In 2.5 Months, Flying on Southwest Airlines Will Be Totally Different

Recommended Posts

It’s been quite a year for change. Disney World is going through a ton of changes, with whole theme park lands going away, new lands arriving, new shows, and so much more.

Orlando International Airport is even changing! The airport announced it is getting new restaurants, continuing its expansion of Terminal C, improving parking, and more. One of our favorite airlines, though, is also undergoing some BIG changes, and in just over two months, EVERYTHING will be totally different if you’re flying on Southwest. So let’s talk about it.

Disney Vacation Planner

Yes, change is in the air (see what we did there?) for Southwest Airlines passengers. That’s because Southwest’s decades-old “Bags Fly Free” policy is officially going away. Southwest Airlines has announced that only select passengers will get free checked bags after May 28th, 2025. Gone are the days of two free checked bags for everyone, people.

When this new change goes into effect, only Rapid Rewards A-List Preferred members and passengers who have paid for Business Select fares will receive two free checked bags. A-List members and other select passengers will receive one free checked bag. Southwest will also allow one checked bag for Rapid Rewards Credit Cardmembers.

Everyone else, though, will have to pay up. Now, we don’t know what checked bags might cost when Southwest makes these changes, although most of the larger carriers charge around $40 per bag each way.

In a press release, Southwest stated that it aims to “deepen and reward loyalty between Southwest and its most engaged Customers” and “create new opportunities to reach consumers who value fare above everything else.”

This is just one of many changes the airline has recently announced. The airline will also be getting rid of its open seating policy and switch to assigned seating, including offering premium seating with more legroom. Rapid Rewards members will also notice changes to how rewards are earned: they’ll earn more when booking Business Select fares while earning less when booking other fares.

Stay tuned to DFB for more.
