The New Problem That’s Suddenly Plaguing Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party in Magic Kingdom

It’s officially that time of year — Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party (MVMCP) has kicked off in Magic Kingdom!

This is really the main event where we ring in the holiday season and start celebrating all things holly and jolly. With Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade, complimentary cookies and cocoa, rare character meets, and more exclusive offerings, this party is usually a festive blast! But there’s one problem we’ve been noticing the past few years that we need to talk about.

Like many other offerings, the price of Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party has continued to increase over the years. Last year, tickets ranged from $159 to $199 — depending on which night you chose to go. This year, those ticket prices have jumped up quite a bit, with a range from $169 to $219 per person.

Let’s go to a Christmas Party!

Now, we wouldn’t mind the price increase so much if MVMCP was changing in new and exciting ways each year, but that’s not really the case. For the most part, the party has stayed relatively the same the past few years — the same entertainment offerings each year, mostly the same character meet and greets, and even the same ride overlays.

Some little things get modified from year to year, like the exclusive snacks available and the selection of merchandise, but that’s about it. In fact, some offerings have even DIMINISHED in recent years, like the cookie and beverage situation. If you compare the offerings from a few years ago (like pre-pandemic), there were more unique flavors of complimentary cookies to find around the park during the party, as well as more matching beverage options. Now, we’re mostly down to pretty basic cookie flavors along with hot cocoa and apple cider.

As much as we love the exclusive entertainment at the party, Disney hasn’t offered much “enhancement” there to go with the price changes either. Mickey’s Once Upon a Christmastime Parade is still the same, as is Minnie’s Wonderful Christmastime Fireworks and Mickey’s Most Merriest Celebration. After 2019, we also, unfortunately, lost the beloved Cinderella Castle Dream Lights during the holiday season — they’ve now been replaced with projections that are holiday-themed.

So what would Disney need to do to rectify this situation? Well, we’ve got a few ideas. It could start as simple as swapping out some of the character meet and greets during the party. Introduce more rare characters that we don’t often get to see to make the party feel more exclusive. Also, adding Christmas lighting and music to a few more rides during the party and labeling it an “overlay” wouldn’t hurt.

We’d love to see some new characters or floats in the Christmas parade as well, and adding in a few smaller entertainment options around the park would be nice. Just little touches that make the party ticket feel a smidge more valuable would be quite welcome.

If Disney made some of these upgrades, it would also probably help disperse crowds a little better. In the past few years, the party has felt particularly crowded and it has been difficult to navigate. Spreading out the crowds is a great strategy for making that party ticket worth the cost.

We’re heading to the first event of 2024 and will be sure to update you about the crowd levels this year. So far it was a very smooth process getting our wristbands and scanning in.
