During the 1990s, the Disney Channel assembled an in-retrospect monumental group of talent to star in a reboot of The Mickey Mouse Club, including Ryan Gosling, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake, JC Chasez, and – – our subject today – – Keri Russell. The Golden Globe-winning actress recently appeared on the Smartless podcast (as told by Newsweek) and had some interesting things to say about her time working for the House of Mouse.

Russell, who was 15 when she appeared on the 4th, 5th, and 6th seasons of the Mickey Mouse Club, commented that there was a double standard to how Disney treated male vs female actors. She commented, “This seriously is the truth: Whenever the girls looked like they were having sex, they were like, ‘Uh get that one out of here,’ and the boys stayed until they were, like, 25. They were like, ‘Uh, that one, she’s out.’” She jokingly added, ”She looks like a breeder, get her out.”

Despite those comments, Russell did speak positively of her time at Disney, saying it was “so fun. I mean, it was so cheesy looking back, but it was so fun.”

This isn’t the first time Russell has spoken in these terms about her Disney career. Earlier this year, she told actor Jesse Tyler Ferguson (on his Dinner’s on Me podcast), “Yeah, it’s usually, like, girls who looked like they were sexually active, Which, probably, I was one of the first. They were like, ‘She is out!’ Meanwhile, the boys stayed till they were like 19… I was like, ‘By the way, I had sex with that person, so I know that they’ve had sex.’ For real.” However, in the same interview Russell credited her time on The Mickey Mouse Club with helping her avoid the issues that usually plague child actors. “I think what’s really the creepiest part of kid acting is usually it’s one or two kids with all adults. So that really accelerates the adultification of everything. And for The Mickey Mouse Club, there were 19 of us. The adults were invisible to me, so I wasn’t completely alone with all the adults, and I think that was helpful.”

Following her time with Disney, Russell has had a long career, winning her aforementioned Golden Globe thanks to her titular role on the series Felicity as well as starring on the critically acclaimed seres The Americans.
