Disney4me
If you’re preparing to fly this summer, listen up! A major change is coming to the ID requirements to fly, and it could affect your trip negatively if you’re not prepared! ©JetBlue Beginning on May 7th, 2025, anyone flying in the United States will need to provide a REAL ID as part of the check-in process before boarding their flight. REAL IDs are state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards that meet the federal REAL ID security standards. According to the Department of Homeland Security, the REAL ID law was enacted based on recommendations from the 9/11 Commission that the government “set standards for the issuance of sources of identification, such as driver’s licenses.” The Act established “minimum security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards and prohibits certain federal agencies from accepting for official purposes licenses and identification cards from states that do not meet these standards.” Security lines! These purposes include accessing certain federal facilities, entering nuclear power plants, and (most importantly for us today) boarding federally regulated commercial aircraft. Currently, all 50 states, as well as Washington D.C. and the 5 U.S. territories, are offering REAL ID-compliant cards. Once again, according to Homeland Security, to acquire a REAL ID, you should “Visit your state’s driver’s licensing agency website to find out exactly what documentation is required to obtain a REAL ID. At a minimum, you must provide documentation showing: Full Legal Name Date of Birth Social Security Number Two Proofs of Address of Principal Residence Lawful Status Furthermore, the agency specifies that “states may impose additional requirements, so check with your state’s driver’s licensing agency website before visiting them in person, for additional guidance and assistance.” ©Department of Homeland Security If you don’t have a REAL ID, there are alternative approved methods of identification that can be used including: U.S. passport U.S. passport card DHS trusted traveler cards (Global Entry, NEXUS, SENTRI, FAST) U.S. Department of Defense ID, including IDs issued to dependents Permanent resident card Border crossing card An acceptable photo ID issued by a federally recognized Tribal Nation/Indian Tribe, including Enhanced Tribal Cards (ETCs). HSPD-12 PIV card Foreign government-issued passport Canadian provincial driver’s license or Indian and Northern Affairs Canada card Transportation worker identification credential U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Employment Authorization Card (I-766) U.S. Merchant Mariner Credential Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) Residents who live in Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Vermont, and Washington who have State-Issued Enhanced Driver’s Licenses and identification cards (EDL/EID) which are designated as “acceptable border-crossing documents by DHS under the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative” can use those as an acceptable alternative to a REAL ID for boarding a commercial aircraft. However, travelers over the age of 18 who do not present a REAL ID-compliant license or any of those acceptable alternatives will “not be permitted through the security checkpoint” beginning on May 7th. Minors are not required to provide identification when traveling with a companion within the United States.
