#DisneyMagicMoments: Adventures at Home – Iceland

Welcome to the next chapter of “Adventures at Home,” a series that brings you customized at-home experiences inspired by some of our most popular Adventures by Disney destinations. Today we say “Velkominn” to Iceland as we virtually explore the majestic natural wonders, local traditions and culinary flair of this vibrant Nordic nation.

1. Discover the Land of Fire and Ice

Iceland’s unique landscape has been adorned with imposing waterfalls, otherworldly valleys, monumental glaciers and stunning volcanoes. Experience the breathtaking sights of the land of fire and ice with this virtual tour featuring highlights from Adventures by Disney. TIP: Many streaming devices and smart TVs allow you to mirror your smart device/computer and play videos directly on the big screen.

2. Nordic Fun

You can always count on the Adventure Guides to have the ultimate toolkit for fun and entertaining. Here is an exciting family game that will test your guessing abilities, with an Icelandic twist. Just print this game guide and get ready to identify the animals, places and things you can encounter while adventuring in Iceland!

3. Geyser Bread!

Iceland’s unique rúgbrauð is a dark rye bread cooked by placing the dough into covered pots and burying them near geothermal springs. The steam from the springs does the baking and the result is a dense, almost cake-like loaf of bread that tastes a bit like caramel. We know most of us don’t have a geothermal spring handy but one of our Icelandic Adventure Guides shared a hack to make this delicious doughy goodness at home. Ingredients:

• 1 Cup rye flour
• 1/3 Cup whole wheat flour
• 1 Tsp baking powder
• ½ Tsp baking soda
• 1 ¼ Cups of buttermilk
• 5 Tbsp golden syrup 
• A pinch of salt

Instructions:

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F, and line and grease a 1 Lb loaf pan
2. Mix all the ingredients with a spoon until you reach a similar consistency to oatmeal
3. Pour mix into a loaf pan and cover loosely with foil (the dough will rise so give the foil a dome shape)
4. Place in the oven and lower the heat to 225 degrees F
5. Bake for 7 hours
6. Remove from the oven and cool

4. Icelandic Legends!

Iceland has a rich history of folklore and legends. Throughout our itinerary, Adventure Guides regale adventurers with entertaining tales of trolls, elves and hidden people that inhabit the majestic and mysterious landscapes of this Nordic island. Our friends from Disney Family shared instructions to create a delicious treat inspired by the magical stone trolls from Frozen. Fun fact: Iceland influenced the visual design and the story of Frozen 2.
