, a DJ spins music and cast members lead games like Hula-Hoop Toss and “Sand”-castle building (with cups)! Hotel guests can join the daily pool parties at these times:Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa: 2 p.m. near the Fountain PoolDisneyland Hotel: 3:30 p.m. near the Monorail PoolDisney’s Paradise Pier Hotel: 5 p.m. near the Californian Streamin’ SlidePoolside Cabanas - If you’re looking for a luxurious way to spend the day by the pool, then look no further than a Poolside Cabana! Available at both Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa and Disneyland Hotel, reserve your own oasis for up to six people. Inside your cabana, you’ll find a 32-inch LCD television with cable access, mini refrigerator with six complimentary water bottles and more! You can book a cabana up to 60 days in advance (just a friendly reminder – they fill up quickly). For booking and more information, click here.Services near the pool – Trust me, I know it can be difficult to move from your lounge chair, even when you’re ready for a meal. Well, all of the Disneyland Resort hotel pools have nearby restaurants where you can quickly grab a bite to eat. So fortunately, your break from lounging will be minimal. At the Disneyland Hotel, head to Tangaroa Terrace, which features a newly re-imagined menu. White Water Snacks is a fantastic place at Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa (I personally prefer the Char-Broiled Chicken Sandwich) and don’t miss Slurpin’ USA at Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel. If you need sunblock and other sundries, stop by Acorns Gifts and Goods (Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel & Spa), Small World Gifts and Sundries (Disneyland Hotel) and Mickey in Paradise (Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel). Pool & Slide Hours – The last and probably most important tip … the pool hours! Now through the end of summer, all pools will be open from 8 a.m. – 10 p.m., with the featured slides operating from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.Stay safe and cool this summer! Have any tips to share? 11. In the film “Frozen,” Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post is where Anna meets a snow-covered Kristoff, and they set off on an adventure together to find Elsa and stop the eternal winter. Here, you’ll be able to purchase “Frozen” wares, special snacks, take photos and enjoy wintertime fun – including ice skating! 12. Retro is in! Literally! Here are a few fun finds inspired by our Disney Parks attraction posters that you might want to consider picking up on your next trip. Spark conversation with your friends, family and guests while entertaining when you let them pick their favorite attraction as their plate. Here are a couple my top picks, Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room, Pirates of the Caribbean and The Haunted Mansion. Do you want another reason to love this collection? I have two! The smaller glassware actually features a different attraction poster on each side. Find the one that speaks to you and pair it with a coaster from another land. Before I go, let’s talk ‘trash’ for just a minute. Trash can salt or pepper shakers, that is. What did you think I was going to say? I am partial to the Fantasyland version. Which land inspired trash have you added to your home décor collection? Some of you might recognize some of these items, including my personal favorite the Mad Tea Party teacup salt and pepper shakers, from a post fellow Disney Parks Blog author Steven Miller did a few months ago when he gave you your first look at Disney Centerpiece at the Marketplace Co-Op in Downtown Disney Marketplace at the Walt Disney World Resort. Have you had a chance to visit the newly opened location yet? If you are visiting the Disneyland Resort, find them at China Closet in Disneyland park and Trolley Treats in Disney California Adventure park, among other select locations. 15. I don’t know about you, but whenever I think about summer desserts, fresh berries and cream always come to mind. If you’re searching for that perfect treat to bring to your July 4th celebration, I have the perfect one for you. Our summer pudding with berry compote is light and refreshing and has just enough sweetness to be the talk of the party! Download our keepsake recipe card here, and be sure to multiply the ingredient amounts if you’re serving several people. Enjoy! Summer Pudding with Berry Compote Serves: 4 Skill Level: Moderate Time: 5 hours Ingredients 8 white bread slices (crust off, cut into triangles lengthwise—2 slices per soufflé)11⁄4 cups fresh strawberries (cut into quarters)11⁄4 cups fresh black berries1⁄2 cup fresh blueberries
2 cups fresh raspberries11⁄2 cups granulated sugar4 oz. clotted creamFor the Summer Pudding Place 3⁄4 cup sugar and 5 tbsp. of water into a large pan. Gently heat until sugar dissolves. Stir a few times. Bring to a boil for 1 minute and then place in the fresh berries. Cook for 5 minutes over a low heat, stirring 2–3 times. The fruit will be softened, mostly intact and surrounded by dark red juice. Set aside.Line a soufflé dish with plastic wrap. Place 4 triangle-shaped bread pieces around the inside of the soufflé dish with the pointed side facing the bottom of the dish. This creates a bread bowl. Allow the top edge of the bread pieces to extrude above the top of the dish, which will form the bottom of the pudding.Scoop the berry mixture with juice into the bread bowl, allowing the juice to soak the bread.
Fill and then bend over the top ends of the bread triangles. Pull the plastic wrap together over the top, forming a seal. Repeat for the other 3 soufflé dishes. Place a tray over the top of the souffle dishes for weight and chill in fridge for 3–4 hours.Place the rest of the berry mixture back on the stove with 3⁄4 cup sugar in a large pan. Heat the mixture until it starts to boil. Simmer for two minutes, let cool and then refrigerate.Assembly Release the plastic wrap, flip the soufflé dish upside down and place the pudding in the middle of a plate. Spoon the berry compote over the top of the pudding, letting the berries run down onto the plate. Then decorate with fresh berries around the pudding, some micro-mint to give contrast and a quenelle of clotted cream onto the top.Disney Cruise Line Summer Recipe: Summer Pudding by Stephen Walker: Originally posted on the Disney Parks Blog View the full article
  16. July 4 is all about celebrating the red, white and blue. If you’re spending July 4 at Walt Disney World Resort, here are our Top 10 All-American eats: We’re starting with a cocktail, as it’s only available on July 4 – “red, white and blue” mojitos (red berry, classic and blueberry-lemon). You’ll find them at bars throughout Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Also at Disney’s Hollywood Studios, you can order the Famous All-American Picnic Burger at Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater. It’s an Angus burger topped with a grilled hotdog, sautéed onions, sauerkraut and a pickle. Yum!Head to Casey’s Corner in Magic Kingdom Park for a hit list of American baseball favorites: hot dogs, nachos, corn dog nuggets, French fries, cotton candy and Cracker Jacks. Grab a seat outside and listen to the all-American ragtime piano player.Step back to the days of Colonial Williamsburg at Liberty Tree Tavern in Magic Kingdom Park. For lunch, try the Liberty Boys BLT with slow-roasted pork, fresh greens and tomatoes on house-made bread with caramelized shallots and a mushroom-mayo spread.Sip a Liberty Swirl Slush (Fanta Strawberry and Blue Raspberry) at Sleepy Hollow in Liberty Square, or maybe an All-American Sundae at Plaza Ice Cream Parlor – vanilla and chocolate ice cream with hot fudge, peanut butter drizzle, whipped cream and a cherry on top. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park, what’s more all-American than a half slab of St. Louis ribs from Flame Tree Barbecue, served with baked beans and cole slaw – picnic tables and lots of napkins make it easy to be messy. The New England-style lobster roll at Captain’s Grille at Disney’s Yacht Club Resort (and check out the new red, white and blue costumes the servers will be wearing, just in time for the holiday). On a butter-toasted Parker House roll, it’s a classic New England recipe.Narcoossee’s at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is our go-to for fancy, super-fresh all-American seafood. Tuck into a 2-pound steamed Maine lobster, crispy Rhode Island calamari, pan-seared George’s Bank day boat scallops, and/or Alaskan wild-caught halibut. For a taste of the South, it’s Olivia’s Café at Disney’s Old Key West Resort: shrimp and grits or a shrimp po boy are our favorites. And just one more burger – the All-American Bacon Cheeseburger at ESPN Wide World of Sports Grill. Nothing fancy, just Cheddar cheese and bacon on an Angus burger. Add a draft beer, and you’ve got the quintessential July 4 meal.Happy July 4 Week! 17. Animal Kingdom was chock full of surprises on a recent visit! While Chester & Hester’s Dino-Rama debuted the Cotton Candy Carnival Cocktail, the Asia section’s Drinkwallah held a refreshing adult beverage find of its own: Coconut-Lychee Lemonade. Drinkwallah Sign Coconut-Lychee Lemonade One of the reasons I was intrigued by this new drink (aside from the whole “Coconut Rum” thing, that is ) is that it gives us a reason to explore this unique location a little more. Welcome sign Sure, it’s pretty much a small kiosk dedicated to its typically limited menu of frozen non-alcoholic beverages (Coke, Blue Raspberry, and Lemonade are the choices) and a few grab-and-go snacks. Drinkwallah Menu But that’s exactly what makes the high level of detail in this small snack stop so impressive. Like many places in Animal Kingdom, you could stroll right past Drinkwallah without realizing it, since it blends in so well with its surroundings. Drinkwallah kiosk You can spot a few clues, however, as to what’s available inside… Outdoor signage Ice Cold Refrigeration! … as well as what’s not . Drinkwallah signage Should you decide to stop inside based on the promise of cold beverages on a hot day, you’ll find that this is where the details really kick in. Just about every inch is packed with a huge array of trinkets, photographs, and artwork. Inside Drinkwallah Inside Drinkwallah Coke bottles inside Drinkwallah Poster on the wall Inside Drinkwallah I always like the detail of exposed electrical wires that you’ll find all over the Africa and Asia sections of Animal Kingdom. Light fixture Forgive the awkward angle of this shot of the Coke freezer, but I love the weathered look of it, and it at least gives you some idea as to how small this space is — I had just enough room to lean back and take this picture. Coke freezer In fact, I took the majority of these pictures through the outdoor windows – feeling oddly like a Disney-detail paparazzo — since there is so little room to move inside. The only thing that reminds you that you are in a theme park is the glow coming from the frozen drink machines themselves, and even they have been enhanced with unique fonts and topped off with materials marked by the “Anandapur Sheet Metal Company.” Frozen beverage machines at Drinkwallah Frozen beverage machines at Drinkwallah Once you ‘re set with your drink or snack, you’ll do best to follow the posted advice. Indoor signage It’s a great feeling to score a spot in this little building just behind Drinkwallah, equipped with a tall chair and – obviously – lots of shade. Building behind Drinkwallah But since that’s often already claimed, you can plan an escape to the lower garden. Lower Garden direction sign What a lovely little space… There isn’t much in the way of seating here, with most opting to grab their cold drinks and continue towards Expedition Everest. But if you do have a few moments to enjoy the view, you can grab a stool at one of the few umbrella-covered tables and look out over the water. The Lower Garden The boat sits docked, ready to make its delivery of more Coke bottles. Delivery boat Coke crates in boat And those unique details from inside continue outdoors as well. The back of Drinkwallah The back of Drinkwallah Masks hanging from trees around the Lower Garden I pulled up next to this guy… Statue in the Lower Garden …and now we’re finally ready to indulge in the whole reason for this little visit: the Coconut-Lychee Lemonade! Coconut-Lychee Lemonade The base of Odwalla Lemonade gets its coconut kick entirely from Parrot Bay Coconut Rum. The coconut came through more in the aftertaste, thanks to the just-tart-enough tang of the lemonade in the forefront. I didn’t pick up on a ton of the Lychee fruit flavor — only a subtle hint of something different. But I loved the overall flavor combo of this beverage, and how it provided just enough relaxation to take the edge off. Coconut-Lychee Lemonade At $6.75, it’s a teeny bit easier on the pocket than most adult beverages on property, which is great news because this is easily one I would come back for time and time again. I’m really hoping it stays around! I enjoyed seeing this spot expand its options just a bit, and will definitely remain on the lookout for any new treasures in this unique kiosk! 20. If you’re a World Cup fan, you probably already know that the matches are televised daily at ESPN Zone in the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort. You may have even seen fans lining up outside ESPN Zone prior to kickoff. Now the Downtown Disney District is offering an additional option for viewing the competition. Matches will be televised on a jumbo 10-by-16-foot outdoor LED screen in the Downtown Disney District common area, between ESPN Zone and Earl of Sandwich. When the World Cup semi-finals, third place and finals matches arrive on July 8, 9, 12 and 13, Downtown Disney District World Cup festivities will also feature a DJ and additional special activities for fans. Keep watching the Disney Parks Blog for future announcements about upcoming World Cup activities and follow @DisneylandDTD and @ESPNZoneAnaheim on Twitter! 21. If you are one of the more than 16,000 runners ‘dropping in’ to participate in The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend, October 3-4, at Walt Disney World Resort, then we have a little motivation to help you with your training. From the youngest runners in the runDisney Kids Races to the most experienced runners in the Disney Happy Haunted 5K Trail Run at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex and the 10-Miler, we often hear, “it’s all about the ‘bling’.” With that in mind, we are excited to share what waits for you at the finish lines of this year’s events. There will be no tricks, just treats when kids receive the Halloween-inspired Donald Duck medallion for participating in the diaper dash, 100m, 200m 400m and 1-Mile races. Be careful of hitchhiking ghosts if you are participating in the Disney Happy Haunted 5K Trail Run. New this year, the medallion glows in the dark! And nothing can be more fitting than the 2014 The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler medal, featuring The Hollywood Tower Hotel. Not only does this medal glow in the dark, the elevator moves up and down. Now, if you are not running race weekend or just hearing about runDisney, I invite you to check out runDisney.com, register for an upcoming event and put a little ‘bling’ around your neck. runDisney is ‘Glowing’ About The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror 10-Miler Weekend Medals by Robert Hitchcock: Originally posted on the Disney Parks Blog View the full article
  22. My fellow author Jennifer Fickley-Baker recently shared a video featuring Disney Stars Laura Marano from Disney Channel’s “Austin and Ally” and Vanessa Marano from ABC Family’s “Switched at Birth” during their recent visit to Disney Parks. During their trip to Disneyland Resort, they showed off their Disney Side style in another video recently published on the Disney Style YouTube channel. The image below contains a few things that Laura and Vanessa selected from Disney Parks. The sequin Minnie Mouse headband is one of the most popular items we carry. The red Mickey Mouse crop top that Vanessa wears isn’t currently offered at Disney Parks, but I found a classic Mickey Mouse tee that works just as well. Finally, Laura is sporting a gray Mickey Mouse shirt that is part of a new art program called “Whimsy.” Many of these items can be found at select locations in both Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resorts. In California, the best places to visit first include Disney Vault 28 and World of Disney at Downtown Disney District. In Florida, I suggest trying TrenD or Zoey & Pickles inside the newly opened Marketplace Co-Op in Downtown Disney Marketplace. You can see an image from Zoey & Pickles in the bottom right corner of the image above. You may also find a few select items, such as Beautifully Disney cosmetics, on our Disney Parks online store – DisneyParks.com/Store. 23. Drink beer, do good. Sounds like the perfect way to enjoy the Fourth of July! To that end, we have some fun news for readers who enjoy exploring the world of craft beer! The Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel, in conjunction with Tampa’s Cigar City Brewing, will offer eight Cigar City selections when they stage a “Taproom Takeover” at Cabana Bar and Beach Club July 2-8! Cabana Bar and Beach Club Guests of the hotel can enjoy Cigar City’s regionally brewed beer and cider on all eight of the Cabana Bar and Beach Club’s taps. A selection of Cigar City Brewing’s beers will also be available at the Dolphin’s Lobby Lounge. And on July 4, the endeavor will take on a charitable twist. One of the beers that will be available is Homefront IPA, and a portion of the proceeds from its sale will be donated to Operation Homefront, an organization providing services to military families across the nation. Homefront IPA This special brew is crafted in collaboration between several American microbreweries — Cigar City Brewing among them. In addition to Homefront IPA, beer and cider selections will include Helles Lager, Maduro Brown Ale, Invasion Pale Ale, Jai Lai IPA, Florida Cracker White Ale, Cigar City Cider, Cigar City Apple Pie Cider, Tocobaga Red Ale, Cubano Espresso Brown Ale, and Wandering Pelican Black Ale.
