For the past few months, I’ve been sharing many details about my favorite new shopping destination at Walt Disney World Resort – the Marketplace Co-Op in Downtown Disney Marketplace. Containing six different boutiques, this location serves as our testing space for new products, retail concepts and guest experiences. I think my favorite boutique inside the shop is D-Tech on Demand as it combines rapid printing technology with great artwork to create personalized electronic accessories for guests. I recently spoke with merchandiser Kevin-Michael Lezotte to get the inside scoop on how D-Tech on Demand works. Currently, we offer cases for the following phones – iPhone 4/4S, iPhone 5/5S, iPhone 5C, Samsung Galaxy SIII and Samsung Galaxy S4. I loved watching how quickly cases are printed as the team can print several cases at one time. The printer uses UV ink which dries immediately and requires no cooling time. As soon as my case was finished, I covered my mobile phone. Kevin-Michael shared that it’s easy to add additional designs to the D-Tech on Demand system. We recently introduced 12 new designs featuring characters from Disney’s “Frozen.†Four of those designs are only found at the Marketplace Co-Op as seen in the image above. Fans of Disney Villains, Donald Duck, Pluto, Figment, or Chip and Dale should look for additional artwork being added to the location later this summer. I would love to see which case you select. Use #DisneySide if you share an image of your phone case on a social network like Twitter, Facebook or Instagram. Something magical happens as the sun sets over Spaceship Earth. All of Epcot takes on an ethereal radiance. After all, day or night, you’re under the magic spell of Walt Disney Imagineering at a Disney Park, so evenings bring on their meticulous skills in lighting your way through another chapter of your Epcot “story.†Your night for spectacular attractions and entertainment Even if you’ve never visited Epcot before, try to picture it all in your mind’s eye. The sun is disappearing into ribbons of gold and red clouds as you enter Test Track. Your vehicle speeds to a furious pace. It bursts from the show building and zooms you around the track, the lights of Epcot flashing in all directions. You take in a few more attractions and it’s off to World Showcase. Each pavilion is bathed in its own special glow. This is a particularly special night for you. Magical things await, things you’ve never experienced before and they each involve tasty treats. But it’s still a little early and you’d like a quick meal now, so you enjoy fish and chips at the United Kingdom pavilion (nothing seems to compare to them). Your night for IllumiNations Sparkling Dessert Party World Showcase Lagoon shimmers in the evening lights, as if in anticipation of IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth — the nightly fireworks, laser and music extravaganza. Here’s the nice part: You’re assured a wonderful view because you’ve booked the IllumiNations Sparkling Dessert Party. In addition to experiencing the show from a fantastic vantage point, you’re going to enjoy delectable desserts served with coffee, tea or even a sparkling wine. Mmm. The chefs have outdone themselves on this evening’s dessert masterpieces. Food always tastes better when they make it. How do they do it? Even though you shouldn’t, you decide to fill another dessert plate with those little chocolate thingies — so soft, so rich. Better save some room though. There’s more to enjoy later. As the IllumiNations finale fills the entire sky with the glorious spectacle that could only happen at a Disney Park, you breathe a contented sigh. Because you also booked the Epcot After Hours Wind Down, you don’t have to make your way to the exit with the throngs of other guests. Your night for Epcot After Hours Wind Down For this, your first time to try this brand-new Epcot experience, you’ve chosen Spice Road Table in the Morocco pavilion as your restaurant. The buzz has been good. As a fan of tapas, it’s the chance you’ve been waiting for. (Incidentally, you might also want to visit Spice Road Table at other times of the day. If you happen to be a Walt Disney World Passholder, you have another reason to visit: a 30% discount off the regular menu now through September 17, 2014!) A sense of calm falls over you as the cast members welcome you. Warm, friendly conversation murmurs in the elegant, intimate Spice Road Table dining room, where you are seated with a lovely view of World Showcase Lagoon. Since Epcot After Hours Wind Down includes a wine flight, you are presented with three superb international wines, each with its own flavors and scents of fine fruits and spices. You sip a little of each, comparing the “personalities†of each wine. Three hot, tempting tapas are placed before you. Tonight, one of them is a lamb slider. Lamb has such a delightfully distinctive taste — and this is a fabulous way to enjoy it. Two petite Moroccan Lamb Sausages are completely different from the sliders but equally superb in preparation and presentation. But your favorite is the Harissa Chicken Roll, a blend of exotic spices of the east with chicken nestled in a light crusty roll. There’s no hurry. You savor each morsel, the wine cleansing your palate between every few bites. Authentic music plays in the background. The stars shine over Epcot through the picture windows. A great way to top off the evening. Perhaps most comforting of all is your leisurely stroll along World Showcase promenade, the desserts, tapas and wine adding a light spring to your step. It’s just you and a handful of other delighted guests — ambling through the peaceful pavilions toward Spaceship Earth in the distance. It’s as if this world is here just for you. And you know what? It is. Summer Nights to Savor: Epcot Presents a Nighttime Transformation by Greg Ehrbar: Originally posted on the Disney Parks Blog View the full article

Disney Parks After Dark: Splash Mountain at Disneyland Park
Disney4me posted a topic in Disney Blogs
This “Disney Parks After Dark†post is in celebration of 25 “Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah†years of Splash Mountain at Disneyland park. Splash Mountain opened on July 17, 1989, in Critter Country and features the story of Brer Rabbit, Brer Fox and Brer Bear. Most Disneyland park guests ride Splash Mountain to cool off on a hot summer day, but I enjoy riding it after dark because it makes the five-story splashdown that much more thrilling. I have a super special treat for you today! Learn About: JikoAnimal Kingdom Lodge Disney World RestaurantsI know I’m not the only person in love with the Macaroni and Cheese at Jiko, right? This signature restaurant at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge — and this dish in particular! — regularly tops my list when I’m visiting Disney World. And when you run into me having dinner here, chances are better than great that I’ll be enjoying their Oak-Grilled Filet with a side of their amazing Mac and Cheese. While the filet is a mainstay on their menu, the side dishes that it’s paired with tend to change up regularly. But Jiko created a legend with the filet and cheesy goodness combo; it had legions of fans! So normally, even if the mac and cheese isn’t on the menu, you can request it. Oak Grilled Filet with Mac and Cheese And now you can make it at home too! Jiko’s Macaroni and CheeseJiko — The Cooking Place, Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge Serves 4 to 6 Ingredients: 3 tablespoons unsalted butter 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour 2 1/2 cups whole milk 8 ounces shredded Italian four-cheese blend (such as mozzarella, asiago, fontina and provolone) 1/4 teaspoon coarse salt 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 1 pound elbow macaroni, cooked and kept warm Instructions: 1. Melt butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add flour, stirring until combined. Cook, stirring frequently, for 5 minutes, or until golden (do not let brown). 2. Add milk to butter mixture, whisking until completely smooth and no lumps remain. 3. Simmer mixture, stirring frequently, until sauce coats the back of a spoon, 5 to 8 minutes. 4. Add cheese to saucepan in batches, stirring until completely melted. Add salt and pepper, stirring to combine. 5. Place cooked macaroni in a large bowl. Add cheese sauce, stirring to combine. Serve immediately. Pretty simple, huh? And now I’m off to the pantry and the fridge to see if I have everything on hand to whip up a batch of this tonight!! Will you be whipping up a side of Jiko’s Mac and Cheese for your dinner table tonight? Leave a comment and tell us all about it! Ahoy! As a Cruise Director, I am surrounded by top-notch entertainment and events aboard our ships all year long. But even I was completely blown away last fall during our inaugural Halloween on the High Seas cruises aboard the Disney Dream! One of my favorite features was definitely the giant Pumpkin Tree that towered over the atrium lobby, which I want to tell you more about today … and give you an exclusive sneak peek at the spooky sketches for the Pumpkin Trees coming to the Disney Magic, Disney Wonder and Disney Fantasy. That’s right … We are bringing the ghoulish fun of Halloween on the High Seas to all four ships, which means each lobby will have its very own Pumpkin Tree! Halloween fun is always part of a the excitement of a Disney cruise in October, but for the first time ever, beginning in September we are offering everyone the extra-special celebration that premiered on the Disney Dream last year. (To learn more about our Halloween on the High Seas cruises, check out the 7 Reasons Halloween is Better on the High Seas video Jonathan shared last week.) Our Pumpkin Trees are inspired by Ray Bradbury’s classic tale about the traditions of Halloween, “The Halloween Tree.†During every sailing, the trees magically transform from eerie and barren into the life of the party, with sprouting Jack-O-Lanterns, flickering lights and a booming voice. Each Pumpkin Tree is tended to by a mysterious caretaker, who tells stories of the haunted holiday as guests gather in the ghostly shadow of the tree. What makes our Pumpkin Trees even more magical is that each one has its own unique look and personality, so guests have something different to look forward to aboard every ship. We’re planting the seeds for these trees right now, but our team shared concept art that I thought you’d enjoy seeing. Here’s a first look at the frighteningly friendly faces that you will meet aboard our haunted Halloween voyages this fall: Which ship’s magical Pumpkin Tree will you see rooted this fall? If it’s the Disney Dream, I’ll see you then! First Look at the New Disney Cruise Line Halloween Pumpkin Trees by Christiaan Abbott: Originally posted on the Disney Parks Blog View the full article

One of the greatest opportunities during a vacation to Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, is the chance to explore the beautiful island of O’ahu. From the beaches to tropical rainforests and a bustling metropolitan city, this island of Hawai’i has something for everyone. A highlight of my visit to Aulani was driving along the coast with a stop for Hawaiian shave ice, a hike to Waimea Falls and a beachside lunch. Today, I wanted share five fantastic destinations on O’ahu that are not to be missed during your Aulani vacation! 1. North Shore - Stretching for more than seven miles along the O’ahu coast, the North Shore attracts surfers from around the world. If you are hoping to see some big waves, I recommend visiting the North Shore between November – February. However, if you have any new surfers in your ‘ohana, the waves in May – September are more tranquil and perfect for beginners. After a day along the shore, stop by the town of Haleiwa to pick up a delicious meal from a shrimp truck and save room for Hawaiian shave ice for dessert! 2. Waimea Falls - Waimea Valley is a living example of a traditional Hawaiian ahupua’a (land division that extends from the mountain to the shore.) If you want to visit this legendary location, I strongly recommend the excursion available through the Aulani tour desk. This exclusive adventure includes transportation from the resort and a guided tour of Waimea Valley by a local expert. Learn more here. 3. Waikiki - Known in Hawaiian as “spouting waters,” Waikiki is O’ahu’s main hotel and resort area, featuring world-class shopping, dining and entertainment! Your keiki will have a blast exploring the Honolulu Zoo and Waikiki Aquarium. You can also learn how to surf along the shores that legendary waterman Duke Kahanamoku grew up surfing. At night, Waikiki turns into a bustling and energetic hot spot, ready for anyone looking to dance the night away. 4. Pearl Harbor – Exploring Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial is at the top of my must-do list for anyone visiting O’ahu, and Aulani offers a fantastic excursion to explore this historic harbor. Transportation to Pearl Harbor, as well as access to the Navy vessel that transports you to the USS Arizona Memorial is included. Learn more here. 5. Diamond Head – One of most iconic monuments on the Hawaiian islands is Diamond Head, located just a few miles from Waikiki. This crater was named by 19th century British sailors who thought they discovered diamonds along the slopes. Unfortunately, these rocks turned out to be calcite crystals with very little (if any) value! While a little strenuous, the hike to the top of Diamond Head offers one of the most breathtaking views of the island. Where is your favorite place to explore on the island of O’ahu? Leave your answer in the comments below! Five Places to Explore on O’ahu During Your Vacation to Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa by Tyler Slater: Originally posted on the Disney Parks Blog View the full article

We’ve shared a few blog updates on Disney Infinity, but today’s may be our favorite. Disney Interactive is adding Disney characters Stitch and Tinker Bell to the next edition of the game when it launches this fall. Disney Infinity will also feature new Disney Parks-inspired content you’ll instantly recognize, like the Main Street Electrical Parade. Here’s a first look at the new trailer where Stitch and Tink create their own Magic Kingdom. Stitch and Tinker Bell were two of the most requested characters by the Disney Infinity fan community. Their Toy Box figures will be available in retail stores this fall. Our friends at Disney Interactive also say additional play sets and characters will be announced in the coming months so keep an eye on infinity.disney.com and the Disney Parks Blog for more updates. Greetings from Costa Rica once again as I continue to share highlights from the teen-focused Adventures by Disney trip through this breathtaking region! Since my last update our travels have taken us to the Arenal volcano region, where our teenage photographers have had some time to take a break from snapping photos to focus on enjoying the fun and adrenaline-pumping adventures that abound here. Here is a photo I captured of one of the teens, Faris, as he gets ready to zip line through the rainforest treetops and literally soar across the sky! The weather has been rainy (which is fitting considering we are in a rainforest after all), which has made photography tricky and given me a good reason to break out my waterproof Nikon 1-AW1, but the excitement and adventure continues. And we’ve had some time to relax and unwind as well with an evening dip in natural hot springs that are heated by the volcano itself. The teens certainly seemed to enjoy it. Now onto our next adventure, which includes white water rafting and a trip to Guanacaste on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. I’ll be sharing more stories and, of course, more photos along the way. Tomorrow is the 25th anniversary of Splash Mountain at Disneyland park. When the attraction opened on July 17, 1989, the surrounding area transformed into Critter Country, the woodland home of many favorite critters. Today, we’re celebrating the 25th anniversary of this land with five fun details you may have missed while exploring this shaded corner of Disneyland park. 1. Fowler’s Harbor - Near the entrance of Critter Country, you’ll find Fowler’s Harbor – named for Admiral Joe Fowler, who oversaw the construction of Disneyland park in the 1950s. This small harbor is home to the Sailing Ship Columbia or the Mark Twain Riverboat when they are not cruising the Rivers of America. 2. Max, Buff & Melvin from Country Bear Jamboree - Deep in the Hundred Acre Wood, you can find a tribute to former Disneyland park attraction, Country Bear Jamboree. I don’t want to give it away completely, but Max, Buff & Melvin, the three talking trophy heads from the show, have taken up residence inside The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Look for these beloved characters in the scene where Winnie the Pooh enjoys his favorite treat, honey. 3. Pooh Corner – As you exit The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, follow the pathway straight into Pooh Corner. Here you’ll see the story of the attraction continues into the shops of Critter Country! Banners celebrating Pooh’s birthday are hung from the ceiling, and other elements from his fantasy decorate the location. Don’t forget a Tigger Tail on your way out! 4. Rufus the bear in Bear Country - Before Critter Country opened, this area of Disneyland park was known as Bear Country (and before that, it was part of Frontierland). Near the entrance, you could hear Rufus the bear snoring inside a cliffside cave just past the Haunted Mansion. When Splash Mountain opened in 1989, there was a small nod to this sleeping bear inside the attraction, right before the first waterfall. Today, listen for Brer Bear snoring in the same spot and it might sound vaguely familiar … 5. America Sings cast at Splash Mountain - Some of the characters from the former America Sings attraction have been re-cast to play supporting roles in Splash Mountain! Look for some of the characters welcoming Brer Rabbit home and singing about a “zip-a-dee-do-dah†day. What is your favorite detail in Critter Country? Leave you answer in the comments below! We are getting our first details today about the restaurant that will replace Kouzzina at Disney’s BoardWalk when it closes later this year. Trattoria al Forno will join other eateries at the deluxe hotel and entertainment district. The restaurant is slated to open this December. The menu will feature Italian fare with an emphasis on regional specialities and classic preparations. Many ingredients will actually be made from scratch, in-house. We can’t wait to try the freshly handcrafted Mozzarella and the house-made Cavatelli! The restaurant will also have wood-burning ovens, and they’ll put them to good use making — you guessed it! — Neopolitan-style Pizza! Will it be like Via Napoli meets the BoardWalk? Sounds good to me! I’m Hoping for Pizzas Like the Quattro Fromaggi from Via Napoli! But they aren’t stopping there. Eating through Trattoria al Forno’s menu will be like taking a culinary tour across Italy. Guests can choose from a Bolognese made with Braised Beef, inspired by the dishes of Bologna. If you’re looking for a rich dish, you may want to try the Tagliatelli Carbonara from Rome (yes; that will be my first choice, in case you were wondering). Pork Chops prepared in the style of Milan will be another menu item. But those looking for more familiar Italian dishes will also find favorites like Chicken Parmigiana. I’m also seriously excited that they’ll feature Seasonal Risottos! YA HOO!!!!!!!!!! The wine list also promises to be something special, as the restaurant will source only Italian Wines. With more than 60 wines available by the bottle and over 25 available by the glass, wine lovers will have lots to choose from. The beverage menu will also include an assortment of cocktails, Italian beers, and sodas. Can we hope for Acqua Frescas? Because that would be awesome. Expect to see a custom blended coffee created just for Trattoria al Forno, too. We’re Betting on Some Great Italian Wine Flights Here are a few other menu items that we know about: Antipasti, including Italian Meats, Olives, and CaponataShrimp with Garlic, Capers and Anchovy Butter served with PolentaWhole Roasted Fish with Roasted VegetablesBaked LasagnaGrilled SteakSlow-cooked Lamb Shank with PolentaEggplant RollatiniRuffled Campanelle Pasta with Green Beans, Roasted Potatoes and Genovese PestoDesserts, including Tiramisù, Lemon Panna Cotta with Almond Crunch and Berries, Gelatos, and Bomboloni (Italian Doughnut Holes) with Dark Chocolate and Vanilla Gelato. It sounds pretty impressive. While there’s no word yet on when Disney will begin to accept Advance Dining Reservations, we do know that Kouzzina by Cat Cora will be closing its doors on September 30. This spot on the BoardWalk has long been occupied by restaurants featuring Mediterranean flavors — first Spoodles and then Kouzzina. And now, Trattoria al Forno. We’re looking forward to seeing what this next chapter in the restaurant’s life will bring. Are you excited to see the changes coming to the BoardWalk’s restaurant later this year? “Happy World Snake Day!†is not something I ever imagined I would wish anyone, but after seeing first-hand the incredible work to bring one snake species back from near extinction, I am now a fan. For 14 years, the Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund (DWCF) has supported the Antiguan Racer Project. This multi-faceted conservation program is a partnership between the Environmental Awareness Group in Antigua (in the lower Caribbean) and Fauna & Flora International. The Antiguan Racer is a very docile reptile which had been almost completed wiped out by the mongoose, a predator actually introduced to the island to manage the rat population. Since mongooses (or mongeese) are active during the day and rats are active at night, the mongoose didn’t actually complete the work for which it was introduced to the island. As the mongoose population grew (and the Antiguan Racer population decreased), overpopulation began to upset the delicate island ecosystem, and in this case, bird populations were affected as well. The dedicated people who run the program with support from Dr. Jenny Daltry explain this much better than I, so I hope you will take a few minutes to hear their story. Afterward, I think you, too, might celebrate snakes in a whole new light. The Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund is supported by guest contributions at various merchandise locations throughout Disney Parks and Resorts, as well as aboard Disney Cruise Line. One hundred percent of donations are matched by The Walt Disney Company and directed to nonprofit organizations through the conservation awards process.
