Are you flying to the Disney Parks soon? We’re here to make sure you’re properly packed and ready to go! Let’s fly! Air travel can be a real pain, but we’re here to help! If you’re flying with carry-on luggage, you’ll be traveling within the TSA parameters so it’s a good idea to plan ahead and grab a few essentials well before you head to the airport! DISCLOSURE: This post may contain affiliate links, meaning when you click the links and make a purchase, we receive a commission. We’ve come up with five items on Amazon that will help you navigate certain carry-on rules while you’re packing for a big Disney trip — let’s take a look! Pick up Compression Travel Cubes to Manage Bag Size Limits Airlines will have carry-on size limits to help manage overhead space as well as space underneath seats. If you consistently have trouble finding a carry-on that fits within these limits, this next item could be PERFECT for you! ©Amazon These BAGSMART Compression Packing Cubes come in sets of 2, 4, and 6 and can be customized in several different colors. These lightweight vacation travel essentials come in different, convenient sizes and are lauded for their durability. Most importantly, they will help you save space as they will squash clothes and minimize the space of your carry-on. Buy on Amazon Manage Vitamins and Pills Easier You are allowed to pack essentials like vitamins and pills in your carry-on, so it’s important to have an organizer that keeps everything together during your vacation. We like packing our medicine and vitamins in our carry on in case our luggage is lost of some reason. ©Amazon The Holii Travel Pill Organizer has eight compartments (six small chambers for small pills and two large chambers for vitamins) and is very portable. This case is very durable and even has an outer lock to prevent the case from opening on its own. Safe, secure, and made of good material that will block moisture and dust, this is a solid thing to pack in your carry-on. Buy on Amazon Prevent Leaks During Your Flight You won’t be able to bring beverages through TSA security, so you will have to fill up after you pass the checkpoint. If you’re worried about water bottle leakage during your flight, this next item has you covered! ©Amazon These Reusable Collapsible Water Bottles with Leakproof Lids are ideal for travel. They don’t take up much space when not in use, are made of BPA-free food-grade silicone, have a screw cap that prevents leakage and splashing, can resist high temperatures, and are excellent companions for air travel and park days! Buy on Amazon Make the TSA Process Easier With This Bag TSA prohibits containers that have more than 3.4 ounces of liquid on carry-on luggage, so there’s a chance you’ll need to pack essentials in your checked luggage. There are also cosmetic bag regulations that you’ll have to consider with your carry-on. This next item definitely helps with both. ©Amazon The BAGSMART Toiletry Bag Hanging Travel Makeup Organizer comes with a TSA-approved transparent cosmetic bag and can accommodate full-sized toiletries. The bag strictly follows TSA regulations, making it easy and quick to pass through airport security and comes in three different sizes. If you’re traveling with prohibited carry-on items, this bag still serves as a great organizer and will still do the job within your checked luggage. Buy on Amazon Meet TSA-Approved Liquid Sizes with These Bottles If you’re set on bringing liquids like shampoo and conditioner with you in your carry-on, this last essential item is a must. ©Amazon These TSA-approved Travel Bottles for Toiletries come in at 3 ounces, just under the TSA limit. The silicone travel-sized bottles come in a 4-pack and are customizable in several different colors. They’re also leakproof and durable, making them amazing travel essentials! Disney is competing pretty hard with Universal Orlando Resort right now, particularly since Epic Universe is on the way. Magic Kingdom However, there are also some things Disney World used to offer that have since gone away, and fans are REALLY hoping they’ll come back. While we’re all looking forward to hearing about the new projects Disney has in progress at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, and we’re interested to hear how they’ll compete with Universal, something else that will help Disney is bringing back some of these past offerings, ESPECIALLY this one! Parades in Disney World are already some of the most popular live entertainment offerings in the park, the most notable right now being the Festival of Fantasy Parade in Magic Kingdom. EPCOT and Animal Kingdom don’t currently have parades, but we have seen parades in all our parks at various times in the past. Ariel in the Festival of Fantasy Parade at Magic Kingdom Magic Kingdom is usually the park to go to for parades, and it’s been that way for many years. As mentioned, you can see the Festival of Fantasy Parade currently, as well as the Adventure Friends Cavalcade in the OG Florida park. But for many years, there were NIGHT parades in Magic Kingdom! Adventure Friends Cavalcade And no, we’re not talking about the seasonal Boo To You and Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmas Parade that take place after dark during Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party and Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. No, there were night parades that ALL guests could experience during regular park hours. Boo-to-You Parade The most notable/well-known of these parades was the iconic Main Street Electrical Parade, which was last seen in this park in 2016. However, SpectroMagic also took place in Magic Kingdom from 1991-1999 and 2001-2010 (in between the Main Street Electrical Parade). Yes, that means it’s been EIGHT. YEARS. since we last had a nighttime parade in Disney World! Main Street Electrical Parade The thing is, Disney hasn’t gotten rid of nighttime parades as a whole — we last saw the Main Street Electrical Parade in Disneyland in 2022, and the Tokyo Disneyland Electrical Parade: DreamLights is still currently happening in Tokyo Disneyland. These were very popular attractions that many Disney fans are missing, so why hasn’t Disney brought them back yet? Main Street Electrical Parade The truth is, Disney hasn’t given us any sort of hint as to why these parades have been extinct for so many years. However, we’re desperately crossing our fingers and hoping that Disney will announce a new nighttime parade is coming at D23! To be honest, we’ve been hoping for some sort of announcement about one for the past eight years, but maybe this will finally be the time! Such a fun parade! Bringing back this popular entertainment option could help give Disney a leg up over Universal Orlando and all they have coming, ESPECIALLY if Universal ends up announcing that a nighttime parade is coming to Epic Universe (which no news about one has been hinted at or revealed). While Disney and Universal are still wildly different from each other, many fans are curious about what Disney will be announcing at D23 to compete with Epic Universe. More D23 News! We have a serious fascination with abandoned areas at Disney World, and another spot has caught our attention! Spaceship Earth at EPCOT When you think about it, Disney World is full of abandoned things from restaurants, to attractions, to hotels. With that list growing larger, it’s hard not to worry about a once popular spot turned practically vacant. Walking around the Disney World parks and hotels every day will get you very acquainted with everything… and we mean everything… there is to see around you. We’re trained to look at it all from the big picture to the smallest details and any change in between. When we started noticing a decline in one particular area of EPCOT, we have to say it started to raise a few alarms for us. Imagination Pavilion If you’ve ever ventured past The Land and up the walkway by the jumping fountains, you’ve probably taken notice of the Disney & Pixar Short Films Festival that plays intermittently just inside the building on the hill. If you’re still scratching your head at where we’re talking about, you can find it just up the stairs as you’re exiting ImageWorks from Journey Into Imagination with Figment. Disney & Pixar Short Film Festival This show is made up of various Pixar shorts that typically play before the feature film they accompany and have grown in popularity to even have their own titles to stream on Disney+. During the show, you’ll sit in a theater to view a handful of shorts that have been crafted together while the theater seats move along to various parts of the film on the screen. This is also the same theater where Captain EO staring Michael Jackson once played in the park. All the shorts During Disney’s 100 Years of Wonder celebration, visitors may have gotten a surprise as they entered the building because both Mickey and Minnie were using the front waiting area as a meet and greet location decked out in their platinum anniversary outfits. While that celebration ran for just a little over a year, the meet and greet with the dynamic duo continued on for several more months while we all waited for their next permanent spot to be completed at the Mickey & Friends area of CommuniCore Hall. Mickey and Minnie meeting in the Imagination Pavilion Since the characters have moved over, the meet and greet spot has sat mostly abandoned, however, we did spot Donald and Daisy meeting there recently just to try it out. Hey, you two! But… other than a chance meet and greet with another great pair of characters and the enjoyable Disney & Pixar shorts, there’s just not much up there in the huge building. Sure, the Pixar shorts to see on the big screen, and we realize not everyone has a subscription to Disney+, but admittedly we could see Disney phasing this version of the attraction out soon thanks to the stream-ability of the same films. To further our argument, we’re even turning our attention to the ImageWorks area of the Imagination pavilion. This serves as the exit for an attraction but with the former character meet and greets with Joy and Vanellope dwindling down to just a meet and greet with Figment… Figment …an almost ghost-town of an area to super impose yourself into Disney themed photos, and a gift shop (it’s a Disney World ride, duh)! ImageWorks gift shop There’s just not a whole lot going on in this area either. We could totally see the upstairs member lounge of Disney Vacation Club look to expand their area into one of these previously mentioned spaces should Disney World decide to do something more immediate with minimal work. DVC Lounge in EPCOT It seems though only time (and possibly attendance) will tell. Who knows — we could get some big news at the upcoming D23 The Ultimate Disney Fan Event that could very well hint at more EPCOT changes in the future. We’re always talking about what’s going on at Disney World so be sure to stay tuned with us at Disney Food Blog for even more Disney news, updates, and changes! Disney4me posted a topic in Disney Blogs
Get ready for a shopping experience like no other! At this year’s D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, Mickey’s of Glendale, the Walt Disney Imagineering store, is gearing up (pun intended) to bring you a treasure trove of collections showcasing the incredible work and talent of Disney Imagineers. From Disney characters to iconic theme park attractions, guests can expect to find unique and creative collections that capture the essence of Disney magic. No Imagineering shopping experience would be complete without an appearance by Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey. This year, the collection includes pieces inspired by the comic book world of Walt Disney’s “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice.” For this collection, Imagineers have infused the whimsy and vibrancy of the classic comic into a dazzling array of modern products. Discover the Imagineer Spotlight Collection One of the highlights is the Imagineer Spotlight collection, featuring designs from seven Imagineers. Inspired by the projects Imagineers have poured their hearts into and their boundless passion for creativity, these pieces are available across a variety of products. Here are a couple of the Imagineers and the art they contributed to the collection: Lead Concept Designer Mike Quinn’s design for the Imagineer Spotlight collection draws inspiration from his recent work on Tokyo DisneySea’s newest themed port, Fantasy Springs. Mike’s work with Walt Disney Imagineering spans the globe and covers a broad spectrum of media design, including visual effects, animation, motion graphics and illustration. “The opportunity to play a part in the creation of Fantasy Springs has been a highlight of my Imagineering journey,” shared Mike. “The enchantment and delight of this captivating new port provide the inspiration for this collection.” For fans of The Muppets, there’s a special treat in store. Producer Dani Iglesias has designed exclusive artwork celebrating the studio’s 70th anniversary, including a stunning tribute to “The Muppet Movie.” A self-described nerd, Dani has known she would work for Disney since she was a kid. Over her 15 years with The Walt Disney Company, she’s worn many hats, from concierge hostess at Disney’s Port Orleans Resort to communications specialist for Disney’s Animal Kingdom. Dani became an Imagineer in 2018, contributing to design strategy for projects like Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and the Society of Explorers and Adventurers. Now, as a producer for The Muppets Studio, Dani leads creative efforts for merchandise illustration, character and brand positioning, and new project development. Mickey’s of Glendale at D23 is a celebration of the creativity and innovation that goes into every Disney project. Whether you’re a lifelong fan or new to the magic, there’s something for everyone. Don’t miss this chance to own a piece of Imagineer-designed merch! Disney Imagineers are always dreaming and doing. Connie Chiume, an actress who appeared in Disney’s Black Panther movies, has passed away. ©Disney According to a family statement, the South African actress, who had a decades-long career, died on Tuesday in a Johannesburg hospital at the age of 72. According to The New York Times, Chiume’s career spanned more than 40 years. She started acting in the last days of apartheid in South Africa, when few Black actors appeared on TV. She went on to have a lengthy career, culminating with a role in Marvel’s Black Panther and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, which finally won her Hollywood recognition. Although her role in those films was a small one, she had stated that this was the recognition she’d dreamed of, appearing with big names like Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, and Angela Bassett. ©Disney Chiume was born as Gabisile Connie Chiume on June 5th, 1952 in Welkom, a mining town in South Africa. She traveled to a nearby province, the Eastern Cape, to finish her high school education and started to train as a nurse. Chiume later switched her training to teaching, which was one of only a few professional options open to Black South Africans during the time. However, Chiume gained a love for the stage, and in 1977, she left South Africa and joined a touring musical group that took her to Israel and Greece. She then joined a well-known South African musical. While living outside of the country, she appeared in a variety of theatrical productions. ©Ron Raffety via Wiki Commons She later returned to South Africa and starred in several TV shows and movies and became a household name in her home country. Ms. Chiume is survived by her three children and five grandchildren. Our hearts go out to her family and friends at this time. It’s a busy week for Disney! Magic Kingdom Monday, August 7th, started with a hurricane, The Walt Disney Company had their Q3 earnings call on August 7th, and D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event is happening on August 9th through August 11th. But even with all that going on throughout the week, the Disney World parks are as busy as ever. However, one park in Disney World had an interesting situation occur in the afternoon of August 7th. On August 7th, Typhoon Lagoon, the water park that is currently operating in Disney World, temporarily stopped admitting new guests due to having some “operational downtimes,” according to Guest Services. Typhoon Lagoon The park remained open but was not allowing anyone else to come in. However, we called again and confirmed with Disney that the park did reopen to all new guests. Parks may temporarily stop letting more people in for several reasons, but usually, we see it happen when the park reaches capacity. We were only told that it closed for “operational downtimes” on August 7th, so we can’t confirm whether it was due to the park reaching capacity or not. Typhoon Lagoon Before you head to any park, it’s good to check the Disney World app or website to confirm operating times for the day. You’ll also see notifications of parks closing early or reaching capacity. Having the Disney World app on your phone is something we recommend anytime you’re heading to the resort for the most up-to-date information. Typhoon Lagoon Entrance Incidents like this one are unpredictable, so keep checking for updates as you plan your trip and when you’re there! Currently, Typhoon Lagoon is the only water park open. Blizzard Beach, Disney World’s other water park, is currently closed for refurbishment. The two water parks open and close opposite each other, but we’re always on the lookout for when Blizzard Beach might open again. Both are available to Disney World hotel guests at 7AM ET 7 days before the beginning of their trip, and are available to all other guests 3 days before the beginning of their trip. And trust us when we say, you’ll want to book as SOON as you can! ©Disney You’re able to make up to 3 selections for both Multi Pass and Single Pass and can lock them in before you purchase so you know what you’re getting, but that doesn’t mean that times won’t still go fast for popular attractions. Wait too long after 7AM, or decide to book closer to your trip, and some of the higher priority rides may already be gone (or their best times may be no longer available). Prioritize Less Popular Rides Your selections are held for 5 minutes when 7AM hits, and that’s fantastic, but it also means that the FIRST one you need to select is the most popular ride on your list. It’s more likely that times for those attractions will fill up first, so get those under a hold ASAP! Introducing NEW Lightning Lane systems! 7AM is a great time to book Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, Jungle Cruise, Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Frozen Ever After, Slinky Dog Dash, or Na’vi River Journey for Lightning Lane Multi Pass as those tend to go more quickly than the other options. ©Disney Buy the WRONG Lightning Lane Option If you’re a Lightning Lane expert, you’re definitely not going to buy the wrong option! When you go to make your Lightning Lane purchase, you’ll be given the choice between buying Lightning Lane Multi Pass or Lightning Lane Single Pass. While the app does a good job of describing which one is which and what you can get out of each one, don’t panic and select something at random! ©Disney It’s also important to note that there is no park hopping option, and that’s because if the park ticket you’ve already purchased allows for park hopping (or you have an Annual Pass), you’ll automatically be able to select return times in another park ONLY WHEN you’ve used up at least ONE of your original selections during the park day. For example, if you select Big Thunder Mountain Railroad as your first selection, your other two pre-selections for Multi Pass MUST be in Magic Kingdom. However, once you redeem one of those three selections in Magic Kingdom, you can choose to make another selection in ANY park. Buy Lightning Lanes Too Often One mistake that you may not think about is buying Lightning Lanes too often! If you’re coming to the parks during a slower season and wait times aren’t too bad, you may not need it for every day of your vacation, and you CAN choose to purchase either for one day or your trip or for the entire thing. Generally, we recommend getting Lightning Lane Multi Pass for Magic Kingdom and Hollywood Studios, but Animal Kingdom and EPCOT can be a bit of a toss-up. If things are looking to be relatively busy, we recommend only grabbing Lightning Lane Single Pass for Animal Kingdom and EPCOT (with heavy emphasis on Animal Kingdom). ©Disney Lightning Lane Multi Pass and Single Pass are incredibly useful for avoiding lines during holiday seasons or summer break, but those random weekdays when there aren’t many visitors? It’s likely you won’t need it, and why spend extra money on your already expensive vacation? However, if waiting in any sort of line is torture to you and you’d rather pay money to skip it all together, then it may be very worth it to keep everyone happy on your trip! Thinking You Don’t “Have” To Be Up at 7AM Since you’re planning in advance, it’s very easy to forget how important that 7AM booking time is! You may fall into the comfort zone, thinking “well, planning a few days in advance is already enough time, right?” WRONG! Don’t fall for this trap! ©Disney Trust us, these will go FAST! If you’re not interested in the larger attractions, yes, you’d probably be fine to book later in the day, but you’re paying so much money to take advantage of this feature, don’t slack on the start time and miss your chance to get the best times! This is especially true if you’re not staying at a Disney World hotel and can only book 3 days in advance. Hotel guests have already had their selections booked for 4 days, so don’t let ANY more time pass you by! Lightning Lanes! We know, we’re all still getting used to this system, so things are still a little confusing, but we’ll continue to update you all as we run tests with this new system, so be sure to stay tuned to DFB! Who’s ready to rock and roll? Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Or should we have a quick lunch first? Yeah, I think that’s best. Rock ‘n’ Roll can wait, but a rumbly in the tumbly cannot! If you’re looking for a quick bite at Hollywood Studios, look no further than KRNR The Rock Station, located right next to Rock ‘n’ Rollercoaster in Hollywood Studios. KRNR The Rock Station This may look like a radio station trailer, but it’s actually home to some fun and quick bites! We strolled over there recently to try some of the menu items available at this snack stand. A meal fit for rock and roll royalty Check out that spread! This may not be the world’s most inventive lineup, but sometimes, that simple theme park food really hits the spot. Let’s hope our meal doesn’t disappoint. Corn Dog Nuggets Yup, Casey’s Corner isn’t the only place where you can get these babies. KRNR has Corn Dog Nuggets on its menu for $10.79. KRNR Corn Dog Nuggets The Corn Dog Nuggets also come with a bag of chips. You have the option of Lays or Nacho Cheese Doritos. Side of chips We also couldn’t help ourselves and got a side of cheese sauce because if you didn’t know already, we are BIG fans of cheese sauce, specifically the iconic plastic cheese served at several Disney quick-service locations. We tend to prefer the kind that is NOT served in a prepackaged cup, but hey — cheese is cheese! KRNR Corn Dog Nuggets The corn dog nuggets taste just like the ones at Casey’s Corner in Magic Kingdom, and because of that, they’re just as yummy. The breading isn’t too crispy, and it’s the perfect ratio of breading to meat. The cheese, however, is where the big difference lies. Say cheeeeese It’s definitely not the same as the Disney plastic cheese we know and love, neither in taste nor texture, but it kept reminding us of something familiar. After several corn dog dips, we realized it was very reminiscent of the cheese that comes with those Nabisco Premium Breadsticks ‘N Cheesy Dip. Not the best, but not the worst. We think we’d rather head over to Backlot Express for a cup of their delicious cheese sauce. Mini Churros Churros are a fan-favorite snack at Disney and you can grab these mini versions at KRNR for $7.79, which also comes served with chocolate sauce. Mini Churros These mini churros were DELICIOUS! Each one was perfectly coated in sugar and cinnamon and was crunchy-churro-goodness in every bite. The chocolate sauce, although dark, wasn’t too rich or bitter, and balanced perfectly with the sweetness of the churro. Yummmmmm These were definite must-get if you’re headed for a quick snack here. Coca-Cola Float A true blue classic, the Coca-Cola Float consists of ice-cold Coca-Cola and creamy vanilla soft serve. Pretty standard when it comes to a typical Coke Float, and we’re sure this will make any fan of floats happy. It’s available for $6.29. Coca-Cola Float The only issue we ran into with this was that it was very HOT outside, so the ice cream melted almost immediately, making this drink feel like soupy ice cream with soda bubbles. Not the best drink choice in our opinion for this heat, but if you love a good float, don’t let that stop you. KRNR menu There are also more items on the KRNR menu, including a Frozen Coke which was the most popular item ordered that day, as well as frozen lemonade, tortilla chips with cheese sauce, and more. The only downside about KRKR is that there is no eating area available or any shaded cover for that matter, so it’s more of a good spot to head to if you’re looking for a small bite to eat on the go. Stay tuned as we bring you even more Disney food reviews! REVIEW: There Is Something Fishy About This NEW Disney Snack Join the DFB Newsletter to get all the breaking news right in your inbox! Disney World is the most magical place on earth. But, even magic has mishaps sometimes (ask almost every Disney character that has made a wish in their movie). Magic Kingdom Nonetheless, the show must go on, and if there’s one thing Disney does best, it’s making sure they do whatever they can to do so. But how do they keep the curtains from closing? Well my little friend, let me introduce you to a little something called ‘B-Mode’. A great way of understanding B-mode is thinking of it like an understudy. An understudy steps in when the main actor of a show steps down for whatever reason, and this is exactly what B-mode does when the main A-mode element has an off day (because even animatronics or special effects need their days off too). If you’re not sure if you’ve ever spotted B-mode in action, we got you covered with a few of the most iconic and common ones you can spot. Rise of the Resistance in Hollywood Studios Rise of the Resistance is no stranger to “technical difficulties.” This popular ride has had issues since its opening in 2019 due to its highly complex system, making downtimes very common. Because of this, however, Disney has created an alternative element in case one of their “stars” has some difficulties working correctly (Pfft, diva much?). Rise of the Resistance During one scene of the attraction, Kylo Ren (in awesome animatronic form ) appears and threatens to use the Force against riders when an explosion opens a hole in the hull, stopping him from doing so. Unfortunately, it is common for this animatronic to have issues, so Disney Imagineers have created an alternative ending to the story, taking riders over to the windows of the ship where they will view Kylo Ren inside of his TIE Fighter instead. This eliminates the use of the animatronic in general, making the scene entirely powered by a projection screen. This change isn’t entirely too bad and can still be pretty cool, but we do miss getting to see the Kylo Ren animatronic in action whenever B-mode is in use. Rise of the Resistance Na’vi River Journey in Animal Kingdom The Na’vi Shaman is one of the most impressive animatronics Disney Imagineering has ever created and has reportedly cost Disney $23 million to make. It’s definitely a huge draw for those wanting to ride Na’vi River Journey, but sadly, you might not even get to see it if B-mode is in place. Na’vi River Journey When the Na’vi Shaman is malfunctioning, a screen is put in place to project a CGI version of the Shaman, making it feel a little anti-climactic. This version of the attraction is truly the one that breaks our hearts the most since that animatronic is so incredible in person and is the star of the attraction. But, with advanced technology comes advanced technological problems, and the show must go on one way or another. Expedition Everest in Animal Kingdom Now, this one is very different than the rest of the B-Modes we mentioned because Expedition Everest is ALWAYS in B-Mode. Yup, it’s pretty permanent folks. Expedition Everest The shining star of this attraction is none other than the Yeti, who the story strongly revolves around. When entering Mount Everest, riders encounter a MASSIVE Yeti animatronic that would swipe at the vehicle, scaring and impressing riders all at once. And, by massive, I mean this Animatronic cost about $100 million to make (the gasp I just gusped when I found that out). It’s beautiful and intricate, and HUGE…and that’s just the issue. The Yeti! Unfortunately, Disney realized that the animatronic was causing damage to the structure of the mountain, so it has been placed in perpetual B-Mode for a few years now. This B-Mode consists of the Yeti staying fixed in place, with the illusion of it moving towards the vehicle thanks to the use of strobe lighting. Because of this, fans of Expedition Everest have named this version of the attraction ‘Disco Yet’, which we think is very fitting and fun. This is a version of the attraction that some of us are only familiar with, so the loss isn’t huge, but we definitely wish we could have seen the Yeti in full action. B-Mode can be a bit disappointing when you’re headed to an attraction you’re really excited about, but it allows everyone to ride attractions that would otherwise be down for days without these creative alternatives. Stay tuned as we bring you all the latest in Disney news, tips, and updates! Fan favorite attraction Pirates of the Caribbean first opened to the public on March 18, 1967, at Disneyland Resort, and it quickly became one of the most iconic and beloved attractions at Disney parks worldwide. It’s inspired experiences at Disney parks around the world, and spawned a successful movie franchise that ended up shaping the modern-day attractions guests experience today. In fact, more pirate stories are yet to be told with the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean-themed lounge coming soon to Magic Kingdom Park at Walt Disney World Resort. D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event is right around the corner and our teams are busy gearing up for Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase on Aug. 10. Ahead of all the new and exciting announcements at this year’s show, we’re commemorating and celebrating where we started with historical deep dives into some of our favorite classic attractions. Join me to learn about the unique and storied history – from Disney parks to the big screen – of everyone’s favorite rapscallions, the Pirates of the Caribbean. The attraction traces back to Walt Disney himself as it was one of the last attractions he oversaw the development of. The concept for the experience was originally envisioned as a walkthrough wax museum dedicated to eighteenth century pirate history, to be placed in New Orleans Square near a planned “Thieves Market” shopping district in Disneyland park. However, with advancements in technology and the success of Disney’s first Audio-Animatronics figures, the concept evolved into a boat ride, an iteration of the ride system originally created for “it’s a small world,” filled with lifelike, moving pirates, detailed sets, and captivating storytelling. Pirates of the Caribbean immerses guests in a swashbuckling adventure, starting out in a peaceful bayou scene and escalating into an escapade through pirate-laden waters. The attraction features exciting cannon battles, treasure-filled caves, and of course, scenes of plundering and revelry. The attraction’s catchy and recognizable theme song, “Yo Ho (A Pirate’s Life for Me),” composed by Disney Legend George Bruns with lyrics by Disney Legend Xavier “X” Atencio (who you might remember from our Haunted Mansion historical blog), also adds to its charm and enduring popularity. With the attraction’s rising popularity and demand at Disneyland, other Disney parks began to bring the beloved pirates to their guests. Walt Disney World added its own attraction in Adventureland in 1973, and at Tokyo Disney Resort a near identical version of the original beloved voyage. Over in Europe, Disneyland Paris offered a unique twist on the classic attraction. Located in Adventureland, their Pirates of the Caribbean attraction opened in 1992 with a different layout and all-new scenes. Notable for its impressive exterior design resembling an old fort, guests love the different storyline about the pirates’ quest for treasure. Most recently, 2016 saw the opening of Pirates of the Caribbean: Battle for the Sunken Treasure in Shanghai Disneyland. A reimagining of the fan-favorite attraction, this version features large-scale screens and is closely linked to the film series. Speaking of the films, the immense popularity and rich storytelling of the Disney parks attractions eventually inspired the feature film franchise. Directed by Gore Verbinski and starring Disney Legend Johnny Depp, the 2003 film, “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl” drew inspiration from the attractions and introduced fans to all-new characters, like Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Barbossa. This first film proved to be a major success and created a dedicated fan base. Furthermore, Johnny Depp’s portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow became so iconic that he earned his first Academy Award ® nomination in 2004, cementing the character as a pop culture mainstay. “The Curse of the Black Pearl” became so popular that four subsequent films, including “Dead Man’s Chest,” “At World’s End,” “On Stranger Tides” and “Dead Men Tell No Tales,” followed over the next 15 years. As the franchise grew in popularity, Disneyland and Magic Kingdom began to infuse characters and scenes from the “Pirates of the Caribbean” films into their parks. Audio-Animatronics figures of film characters like Captain Jack Sparrow and Captain Barbossa were added to the attractions and the character Jack Sparrow started greeting guests around the parks. The character has also made appearances in select shows over the years like The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow at Walt Disney World Resort and Fantasmic! at Disneyland Resort. Currently, he also appears in Eye of the Storm: Captain Jack’s Stunt Spectacular at Shanghai Disney Resort. Guests continue to have new avenues to interact with their favorite buccaneers including a new Pirates-themed lounge opening at Magic Kingdom as well as Sparrow’s arrival into the popular online Epic game, Fortnite, earlier this year. The attraction’s evolution over the years has contributed to its lasting success and popularity for fans and guests. The integration of elements from the film series has introduced movie fans to the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction and the film’s inspirations, all while keeping the experience fresh and relevant for long-time parks guests. Pirates of the Caribbean continues to stand as a testament to the power of immersive storytelling and Walt Disney’s creative vision for Disneyland that’s permeated and influenced Disney parks around the world. From its origins as a groundbreaking attraction to its development into a beloved film franchise and back again, it continues to captivate and inspire audiences around the world. Whether through the captivating park experiences or the adventures on the silver screen, it’s a pirate life for all of us. Check out our other deep dives into Country Bear Jamboree, “it’s a small world,” and Haunted Mansion. Keep up with us on the Disney Parks Blog and social channels during Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase, as part of D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, as we share all the exciting new updates coming out of the show! EVERYone loves Gideon’s cookies! Gideon’s The rich, famous, and influential – – from politicians and royalty to rock stars and Hollywood icons – – have been visiting Disney’s theme parks since Disneyland opened back in 1955. However, it’s admittedly not that often we see one of the most famous faces in the country chow down on one of the resort’s trademark desserts for all to see. Recently, Ryan Seacrest – – he of massive pop cultural fame – – took to his Instagram account with a clip of himself enjoying a decadent Gideon’s chocolate chip cookie. Set to the smash hit pop song “Espresso” by (ironically enough, former Disney star) Sabrina Carpenter, the clip shows Seacrest unwrapping and eating one of the bakehouse’s cookies, including dunking the final bite in a large glass of milk. The clip was accompanied by a caption which read, “POV: I’m comfort eating because summer is going by too quickly. Happy #NationalChocolateChipCookieDay ” Ryan Seacrest Instagram Seacrest is no stranger to being in the public eye. Among his many credits are hosting duties on American Idol, American Top 40, and On Air With Ryan Seacrest. In addition, the affable host has carved out a bit of a niche for himself by filling the shoes of entertainment legends. He’s been the host of Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve since the Clark’s death in 2012, and was the longest-running replacement for the late Regis Philbin on the long-running show the latter had hosted with Kelly Ripa (Live with Kelly and Ryan lasted from 2017 to 2023). In September 2024 he’ll be taking over Wheel of Fortune after the retirement of longtime host Pat Sajak. Ryan Seacrest Instagram Gideon’s Bakehouse, the local Orlando-area business, opened up its Disney Springs location in January of 2021. The bakery is well-known for is well known for their “ingredient rich, from-scratch “almost half-pound” cookies.” The massive sweet treats take almost a day to create and have quickly become one of the best-regarded desserts at Walt Disney World. ©Gideon’s Stay tuned to DFB for further Disney World celebrity sightings! Did you know that you could stay at a Disney beach resort just two hours outside of Disney World? Disney’s Vero Beach Resort Disney’s Vero Beach Resort is a hidden gem on Florida’s Treasure Coast. While it might not be located at the main Disney World Resort, it has plenty of Disney touches throughout and even serves some iconic Disney park food! At the Wind and Waves Market, you can find Mickey Pretzels, churros, Mickey Premium Bars, and even Dole Whip! You can even purchase the iconic Refillable Mug here! Now, we know that sometimes we say that the Refillable Mug is not worth it when you are staying at Disney World. At both Disney World and Vero Beach, you can purchase a Refillable Mug, also known as a Rapid Fill Mug, for $21.99. This mug grants you unlimited soda, tea, and coffee refills. Rapid Fill Buying a Refillable Mug while staying at Disney World does have its cons. The mugs can only be refilled at the resorts and not in the parks. You can fill your mug at any resort, even if you are not staying at the resort, but as we said, parks are a no-go for mug refills. Refillable Mug at Vero Beach If you want to refill your mug before heading into the parks, you can totally do so, but then you can be stuck carrying the mug throughout the day, and once you are finished with your drink, you will most likely have to wait to wash it out until you get back to your resort. Refillable Mug Depending on the resort you stay in, there may only be one refill station, and it may be far from your room. Resorts like the All-Stars and Old Key West are very spread out, and you may not get use out of your mug if you do not want to have to walk back and forth to refill it. Old Key West At Disney World, the mug is good for your length of stay up to 14 days. But at Vero Beach, your mug is good for much longer! Refillable Mugs at Wind and Waves Market As mentioned before, a Refillable Mug at Vero Beach is the same price as one at Disney World: $21.99. At Vero Beach, your mug is good for your entire stay, even if it is longer than 14 days! Refilling at Vero Beach We purchased our mug on July 31st, and when we used it for the first time, the soda machine said that we could enjoy free refills until August 28th. If, for some reason, your trip is longer than the allotted time, Cast Members at Wind and Waves Market can adjust it, as per a Cast Member we talked to on our most recent visit. You can enjoy free refills longer! If you are headed to Disney World after your trip to Vero Beach, your mug is also good to use at the resorts around Disney World. The exception to this is that the mug would follow the 14-day rule from when you purchased it. In our case, our mug would expire 14 days after July 31st. You can use your mug at Disney World too! It is also much more convenient to fill your mug at Vero Beach than at some Disney World resorts. There is only one refill station located inside the Wind and Waves Market, but the Market is in a very convenient location. Wind and Waves Market Most of the action that takes place at Vero Beach happens around the pool and beach, and Wind and Waves Market is located right in between. The Market is also close to Eb and Flo’s rentals, Portholes Mini Golf, and the main lobby, making it the perfect refill location. Vero Beach Pool It is easy to refill your mug before heading to the beach and to go back to the Market to get your refill in the middle of the day. You can really get your money’s worth when purchasing a Refillable Mug at Vero Beach. The mug lasts longer, is in a great location, and you can even keep it as a souvenir! Refillable Mug at Vero Beach We do not always recommend getting a Refillable Mug when you stay at a resort located at Disney World, but we 100% recommend getting it if you stay at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort! Check Out this Disney World Refillable Mug Hack! Join the DFB Newsletter to get all the breaking news right in your inbox! Click here to Subscribe! WE KNOW DISNEY. YOU CAN, TOO.
