Val Kilmer, an actor known for a range of notable roles, from Iceman in Top Gun to Doc Holliday in Tombstone, has passed away at 65.

Kilmer died on April 1st in Los Angeles, California, according to The New York Times. After recovering from throat cancer and two tracheotomies, Kilmer passed away from pneumonia.

Val Kilmer was born in Los Angeles on December 31st, 1959. His younger brother, Wesley, died in 1977 after drowning in a swimming pool. Kilmer was 18 at the time.

Kilmer’s acting career started in 1984’s Top Secret! movie, later working on films like MacGruber and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. In 1993, Kilmer earned a starring role in Tombstone and went on to play in films like True Romance and Heat.

Kilmer attended Juilliard School as one of the youngest actors ever accepted at the time and believed in the Method branch of Suzuki arts training. The actor was dedicated to his performances and believed in art over marketing and commerce.

Kilmer also played one of the most iconic superhero characters of all time, Batman, in the 1995 film Batman Forever. The actor even took a role in a Disney animated film, Planes, as the voice of Bravo.

Kilmer was nominated for a Grammy in 2012 for a spoken word album called The Mark of Zorro. He also published two poetry books, including My Edens After Burns and Cowboy Poet Outlaw Madman: Selected Poems by Val Kilmer. The actor married and divorced actress Joanne Whalley. He is survived by their two children, Mercedes and Jack.
