Can’t wait for lunch? Head over to The Lunching Pad with us! Learn About: The Lunching PadMagic Kingdom Disney World RestaurantsYou’ll find this snack stop in Tomorrowland at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. And while it looks pretty unassuming, it’s a great place to enjoy Cream Cheese Pretzels, or even Mickey Soft Pretzels! But in addition to some of our favorite soft pretzel snacks and carbonated frozen drinks, there also an outlet for those delicious and inventive Gourmet Hot Dogs that you’ll find around the resort. Today, we’re taking a look at not one, not two, but three of these deluxe dogs for lunch. C’mon! AtmosphereSo, atmosphere at The Lunching Pad…well, what you see is pretty much what you get. The Lunching Pad at Rocketeer Plaza If you’ve been to Tomorrowland, you’ve seen the atmosphere of this spot. It’s really just a walk-up window. Ordering Window There are a few tables scattered nearby, complete with those awesome, padded Tomorrowland seats. And because The Lunching Pad is located beneath the PeopleMover and Astro-Orbiter, the overhang provides some much-welcomed shade when you stop here for a quick meal or snack. Seating But now that we’ve taken a (very quick!) tour around The Lunching Pad, let’s see about those dogs! EatsThe menu at this snack stop is very small. You have a handful of frozen, carbonated beverages, which are so amazing on a hot day! And you can get them in plain cups or sport bottles. And as we mentioned before, this is also a good place to snag a soft pretzel. Mickey Pretzel with Plastic Cheese But the star attractions here, if you’re looking for real sustenance, are the line up of over the top hot dogs. Menu — Click to Enlarge Let’s just take a moment to admire them, shall we? Today’s selections include, left to right, the BLT Hot Dog (NEW!), the Coney Island Dog, and the Philly Cheese Steak Dog. Specialty Hot Dogs from The Lunching Pad in Disney World’s Magic Kingdom We’ll start with the brand new-to-the-menu BLT Hot Dog. So I gotta admit that at first glance, this one was a little weird. I mean, there was a salad on my dog. BUT — there was also bacon. So that’s, you know, a salad I can get behind. BLT Hot Dog At any rate, if you distill this down to the sum of its flavors, it actually made more sense. After all, hot dogs have that same smokey, meaty flavor that you get in bacon. So, shockingly, this worked. BLT Hot Dog — Cross Section Next, I came to what was completely familiar territory for me — the Coney Island Dog. Now this is more like it. Hot dog, chili, mustard, onions, done. The way it should be. Coney Island Dog And it was every bit as good as it looks! Your GI system may not thank you, but your taste buds sure will. Coney Island Dog –Cross Section Finally, we arrived at our third variety — the Philly Cheese Steak Dog. This one was BY FAR my favorite! PLASTIC CHEEEEEEEEESE!!! This is hot dog, topped with cheese steak, onions, cheese, etc. or so it says. The authoritative statement that this is “cheese steak” may be challenged, and everyone knows that the cheese on a Philly Cheese Steak is hotly debated; but I don’t care what it is. It was gud. Philly Cheese Steak Hot Dog Plus, did I mention plastic cheese? Philly Cheese Steak Hot Dog — Cross Section You can’t go wrong with meat on meat. IMHO. OverallI’m a hot dog fan, so all of the hot dogs at Lunching Pad sounded pretty good, and tasting made a believer out of me. While we certainly had our individual favorites, I enjoyed them all. The main issue with all of these, however, was that the bun was a foot-long, but the dogs were regular sized. Wha??!! Just eat accordingly. So don’t worry if you find yourself famished, advance dining reservation-less, and the counter service location lines are snaking around your favorite attractions. You’ll find a hearty meal in the form of a hot dog at The Launching Pad. Which Launching Pad Hot Dog will you be trying on your next visit to Walt Disney World? Tell us your pick in comments! May I make a Disney food confession? I can’t – CAN’T – enter the Everything Pop Food Court at Disney’s Pop Century Resort… Everything Pop Food Court …and not indulge in a serving of Gravy Fries. Gravy Fries If you’ve visited Everything Pop, you may not have even seen Gravy Fries on the menu – they just get a small mention on the side of the screen at the sandwich station, and it rotates out occasionally to spotlight other items. Pop Century Sandwich Station Menu Basically, everything you need to know is in the name: Gravy. And. Fries. The fries are standard issue Disney fries. The beef gravy covering them is… well, I think it’s awesome – you can spot the bits of pepper to give it just a little zest, and it’s consistently thick and rich. Gravy close-up You actually need tools to tackle Gravy Fries… several napkins (they’re a gravy-frenzied mess!) and forks for the fries you just can’t pick up because you can’t find a gravy-free inch, what with all the gravy that oozes to the bottom of the container. Gravy Fries and accompanying tools Gravy Fries on fork Honestly, you don’t really need me to tell you if Gravy Fries are for you. You know right away. You probably find Gravy Fries either entirely appealing or completely horrifying, and that’s all there is to it. (For example, AJ and I part ways here…she wouldn’t touch ‘em, but they’re my holy grail.) If you’ve been to Pop Century, you know that some of its quirky appeal is in the background music loop that you hear upon entering the lobby and continuing into the Food Court. While chomping on Gravy Fries, I’ve enjoyed hearing “Hold My Hand,†by Hootie and the Blowfish, 50s dance hit “At the Hop,†“The Hustle†(perhaps you’ve seen the Pop Century Food & Beverage team dancing along to this one), and “Talkin’ in Your Sleep,†by the Romantics. But – for whatever reason – four times out of five when I’m eating Gravy Fries (yes, I eat them A LOT), I hear “St. Elmo’s Fire (Man in Motion)†from the 80s hit Brat Pack movie, “St. Elmo’s Fire.†“Remember When…” And herein lies the greatness of Everything Pop. Where else can you indulge in a complete guilty pleasure… while listening to nothing but guilty pleasures?! Retro sign If you find that other somewhere, let me know. Especially if they serve Gravy Fries. So, are Gravy Fries for you? Please let us know with a comment! Disney Food Blog Fans, be sure to check out our DFB Disney World Dining Guide e-Books! I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Joe Rohde, creative executive at Walt Disney Imagineering, about his inspirations for the design of Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa. Joe’s career has included such iconic projects as Disney’s Animal Kingdom; Expedition Everest; Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa; and the upcoming AVATAR-inspired land at Walt Disney World Resort. Today, Joe shares some of the magic and tradition behind what makes Aulani unlike anywhere else in the world. What is the significance behind the arch logo for Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa? The curved arch is based on a traditional Hawaiian canoe house as echoed in the framing of the Maka‘ala lobby as well as in the resort’s physical layout. What was the inspiration for the Maka‘ala lobby? Maka‘ala does several things all at once. It is a warm and welcoming place that expresses the spirit of aloha, acceptance and inclusion. But it also announces that this place – where you have arrived, Hawai‘i – is a special, unique and important place, and that there are stories to be learned here that you may not know … and LOTS of them. Lastly, it also suggests a feeling of elegance and artistry, which is consistent with true Hawaiian culture. What was the inspiration for the overall shape and design of Aulani and the Waikolohe Valley? The resort was designed to reflect the sense of a Hawaiian valley opening out toward the ocean from highlands to lowlands. This organization has many connotations. One is the ahupua’a, the traditional organization of land that followed a watershed from the mountains to the sea and knitted all members of the community together in a working relationship and a functional sustainable relationship to the land. Another is a Hawaiian concept of time itself as flowing – like fresh water – from the past, which is in the mountains, to the future, which is in the sea. The architectural statements of Aulani tend to follow this organizational layout. You know, of course, that Waikolohe means “mischievous water.†That name is simply meant to connote the playful aspect of the springs, which spray you from unexpected directions, and the presence of the Menehune. It is true that, along this part of the O’ahu coast, fresh water comes from springs, and we wanted to reflect that but in a fun, mischievous way. Hawaiian canoes are seen throughout Aulani. Why are canoes such a key aspect of the design? We wanted to use little clues here and there to celebrate the great canoe tradition of Hawai`i, because these canoes are at the very heart of what makes Hawaiian culture Hawaiian. Without these canoes there would be no Hawaiians at all. They express the highest form of artistry, engineering, symbolic meaning, purposefulness and social cooperation that Hawaiian culture stands for. In particular, we wanted to celebrate the Hokulea, the canoe that awakened the Hawaiian cultural revival in the 1970s and continues today on its worldwide voyage. “Who Dat†at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort? Well “Dat†is Drew Brees, eight time Pro Bowler and Super Bowl MVP quarterback of the New Orleans Saints. This week Brees called the sports complex home as more than 300 high school athletes from across the country participated in the exclusive Drew Brees Passing Academy. These young athletes had the opportunity to learn from Brees and train with other NFL superstars such as Larry Fitzgerald (Arizona Cardinals), Darren Sproles (Philadelphia Eagles) and Darrelle Revis (New England Patriots). Participants were exposed to new training techniques for conditioning and performance, and then participated with team members in a two-day 7-on-7 Tournament. Proceeds from the Drew Brees Passing Academy and 7-on-7 Tournament benefit The Brees Dream Foundation, established in 2003 to help cancer patients with quality care and education for children and families. Here is a look at the amazing experience these high school athletes enjoyed. ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex allows athletes of all ages and skill levels to compete and celebrate like the pros do; whether they go on to collegiate/professional fame or not, every athlete takes with them lessons learned that shapes their character, personal and professional development. Brees joins a long list of elite athletes such as Kerri Walsh Jennings, Casey Powell and several English Premiere League soccer players, that come to the complex to create unforgettable experiences with young athletes. Just in time for summer, the pretty Alfresco Tasting Terrace on the second floor of Golden Vine Winery at Disney California Adventure park is debuting a new menu and a very cool wine list. There are just 40 seats and you don’t need reservations, so it’s perfect for a small Mediterranean-inspired plate and a delicious sip of wine on the open-air veranda. The unique wine list is the only one at any Disney Resort to feature all eight wineries of the “Disney Family of Wines,†a diverse collection that has a personal connection to the Disney name: an artistic talent, a sense of what makes for good storytelling, quintessential family DNA . . . all of the wineries display qualities long identified with Walt Disney and The Walt Disney Company, carrying on the Disney legacy and typifying the passion, innovation and quality that the name Disney symbolizes. Only three of the wines have previously been offered at Golden Vine Winery: MacMurray Ranch, Silverado Vineyards and Lasseter Family Winery. The others are new to the restaurant. The family of eight includes: Fess Parker WineryMacMurray RanchSilverado VineyardsLasseter Family WineryGogi (owned by actor Kurt Russell)Frank Family VineyardsChappellet WinerySkywalker VineyardsOrder red, white or rosé by the glass or bottle, or try a featured flight to go with one of these delectable small plates. Guest-pleasing Fritto Misto remains on the menu, a crisp stack of calamari, mussels, green beans, and artichokes with pepperoncini aïoli for dipping. But everything else is new. Try the Aged Cheddar-Risotto Bites with roasted garlic-herb aïoli and marinara. Or the Bruschetta classically topped with fresh tomatoes, basil, garlic and Parmesan. The Charcuterie and Cheese board is perfect for sharing and features Gorgonzola blue cheese, Fontina, Prosciutto Di Parma, Spanish-style chorizo, green olives, marinated mushrooms, walnuts, and dry-cured black Beldi olives. Grilled Shrimp gets a kick with Spanish chorizo. Additionally, there’s a filling trio of Beef Tenderloin Sliders with horseradish and caramelized onion aïoli, and an offering of fancy Roasted Duck Rillettes, similar to pâté, and served with crostini, orange marmalade and buttery Castelvetrano Olives. Sit back, relax, savor and watch the world go by from your second-floor perch. It’s especially delightful after dark, with gorgeous vistas of Ornament Valley inside Cars Land. Your family will spend an enchanting two nights in this fairytale castle, appointed with a host of modern amenities and a breathtaking view of Lake Edersee while dining. In the morning, the whole family can take a closer look at Lake Edersee while on a privately guided bike ride through the delightful German countryside, followed by a relaxing boat ride on the lake. Disney's lead blogger, Thomas Smith, gave a frank and sometimes funny talk on Thursday about the Disney Parks Blog. He gave plenty of examples from the blog, but he also dished a little on how Walt Disney Company's legal department keeps a close watch on communication. View the full article

Good food is tops. But having a delicious meal with a lovely view makes everything taste even better, I think. And I’m pretty sure you agree with me, since we both love Disney! Disneyland Dole Whip Float I’m feeling a little homesick for the Park that Started It All today, so I thought I’d take a virtual trip to Disneyland and check out a few of my favorite spots that offer not just great food, but also cool stuff to look at. I’ll be honest — sometimes, it’s the view that draws me to a couple of these spots, even more than the eats! Let’s take a look at some of our favorite Disneyland Meals with a View! Blue BayouWhen thinking of a restaurant with a view, your mind may immediately jump to something outside — say, a river or a mountain. We’ll get to those, for sure — but we’re going to start with the Bayou. That’s right. Our first meal with a view takes place at that Disney landmark, Blue Bayou. It may be Southern Cali sunny when you enter, but inside, the sky is inky blue, and the mood is foreboding. Night Falls on the Bayou Something mysterious and slightly sinister is in the air. Could it be…Pirates? Should We Warn Them They’re About to Encounter Scallywags? Yes, indeedy! Because Blue Bayou overlooks the entrance to Pirates of the Caribbean. So you’ll have a chance to see folks off at the beginning of their perilous journey. Fortunately, you’re safe on the terrace of this gracious Southern mansion, about to tuck into some delicious, Cajun-inspired food. The Beautiful Terrace Seating Area Blue Bayou is open for lunch and dinner, but we prefer the former. That’s the only time you can get the famous and incredibly delicious Monte Cristo Sandwich. Le Special de Monte Cristo Sandwich Classic food with a classic view. It’s a pretty special way to pass the time. Cove BarWhen I’m in the mood for a little grown-up libation, I love to head over to Cove Bar in Disney California Adventure. You’ll find this somewhat hidden gem situated above Ariel’s Grotto overlooking Paradise Pier. And it’s the location that makes this stop so special (though the food ain’t half bad). View from Cove Bar That covered area with the beautiful seaside touches is a great place to relax and unwind. With the shady patio seating and close proximity to the water, you’ll often enjoy cool breezes that make you feel like you’re inside and outside at the same time! And while most of the drinks here are part of the Standard Disney Bar Menu, you will find a couple specialty drinks as well. Personally, I think it’s a fantastic opportunity to indulge in that Disney classic cocktail, the Blue Glow-tini! Disney’s Blue Glow-Tini And don’t skip Cove Bar if you are hungry. They have an interesting menu of pub grub as well. The Tri-Tip Sliders look especially inviting! Hungry Bear RestaurantThink seclusion is impossible at Disneyland? Think again. Allow me to share with you a table with a view at Hungry Bear Restaurant. Located in Critter Country, you’ll have a little bit of a hike to get to this spot. Hungry Bear is at the way, way, WAY back of the Park. But once you get there, you’re richly rewarded. It’s like eating your lunch in a treehouse! Cool Hungry Bear Seating! While the three different levels of seating all have their charms, I recommend a seat by the water, where you’ll have a lovely view of the Rivers of America. This serene slice of Disneyland is a great place to relax for a little while between fun attractions. View from the Hungry Bear The menu here is counter service Sandwiches and Salads with some interesting options, like the mammoth Pioneer Chili Cheeseburger. Their Crispy Chicken Sandwich gets good marks too. Pioneer Chili Cheeseburger And who can pass up a Lemon Bumblebee Cupcake with Lemon-Cream Filling and Honey-Lemon Frosting?!? Not me! Lemon Bumblebee Cupcake So above all, be sure to save room for dessert! Flo’s V-8 CafeLet’s see…we’ve seen plenty of water so far. How about we hit the desert next? That’s what you’ll find when you travel Route 66 for a stop at Flo’s V-8 Cafe! This particular part of the Mother Road winds through Cars Land, of course. So you’ll see sweeping vistas surrounding Radiator Springs Racers! Outdoor Seating Overlooking Radiator Springs and the Desert And the level of detail here really does make you think you’ve wandered right into the movie screen. You’ll be convinced that you’re visiting Carburetor County when you visit Flo’s. The views of the town and rock formations are stunning, but save some time to have a look around Flo’s inside as well. There’s so much to take in! Motor Oil and Gas Pumps on the Patio As beautiful as the view is during the daytime, be sure to swing back through Cars Land at night. Seeing Flo’s lit up in all of her fluorescent splendor is truly something special. Flo’s V-8 Cafe in Disney California Adventure With homestyle, diner-inspired food, you won’t leave hungry. I enjoyed the Roast Beef Dinner during my last visit. Roast Beef Dinner But milkshakes and desserts are pretty delicious, too. I fell hard for the Chocolate Mud Pie! Chocolate Mud Pie But you won’t go wrong ordering Flo’s Ugly Crust Pies, either! The flavors change up seasonally, but when in doubt, you can always snag Flo’s Signature Apple-Cheddar Pie-O-Rama! And there you have it — Meals with a View, Disneyland-style. Eat for sure. And enjoy those delicious meals! But don’t forget to take in the lovely surroundings too. It’s a great way to unwind during a fun, hectic day in the Happiest Place on Earth. What are your picks for meals with a view when visiting Disneyland? Weigh in below with your votes in comments!
