Disney4me
Big things are happening at the Disneyland Resort and we’re here to break it all down. Disneyland DisneylandForward — a project whereby Disneyland will work with the City of Anaheim to rezone specific parts of the Disneyland Resort to accommodate new lands, attractions, and experiences — was OFFICIALLY approved in May 2024. This nearly $2 billion plan will transform Disneyland over the next decade, and we’re going to run down what those changes could look like. Disneyland now has the flexibility to use its own land for what it wants to do and, while there’s still so much Disney is keeping close to the vest, there are a few projects Disneyland has teased. ©Disney The current “DisneylandForward conceptual development plan stays within Disney’s existing 500-acre property in Anaheim with no physical expansion or additional acreage.” Before the new plan was approved, the previous plans approved in the 1990s designated areas such as “hotel” and “entertainment”. Now, the Resort will be switching to “mixed-use” flexibility — meaning the physical space that Disney already owns will be molded to their liking. Disney intends to use the privately funded $1.9 billion over the next decade to expand the area’s lodging, retail, parking, dining options, and theme parks. The plan would ultimately be in effect for 40 years in an effort to create a unified entertainment center. ©Disney DisneylandForward will be a 40-year-long project, meaning learning new information will be a slow burn. We do know, however, that the Resort wants to build new parking and a brand-new transportation center. We also know that the plan includes benefits for the residents of Anaheim such as $30 million for affordable housing, $8 million for parks, $85 million in traffic improvements and pedestrian safety, and continued investment in workforce development programs. ©City of Anaheim New lands and attractions have already been teased at Disneyland Park and Disney California Adventure. While nothing has been set in stone, Disney has brought up ideas of lands based on Coco, Black Panther, Tangled, Frozen, Zootopia, Peter Pan, Tron, and Toy Story. Some of these lands make a great amount of sense, as they’ve already been built at other Disney theme parks around the world. Toy Story Land In January 2024 at an Anaheim City Council meeting, developers referenced other possible lands that could come to Disneyland, such as Zootopia Land at Shanghai Disney Resort, Rapunzel’s Forest at Tokyo DisneySea, and World of Frozen at Hong Kong Disneyland. Previous possible additions noted in the plan included Frozen entertainment akin to what’s available at Hong Kong Disneyland coming to Disney California Adventure. The proposal also included Peter Pan and Tangled expansions at Disneyland Park, although the only expansions we definitely know about are so far limited to California Adventure. ©Disney In August of 2024, the D23 Ultimate Fan Event revealed details about the new Pandora: World of Avatar expansion coming to California Adventure. We learned that it will be unlike the version in Florida and will feature all-new adventures based on Avatar: The Way of Water, Avatar: Fire and Ash, and more upcoming Avatar films. ©Disney The new land will also boast a brand-new boat ride billed as a “thrilling excursion that will bring all the action, excitement, and wonder of Avatar, taking guests all the way to the wide-open seas of Pandora,” according to Disney. ©Disney At the same event, Disney announced that Disney California Adventure’s Avengers Campus would also be getting an expansion! The land will incorporate two new attractions: Avengers Infinity Defense and Stark Flight Lab. ©Disney This expansion isn’t technically part of DisneylandForward, but it will be part of the plans that ultimately shape Disneyland altogether over the next decade. Avengers Infinity Defense will have guests join in battle across the multiverse alongside the Avengers to defeat King Thanos and recover stolen Stark technology. Also announced at D23, Coco is coming to the Disneyland Resort! The popular Pixar film is getting a new boat ride attraction also at California Adventure! The ride will break ground in 2026 and, according to Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro, music will “play an important role in this attraction just as it does in so many of our attractions.” D’Amaro also teased some advanced technology on the ride, saying, “D’Amaro went on to say, “Walt Disney Imagineering will draw inspiration for the attraction from beloved classics, like Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean. We’re bringing our skeletal cast of characters to life in a big way through the latest Audio-Animatronics technology. These figures will appear in ways you’ll have to see to believe.” ©Disney And there you have it!
