Disney4me
Magic Kingdom’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is closed throughout the year, and it’s got us thinking, “Why so long?” Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Disney World is no stranger to working on projects and refurbishments for a long period of time. Often, it can take years after a project announcement until we FINALLY see the finished project. In the case of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad’s year-long closure, we might have an idea as to why the ride needs to be closed for a year. Initially labeled as Beyond Big Thunder Mountain, Villains Land is supposed to be constructed in close proximity to the “wildest ride in the wilderness.” Many speculate that the year-long closure could be a direct result of the upcoming Villains Land construction. While that’s certainly possible, history has shown us there might be another reason as to why the ride won’t be available for at least a year. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad When comparing Big Thunder Mountain at Disneyland and Magic Kingdom, many would say that Disneyland’s version has the slight advantage. That ride in Anaheim has a more updated track, as well as fun pyrotechnic effects on the third lift hill. Disneyland’s version of the ride featured these upgrades beginning in March 2014, but they didn’t come without a significant closure. Big Thunder Mountain at Disneyland In order to install new effects, a new track, new scenery, new ride vehicles, and an upgraded ride experience, Big Thunder Mountain at Disneyland was closed from January 2013 into March 2014. A lengthy refurbishment that lasted over a year — sound familiar? Big Thunder Mountain Construction We’ve already seen track removed at Magic Kingdom’s Big Thunder Mountain, and the timeline fitting coincidentally alongside the big refurbishment of the Disneyland attraction is yet another tip that Magic Kingdom could be using this year-long closure to make sure the Disney World Big Thunder Mountain Railroad catches up to (or even surpasses) the updated experience of the Disneyland ride. Construction Disneyland’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is an incredible experience, and the ride is arguably better than ever, thanks to its lengthy refurbishment. If Magic Kingdom’s Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is undergoing the same changes, then this time-consuming closure will be worth it. Sure, we shed a tear because we are unable to ride this amazing attraction every visit, but if it means we get a superior version of the ride, then it’s an easier pill to swallow.
