Review: New Jumbo Pretzel in (where else?) Epcot’s Germany Pavilion

Recommended Posts

If one snack has become associated indelibly with Disney Parks on both the east and west coasts, it’s the Mickey Pretzel. I mean, it’s Mickey-shaped, it’s portable, it’s pretzel. (And now it comes with cheese sauce just about everywhere — so yum!)

But let’s be real: If you want an authentic pretzel experience, where the texture, color, and flavor combine for pretzel perfection, you gotta head over to the Germany Pavilion in World Showcase.

It’s in this Bavarian-inspired palace that you’ll find the king of all portable snacks: the Jumbo Pretzel.

Thankfully, it’s available at beer carts in Germany, so these snacktime BFFs can keep each other company. Don’t you think beer and a Jumbo Pretzel sound like they’re made for each other?

See? They even look cozy on the sign.

In case you’re already in line for a Bratwurst or a Frankfurter over at Sommerfest, the Jumbo Pretzel is there, too.

But, okay. Let’s get to the nitty gritty. In the past, Germany had some great Authentic German Pretzels — and they were so good, we grabbed the recipe so we could make them at home. We are happy to report that the Jumbo Pretzel is just as awesome — but, um, JUMBO sized!

That’s not a snack-sized plate, folks. It’s a regular-sized entree plate, and it’s unable to contain all of that German-y pretzelness.

Such an impressive and conspicuous snack. In fact, we were stopped multiple times whilst walking around with the Jumbo Pretzel by people who were a) dazzled by its size and b) suddenly very hungry for German-made carbohydrates.

Of course, details matter, and this twisted dough features all of the prerequisites of a good pretzel. It’s got gorgeous color contrast between that deep brown exterior and the pale interior.

It reveals that dense interior through burst seams and is happily home to large salt crystals that enhance the flavor of the dough.

The texture is spot-on — dense and slightly chewy and tear-able.

Of course, a pretzel must have a dark and tap-able exterior, and that’s all good here too. It’s like all shades of brown in a continuum of oven-baked joy.

And in case you need a little mustard with your Jumbo Pretzel, there’s Gulden’s Spicy Brown Mustard to grab as well.

We wish we could tell you that the price isn’t jumbo on this one… but it kind of is. You can get your Jumbo Pretzel at beer carts for $10 and at Sommerfest for $9.39. So that might feel a little rich.

But this thing is massive — it’s definitely share-able or (if you are averse to sharing) big enough for a (admittedly carb-loaded) meal. And the quality of the Jumbo Pretzel will not disappoint.
