Explaining The One Big Problem You Might Have With ‘Harry Potter’ Land in Epic Universe

Recommended Posts

Well, we’ve finally checked out Epic Universe…and, well, all we have to say is that it lives up to its “Epic” name. We spent so much time in Epic Universe with our jaws on the floor, y’all…you have no idea.

We still can’t get over how it felt like stepping into the movie when we visited How To Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk or what it felt like meeting Toothless IN THE FLESH. We also loved the darker vibes of Dark Universe and still can’t get over all the amazing details in Monsters Unchained. We almost cried stepping into The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic, especially after riding Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, but there was one thing that bugged us about this land…let’s talk about it.

So here’s the deal. The actual land part of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic is set in 1920s Paris around the time of the Fantastic Beasts movies. But the ride, Harry Potter and the Battle at the Ministry, is set in the modern day, or at least during the time of the Harry Potter movies. So this has caused a lot of confusion because there’s a disconnect between these two time periods — how exactly can you be in both the 1920s and modern day?

Well, believe it or not, Universal kinda knew what it was doing when it set the land up this way. The portal into the land has a time turner attached to it, so when you walk through, you’re going from the modern day into 1920s Paris. Okay, that totally makes sense. You can see the time turner at the top of the portal. Nice detail there, Universal.

BUT Universal doesn’t really explain much about how you go from 1920s Paris back TO the modern day on the ride. Although, we think maybe the Floo transportation system is somehow also connected to a time portal or time turner? And somehow, when you walk out of the ride, you’re also somehow time-traveling back to the 1920s. But the idea of the land is that time is wonky there, and time magic is kinda just doing some chaotic things. So the answer is TIME MAGIC.

So, basically, it’s a lot like Doctor Who. It’s wibbly wobbly timey wimey.

The best we can guess, although it’s not explicitly stated, is that this land is full of time turners. It’s not like we can get judgy, considering that Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disney World and Disneyland take place during the sequel movies, but you have characters from well before that timeline roaming around like The Mandalorian (and Luke Skywalker and a ton of other characters from other timelines in Disneyland).

But yes, if you find yourself wondering how it all works when you visit The Wizarding World of Harry Potter — Ministry of Magic, the answer is “time magic.” We’ll just leave it at that.
