Disney4me
Hold on to your Mickey ears, because there are some BIG roller coaster changes are coming to Disney World! Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Disney has officially confirmed major updates to three coasters across the parks, and these changes are going to shake things up in a BIG way. From a brand-new Monsters, Inc. ride to a total reimagining of Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, and even some major updates to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, there’s a lot to be excited about. Let’s get into the details! The Monsters, Inc. Suspended Coaster Is Coming to Hollywood Studios Ever since Disney announced the new Monsters, Inc. land at D23, we’ve been eagerly waiting for details about the land’s flagship ride. And now, we’ve got them! D23 The all-new Monstropolis area will feature Disney’s first-ever suspended coaster. Remember how in Monsters, Inc. the doors are grabbed by giant claws and carried through the factory? Well, imagine hopping onto one of those doors and zipping around Monstropolis yourself—because that’s exactly what Disney is making happen! ©Disney In a new sneak peek video, Disney showed off renderings of the ride, revealing how the coaster will literally lift off the ground, eliminating the need for a traditional vertical lift hill. This means a smoother, more immersive ride experience that’s totally different from anything else Disney has done before. ©Disney We’ve been waiting for over 20 years for this ride to become a reality, and it’s finally happening. We can’t wait to step into the factory and experience Monstropolis firsthand! Big Thunder Mountain Railroad Is Getting a HUGE Overhaul If you’ve visited Magic Kingdom recently, you might’ve noticed that Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is closed. And unfortunately, it’s going to stay that way for a while—at least until 2026. But when it reopens, it’ll be a whole new ride. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is currently closed Disney has confirmed that Big Thunder is getting “a little bit of new magic,” which likely means some serious upgrades. We already know the track is being completely replaced, which means a smoother ride. Disney even filed a permit with a steel company that specializes in coaster construction, hinting at some big structural changes. Track work Beyond the track, we’re also expecting new effects. If you’ve been on Disneyland’s version of Big Thunder, you’ve seen the amazing projection effects in the final lift hill scene. Could those be coming to Disney World? We sure hope so! Big Thunder Mountain at Disneyland But the biggest change might not even be on the ride itself—it’s what you’ll see from it. Frontierland is transforming, with the Cars-themed area replacing Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island, and a brand-new Villains land going in behind Big Thunder. That means when you ride the coaster, you might get a sneak peek at these new lands. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster Is Saying Goodbye to Aerosmith It’s official: Aerosmith is out, and the Muppets are moving in! Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster is being completely reimagined with a Muppets theme, and while we don’t have all the details yet, we do know it’s going to be a rockin’ good time. ©Disney Disney just filed a permit to repaint the massive guitar outside the attraction, which could hint at a new color scheme or design. Concept art suggests that the super-stretch limo could also get a new paint job to fit the Muppets theme. Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster As for the ride itself, Disney has promised new music, new characters, and a brand-new storyline. The Muppets will be teaming up with some of “music’s biggest stars” for a high-energy rock festival, which sounds like the kind of chaotic fun only the Muppets can bring. ©Disney And yes, you can bet there will be plenty of Muppets-themed merch! The Rock Around the Shop gift shop is expected to get a full makeover, so get ready for some new Kermit and Miss Piggy gear. Bonus: A Villains Coaster Might Be Coming to Magic Kingdom While Disney hasn’t officially announced a Villains coaster, they have confirmed that Villains Land is in the works for Magic Kingdom. And looking at the concept art, it sure looks like there might be not one, but TWO roller coasters in this land. Villains Land Concept Art ©Disney One section of the art shows a track winding through a cavern-like space, while another section features a thorn-covered ride track that looks like it could belong to Maleficent. ©Disney Could these be two separate coasters? It’s definitely possible. Either way, Villains Land is shaping up to be one of the most exciting additions to Magic Kingdom in years. ©Disney Disney is going all in on coaster updates, and we’re here for it. Between the Monsters, Inc. suspended coaster, a smoother and upgraded Big Thunder Mountain, and the Muppets takeover at Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, there’s a lot to look forward to. And if the rumors about a Villains coaster turn out to be true, things are about to get even more exciting. In the meantime, stay tuned to DFB for all the latest from Disney.
