Joe Rohde is officially a Disney Legend. ©Disney As part of the D23 Ultimate Fan Event in August of 2024, Disney inducted its latest class of Legends. Among Hollywood heavyweights like Harrison Ford, Jamie Lee Curtis, James L. Brooks, and composer John Williams, Disney Imagineering icon Joe Rohde officially took his rightful place amongst the Disney pantheon. Joe Rohde’s Disney career lasted from 1980 through January of 2021, and saw the designer spearhead countless Disney projects including Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout, Pandora: The World of Avatar, the Aulani resort in Hawaii, and arguably most importantly of all: Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park from its conception. However, to a generation of Disney fans, there’s something else very recognizable about Rohde. “The earring is a celebrity and I am the friend of the celebrity. I travel with the earring and people see the earring and they’re ere like ‘Oh, that’s that famous guy. Who’s this person with him?’ I started in 1987, cause I was going to go on a business trip to Japan and I had one of those little tiny posts from the 1980s, and my boss from the model shop had said ‘You know, you kinda don’t look like a Disney employee’ cause of the long hair and etc. ‘so maybe you shouldn’t wear any Disney ID while you’re in Japan?’ And I thought ‘That’s not fair, I’ve been working for this company for 7 years’ so I took my Disney 5-Year Pin, which is a lapel pin, and I stuck it through that little tiny hole in my ear, which made the hole bigger and started a cascade of other decisions. Basically, when I go someplace I’ve never been before, a country, I look for a hoop-shaped earring — usually ethnic or tribal or something but nowadays anything — and it goes in my ear. Now of course, I have a bowl of them at home. This (gestures to ear) is the travel pack.” The iconic earring The day after the Disney Legends ceremony, Rohde took to his Instagram account to speak more seriously about the honoring, captioning a collection of videos from the event with the following: “First of all, as much as it’s an honor to become a Disney Legend, it’s a huge honor to be introduced by Jane Goodall!!! She has been an inspiration to me since I was a kid! I kept my promise to be brief, but there is so much to say. We each have something to contribute to the betterment of the world. If Janes’s introduction means anything it is that you should not assume that you cannot contribute. After all, I am a theme park designer, of all things. Thank you to everyone who made this career possible, But mostly thank you to all those nice people and their happy applause for a shy bookish kid from a scruffy neighborhood. (For all the folks in Hawaii, I did wear my leihulu.)” ©Disney Joe Rohde is one of the most important Imagineers in the history of the Walt Disney Company, and it’s very fitting that he — and his iconic earring — have been officially enshrined as a Disney Legend. The Hungry Bear Restaurant in Critter Country at Disneyland Park is getting a retheme soon and Disney just released a look at the NEW menu! ©Disney The restaurant is being renamed to Hungry Bear Barbecue Jamboree where you will be able to find the bears’ favorite barbecue food at the rethemed restaurant. This retheme will even include a “soundtrack of their greatest hits.” We just got a look at the NEW food coming to Hungry Bear Barbecue Jamboree and we are drooling a bit over here. While Disney still did not announce a date that we will be able to experience this transformed Disneyland restaurant, we can start preparing for what we are going to order once it does! After touring from coast to coast performing their tunes, Henry, Wendell, Big Al, and the rest of the gang have put together some of the favorite regional barbecue dishes they discovered along the way, just for you. You’ll want to try these bites, including the mouthwatering Smoked Barbecue Combo Platter with a selection of house-smoked meats, which will also be available on mobile order. Wow! What a memorable week celebrating with everyone at D23: The Ultimate Fan Event. We have so much to look forward to, especially for Disney Cruise Line! Over the weekend, we announced further expansion of the fleet; that “Disney Hercules” will debut on the Disney Destiny in 2025; and shared a first look at a new rendering from “Disney The Tale of Moana” premiering on the Disney Treasure later this year. One, Two, Three, Four… New Ships! That’s right! An additional four ships will join the award-winning fleet, giving families more opportunities to experience the world-class dining, exceptional entertainment, and signature hospitality that Disney Cruise Line is known for. With five ships in the current fleet and four others already in the works, these four new ships – which will debut between 2027 and 2031 – will bring the fleet to a total of 13. The ship names, designs, and itineraries are still in development. From Zero to Hero: Disney Cruise Line to Debut All-New “Hercules” Stage Show Your favorite Greek gladiator will take center stage onboard the Disney Destiny in an all-new, Broadway-style show, “Disney Hercules” when the ship sets sail in November 2025. This lively retelling of the popular Walt Disney Animation Studios film will feature the iconic music and larger-than-life characters we all know and love from the original movie, presented in an all-new way. Mythical Melodies: New Take on a Timeless Tale Developed exclusively for the Disney Destiny, “Disney Hercules” will stay true to the story and spirit of the film while showcasing a bold, modern adaptation tailor-made for the stage. The production will draw on the creative team’s extensive and diverse experience that ranges from theatre to pop music. Get ready for show-stopping musical numbers, incredible vocals, stunning visuals, immersive projection effects and so much more! The scene depicts Moana as she takes her final stand against Te Kā, the fiery lava-wielding foe who will appear on stage as an incredible fifteen-foot-tall puppet, the largest puppet ever produced for a Disney Cruise Line show. “Disney The Tale of Moana” will also portray Moana’s courageous determination to restore the heart of Te Fiti and the resulting transformation of the Te Kā puppet into her true self, a stunning green goddess. Audiences will see many of their favorite characters from the film reimagined as puppets, including a young version of Moana. NEW VILLAINS LAND This past weekend at the D23 Ultimate Fan Event, Disney released a slew of information about upcoming theme park projects including a new Cars area coming to Magic Kingdom, new Marvel and Avatar experiences at the Disneyland Resort, and Monster’s Inc. at Hollywood Studios. However, for longtime Disney Parks fans, there was arguably nothing more exciting than Villains Land. Rumors of a Disney Villains-themed land coming to the Magic Kingdom have been a mainstay of the Disney fan community for decades, with alleged plans dating back to the 1990s. That long wait made it a dream — or perhaps a nightmare is more appropriate — come true for fans when the land was FINALLY announced at D23. During the announcement, Josh D’Amaro said of the land, “Be prepared, you poor unfortunate souls, it’s going to be a fearless new vision for what a Disney experience can be.” Older Villains Land Now, days after the D23 announcement, Disney has confirmed further details about the highly-anticipated land, including its location. According to the Disney, “guests will be able to venture Beyond Big Thunder Mountain into an all-new land dedicated to Disney Villains. Inspired by the wicked characters fans know and loathe, the multi-acre expansion will include two major attractions, plus dining and shopping. It has been a HUGE weekend of announcements and we got a sneak peek at so many new attractions that will be coming to Disney World in the next few years during D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. Cinderella Castle We learned more about Pablo Esperanza which will be replacing DinoLand U.S.A. in Disney’s Animal Kingdom, as well as found out about a Monsters, Inc. land coming to Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Magic Kingdom also got some big news with BOTH a Villains land and a Cars land announced for the park. There have been some discussions on where these new lands will be going in Magic Kingdom, and we just got some confirmation on where they will be located. Disney offically announced where the Cars land will be located in Magic Kingdom! ©Disney The Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island will be transformed into this brand-new land coming to the park. That means that Cars land will be located in Frontierland and as Disney wrote will, “put our guests in the driver’s seat as we—quite literally—explore a new frontier in Frontierland.” Cars is coming to Magic Kingdom! ©Disney This new expansion in Magic Kingdom will include the addition of two Cars attractions. The first one will have you racing through the mountains and along wild terrains, all while trying to dodge geysers and splashing through mud holes. While the second attraction will be more family-friendly and geared for smaller racers. ©Disney We took a look at the current Magic Kingdom map and based on Disney’s announcement and the concept art, the red line here indicates where we expect the new Cars area to be. In addition to getting up close and personal with monsters and villains, soon you’ll be able to explore the uncharted territory of the great outdoors with an expansion in Frontierland themed around Pixar Animation Studios’ “Cars.” It’s time to leave Radiator Springs and head west into exciting new locations. To make way for this completely new frontier, the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island will be transformed into vast and rugged terrains for a rally race with some of the world’s most iconic racers. “We are thrilled to create this original Cars adventure and put our guests in the driver’s seat as we—quite literally—explore a new frontier in Frontierland,” shared Michael Hundgen, Walt Disney World Portfolio Executive Producer at Walt Disney Imagineering. “Part of pioneering this new story includes tapping into the themes of exploration and adventure that inspire so many of us to keep propelling forward. First, we learned that an all-new Lion King Land is on the horizon in Disney Adventure World! “As our friend Rafiki would say, ‘It is time’,” exclaimed Josh D’Amaro, Disney Experiences Chairman. Guests can follow Simba’s journey from cub to king when the first-ever attraction inspired by Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “The Lion King” debuts at Disney Adventure World in Paris. The new Lion King Land will have you exploring the Price Lands with new areas of dining, shopping, and attractions. There will be characters, and the land will be set at Pride Rock (which looks to be a new log-plume style ride). Potential new ride at ‘Lion King’ Land The second announcement for Disney Adventure World is that a second new land will be joining the Lion King. World of Frozen will be coming to the park in 2026! World of Frozen, a land themed to Walt Disney Animation Studios’ “Frozen” will open alongside the debut of the park’s new name, Disney Adventure World, in 2026. Disney recently opened World of Frozen in Hong Kong Disney, and this new Disneyland Paris land looks like it may be a similar concept. With so many exciting announcements shared during Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase, Disney Imagineers couldn’t miss an opportunity to give our biggest fans a closer look at what we’re working on. This morning, guests attending D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event can visit the show floor to see new additions to the Imagineering: Behind The Dreams pavilion. Here’s a look at some of the most anticipated projects in development. Welcome to Pueblo Esperanza A new adventure awaits at Pueblo Esperanza at Disney’s Animal Kingdom with a new addition themed around Tropical Americas, the area just north and south of the equator in the Western Hemisphere — from the northern part of South America stretching up into Central America. This exciting location gives Imagineers so much to play with when bringing timeless stories to life, like Indiana Jones exploring a recently excavated, ancient Maya temple or magical Casita of the Madrigal family from Walt Disney Animation Studios Oscar award-winning film “Encanto.” Imagineers created a model of Casita, including a magical candle and nods to the home’s vibrant personality with fluttering shutters. To ensure the authenticity of the Tropical Americas, Imagineers conducted numerous research trips, drawing inspiration from various places, including Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula, to authentically reflect the region’s people, architecture, and more. Their efforts are reflected in a stunning model of the land, featuring a large fountain in the center where the villagers like to gather and tell stories. The model even features a special lighting effect around the fountain! Additionally, a woodcarver has created a giant working carousel featuring his favorite animals from Disney stories like Kevin from the Pixar Animation Studios film “Up,” who’s displayed showcasing the woodcarver’s expert craftmanship. It’s a new take on a classic attraction that young families are going to love! First Suspended Coaster in a Disney park During D23 Event 2024, Josh D’Amaro revealed plans to build a Monsters, Inc.-inspired area, including an attraction that lets you take a look inside the factory from the Pixar film. To ideate the layout of the attraction, the project team created a study model of the attraction, enabling them to fine-tune every detail. If you’ve ever dreamed of riding through the door vault, as Sulley and Mike did in the film, this is what you’ve been waiting for! As the first suspended coaster in a Disney park, this attraction will put you right in the middle of the action and have you roaring with laughter. Ideating New “Avatar” Experiences We’re venturing further into Pandora with a new destination at Disney California Adventure. Within the pavilion, Imagineers have created a “working desk” display, showcasing the inspiration and creative tools the project team is using to brainstorm future developments. Bringing the Pride Lands to Disneyland Paris Guests at Disneyland Paris will get to experience the classic Walt Disney Animation Studios film “The Lion King” unlike ever before! Dedicated to the characters and stories from the film, Pride Lands, a new park area in Disney Adventure World will include themed dining, shopping, and the opportunity to meet some favorite characters, along with a new attraction. Imagineers have created a model that beautifully showcases both the area’s development and the new attraction. The level of detail in this model is truly breathtaking! Eagle-eyed fans may notice some familiar markings on rocks throughout the model. These new additions to “Imagineering: Behind the Dreams” are just a glimpse of the work Imagineers are doing! Last week saw an interesting pattern develop, and we need to talk about it. Hollywood Studios Disney World had a bit of a bizzare week, as far as wait times go. Most were generally up at the resort, especially at EPCOT, but the Magic Kingdom saw some bizarre fluctuations. Is this an effect of the new Lighting Lane Multi Pass system? Possibly. We also got new concept art for the ride featuring Spider-Man and Doctor Octopus. The idea for the Marvel area at Hong Kong Disneyland is that Tony Stark has chosen Hong Kong as the Asian headquarters for Stark Industries. It will also become home to the Stark Expo, showcasing all the latest Stark Industries tech. The new ride will star Peter Parker, whose come to the Stark Expo to show off his latest piece of tech. However, this attracts Spider-Man’s archnemesis, Doctor Octopus, who causes some trouble. We’ve got a case of the Disney Treasure on the brain! ©Disney And it makes sense because this brand-new ship coming to the Disney Cruise Line fleet has so many new things for us to experience, like the Aristocats-themed lounge and Haunted Mansion Parlor. We’re just beside ourselves with all the excitement. But before we get too far ahead, and since we’re talking about these lounges and the food they’re going to have there, it got us thinking about another experience that’s unique to the Disney Cruise Line — rotational dining. Let’s talk about it and see if you should skip it or not! First things first, let’s break down what rotational dining is all about. What is Rotational Dining? On the Disney Treasure (and the other ships in the Disney Cruise Line fleet), rotational dining means that each night of your cruise, you’ll rotate through three distinct, themed restaurants. What’s even cooler is that your servers rotate with you, which means you’ll get consistent, personalized service throughout your trip. The rotational dining restaurants on board the Treasure will be Plaza de Coco, Worlds of Marvel, and 1923. ©Disney Pros of Rotational Dining Variety. It Keeps Your Life Spicy! In our opinion, one of the biggest perks of rotational dining is the variety. So, instead of having to stick to one dining spot for the whole cruise, you get to experience three unique environments, each with its own vibe and menu. This means you won’t get bored with having the same dining options for the whole cruise. Consistent Service. Having the same servers each night really can be a game-changer. Disney servers are already amazing but when they’re with you each night, they get to know your preferences, dietary restrictions, and even your kids’ names. As we mentioned earlier, each restaurant has its own vibe which makes it more than just a meal. It’s an experience. If you’re cruising with your little ones, you might find that rotational dining is a hit. It’s time for the third and final day of D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event! D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event On the second day, August 10th, we heard a TON of news at the Horizons — D23 Experiences Showcase about upcoming theme park projects, new nighttime entertainment, new cruise line ships, new gaming, and so much more! Disney World has the best rides, right?! Jungle Cruise And we’re not all just about the brand new rides like Tiana’s Bayou Adventure or TRON Lightcycle / Run. No, even the classics like Peter Pan’s Flight or the Mad Tea Party can still slap. Now that got us thinking about your next trip especially if you’re a true fan of the Jungle Cruise and you’re counting down the days until your next voyage, there’s this one rule that every Cast Member at Jungle Cruise is begging you not to break. Let’s talk about it! What’s that rule at Jungle Cruise in Magic Kingdom that has Disney World Cast Members begging that you don’t break it? Well, actually, we’ve got a couple of them. Let’s dive right in. Don’t Touch the Water First things first, we’ve got to talk about the water. The murky waters of the Amazon (or wherever your skipper claims you are) might look inviting, but trust us, you do NOT want to be dipping your fingers in it. Jungle Cruise It’s not a petting zoo, people! There are might be unseen dangers just beneath the surface. Plus, who knows what kind of germs are floating around in there too? Let’s keep those hands inside the boat, okay? Don’t Block the View Without question, one of the greatest highlights of the Jungle Cruise is the moment you get to see the legendary backside of water. It’s a marvel, a wonder, and it just might bring a tear to your eye kind of moment! But it’s hard to capture if someone’s blocking your view. Jungle Cruise Let’s be considerate of our fellow passengers. Everyone deserves a shot of that glorious H2O magic. So, sit back, relax, and enjoy that watery wonder of the world. Respect the Wildlife Yes, the elephants are cute, and the lions look oh so majestic. But remember, even though they’re made of metal and wires, they deserve our respect. Please, oh please, don’t throw anything at them. Jungle Cruise elephants Those animatronics are pieces of Disney history, and should be treated with care. Plus, do you really want to be the person who damaged a Jungle Cruise lion? We sure don’t! Watch Your Kids Disney World is such a great place for families, and we love that, but let’s be clear that your skippers are not babysitters. We have to keep an eye on our little explorers at all times. Jungle Cruise Skipper This isn’t just for their safety, but for everyone’s enjoyment. The last thing we want is for something to happen to a child (that’s no fun for anyone). So, let’s make sure our kiddos are seated and safe, and let the skippers focus on navigating those “treacherous” waters and delivering their “legendary” punchlines. Don’t Stand Up We get it. This one might seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people forget those three simple words. Don’t. Stand. Up. The Jungle Cruise boats are designed for sitting. Jungle Cruise Standing up on one of them can throw off the balance of the boat and, in the worst-case scenario, you might end up taking an unexpected swim. Fair warning if you’re traveling to Disney World this fall. Magic Kingdom On the surface, September 2024 seems like a great time to visit Walt Disney World. Crowds should be thinner than the busy summer season, and the heat will be much more manageable (though you’ll likely see some rain). Plus both the EPCOT International Food & Wine Festival and Halloween season — including Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party — will be in full swing. However, there’s something you need to know: Some of the parks’ most popular rides will be CLOSED. Some of the attractions on Disney World’s September refurbishment calendar include: The Jungle Cruise The Magic Kingdom’s iconic take on the Disneyland original is closing on August 26th for an indeterminate amount of time. Disney says, “The attraction is scheduled to reopen for Guests before the winter holidays begin at Walt Disney World.” That’s when we should see the ride turn into Jingle Cruise, the decked-out holiday version! Jungle Cruise Test Track One of EPCOT’s most iconic rides has been closed since June 17th. The attraction is going through a massive refurbishment that will see it transformed into what many have dubbed Test Track 3.0. As that nomenclature would imply, the new version of Test Track will be the third incarnation of the ride since its late ’90s opening. According to Disney, this latest redone Test Track the new sets and effects seem to call back to the classic EPCOT attraction World of Motion. While the ride has no official reopening date, we expect the closure will stretch until 2025. Test Track under construction Blizzard Beach As has become the norm at Walt Disney World in recent years, only one of the resort’s two water parks is open at a given time. This September, Typhoon Lagoon will be operating while Blizzard Beach will be shuttered. We’re curious to see if that “one open, one closed” strategy changes in 2025 when the water parks will presumably see a spike in demand when Disney’s new “free water park ticket on the day you arrive” perk for hotel guests goes into effect. Blizzard Beach Water Park September will see several popular attractions closed at Walt Disney World, which is sure to affect guest flow and wait times. Joe Rohde’s remarkable four decades-long career at Walt Disney Imagineering was no small feat. Before his retirement in 2021, Joe’s creative and visionary spirit blazed a trail of inspiring experiences, attractions and even theme parks that have captured the hearts and imaginations of millions around the globe. This year, his work and dedication to The Walt Disney Company will be recognized and celebrated, as he’ll be named a Disney Legend alongside 13 other aspirational individuals at the celebratory ceremony on August 11, as part of D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. Joe’s journey as an Imagineer is a testament to his power of passion, creativity, and storytelling. These guiding principles have influenced each of his projects, bringing a sense of wonder and adventure, and inviting guests to embark on immersive journeys unlike any other. After graduating from Occidental College, Joe went back to teach art, art history and set design for musicals at his old high school, Chaminade College Preparatory. During this time, a Disney executive and parent of one of his students spoke with him about joining Walt Disney Imagineering. He was hesitant at first, but later decided to put together a portfolio of his set design work that eventually got him an entry level job in the model room and later as a scenic painter where he worked on the Mexico pavilion in EPCOT. Not too soon after, he found himself using his eye for design on a variety of projects across Disney parks and experiences domestically including the Norway pavilion in EPCOT and the reimagination of Fantasyland at Disneyland Park. His work on those projects earned him the honor of lead designer for a fourth theme park at Walt Disney World Resort. The park would serve as a lush sanctuary dedicated to the celebration and conservation of Earth’s diverse creatures and ecosystems. Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park opened to the public in 1998 and has become a staple to the resort, educating guests on the beauty of the world’s natural environment and exciting them with thrilling attractions like Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain and Pandora – The World of Avatar. But he wasn’t done yet: Joe’s impact extends far beyond the creation and development of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. He was one of the lead designers for Aulani, A Disney Resort and Spa on O’ahu, Hawai’i and helped design Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission: BREAKOUT! in Disney California Adventure Park at Disneyland Resort. Internationally, Joe even served as the model for Harrison Hightower, the owner of the fictional “Hightower Hotel” at the Tower of Terror attraction at Tokyo DisneySea at Tokyo Disney Resort. Joe has always held an unwavering dedication to conservation and his community and is well renowned for integrating these passions not only across his various projects at The Walt Disney Company but also in other various aspects of his life. For this reason, he was instrumental in the creation of the Disney Conservation Fund, and his efforts have helped to raise over $125 million in grants for projects worldwide. In 2022, only a year after his retirement, he received the Disney Conservation Fund’s first Conservation Legacy Award for all his dedicated work for the environment. In his free time, Joe is still a strategic advisor for both Walt Disney Imagineering and commercial space travel company Virgin Galactic and continues to be inspired by the world around us – here on Earth and in space. Looking at Joe Rohde’s extraordinary journey, he embodies the transformative power of imagination and the enduring legacy of impactful storytelling. The new ride will be “a high-energy thrill coaster” with a Spider-Man theme and will include a “high-speed, fully immersive experience.” Seriously, Disney, you had us at “Spider-Man roller coaster. The coaster will start with a story where Spider-Man “has gotten himself in a bit of a tight spot,” so you’ll have to follow him around at high speeds to help get him out of trouble. We finally have DinoLand, U.S.A. news! DinoLand, U.S.A. Disney had a BUSY night on August 10th at the Disney Experiences Showcase: Horizons at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. We heard HUGE news about Disney parks, cruise ships, and even video games. Disney dropped new nighttime entertainment coming to Magic Kingdom, new lands headed to Magic Kingdom, and, of course, they talked about the re-theming of DinoLand, U.S.A. in Animal Kingdom. Different concepts were suggested, but most recently it was confirmed that the land would focus on the Tropical Americas. Teams of Imagineers have been off on trips studying the biodiversity of these areas to bring the new land to life. However, the Disney stories that would call this new land home had not yet been confirmed, though there was a lot of speculation. Concept art for DinoLand expansion ©Disney However, at the Horizons showcase at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Disney has officially confirmed that DinoLand will become Pueblo Esperanza and will feature Encano and Indiana Jones! The new town Esperanza will be situated in Tropical Americas land coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom. The town features classic Spanish-style architecture in the heart of the rainforest. The new land will feature classic Spanish-style architecture with a large hacienda that will be one of the largest quick-service restaurants at Disney World. There will be the rich and lush color and biodiversity of the Tropical Rainforest and at the center will be a large fountain where stories will be told by gathering villagers. There will even be a new giant carousel sculpted by a local woodcarver. A carousel featuring the resident wood carver’s favorite animals. There will be two signature attractions — an Encanto boat ride through Casa Madrigal and a new Indiana Jones adventure ride! Construction on the new land will begin this fall and the land will open in 2027. Disney assures everyone that there will still be time to ride Dinosaur again and get that dino! The new Tropical Americas land coming to Disney’s Animal Kingdom lets guests explore a preserved Maya temple – and the ensuing adventure – alongside Indiana Jones.
