Review: Hurricane Hanna’s Waterside Bar and Grille in Disney World

You know how sometimes we tell you about a slightly out-of-the-way place and say it’s totally worth the effort to get there? This will not be one of those times. Hurricane Hanna’s Waterside Bar and Grille is located adjacent to (the stupendously awesome) Stormalong Bay at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts and offers alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks and a small menu of snacks for hungry swimmers (and any hungry passersby).

The style of this outdoor bar is slightly nautical, with clean lines and neat hanging lanterns. There’s seating at the bar, which is covered and provides some shade.

There are also several tables, some with umbrellas, right across the walkway from the bar.

And of course, being poolside, you get some refreshing views! This is a view of Hurricane Hanna’s from across the Bay’s lazy river.

Almost five years ago, Hanna’s underwent a renovation that freshened up the look and added a small appetizer menu. And we were excited to hear that it was tasty! We are fans of some pool bars (Oasis Bar and Grill at the Poly comes to mind, and I loved my visit to Cabana Bar and Beach Club at the Swan and Dolphin recently!), so we had high hopes for Hurricane Hanna’s. They even added a counter service ordering area on the right side of the bar for those who just want eats.

Sadly on this recent visit, Hanna’s was a massive dud. I started with a couple of drinks, which is not a bad way to start. And they’re so pretty!

The Bourbon and Strawberry Sour is a mixture of Bulleit Bourbon, fresh Lemon Juice, Strawberry Purée, and Sweet-and-Sour topped with Sprite®. It’s a tasty blend of sweet and sour, plus it’s a lovely shade of pink. This is basically grown up strawberry lemonade, and it’s super refreshing.

The Blueberry Lemonade is a combo of Three Olives Blueberry Vodka, Odwalla Lemonade, Lemon and Pomegranate Juice, and Bols Blue Curacao bringing the Stormalong blue. This is a refreshing drink, too, suited for a hot summer day along the Bay.

Sadly it all went downhill from there. No more fun. No more excitement. Just… meh.

First up were some forgettable Popcorn Shrimp with a Trio of Sauces. The shrimp were fried well — dark and crispy. But they didn’t wow me at all.

They do get points for being a lovely golden brown, though. But honestly, for $7.99, the portion was kinda small.

Next up were some Buffalo Chicken Nuggets which, well, are pretty hard to screw up. So these were okay. But there’s nothing special here. Props for providing extra Buffalo sauce along with the bleu cheese dip.

Now for the most disappointing part of the meal: Truffle Fries. Okay, the fries on the current menu are “Sea Salt” fries, which might be what I actually got. But the menu when I visited said Truffle, and there was no truffle oil to be found whatsoever. And I had to remind the cast members that I ordered them. Twice. So, sad side of Truffle Fries with no truffle that didn’t get to me for wayyyyy too long and were cold when they finally did get there. Nope.

So look, we don’t necessarily have the highest hopes for pool bars. They aren’t a destination for the average Disney World guest. But this was still a totally boring and unmemorable visit, and that’s a total bummer for guests who need a bite to eat while chilling out at Stormalong Bay. Honestly, we think making a mid-day ADR at Beaches and Cream on your Stormalong Bay day is a much better plan.
