Disney Cruise Line’s new ship is literally coming together with less than 10 months before its Port Canaveral debut. The Disney Wish is currently under construction at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenberg, Germany, set to become the line’s fifth ship, the first in a new class, and sail from Central Florida next June. Images posted to the Disney Parks blog last week show what will become a 144,000 gross ton vessel still in building-block form, of which there are nearly 100 of them. In the post by Philip Gennotte with Walt Disney Imagineering, he highlights the near completion of the ship’s bridge, known as the wheelhouse, and bow blocks. (Robert Fiebak/Disney Cruise Line) “We have all eagerly awaited this moment, as this block will truly give the Disney Wish an identity,” Gennotte said. “I would even go as far as saying that it gives our ship a face.” The bow work is one of the most iconic part of Disney Cruise Line ships, each featuring a signature character designed in filigree. Disney Wish’s bow presence will be taken by Captain Minnie. The bow block, which weighs 500 metric tons, was lifted into place during a recent 10-hour run. The ship still has about 30 more blocks to be put together, and then work can continue on all the exterior and interior spaces. That includes the new Mickey & Minnie-themed water ride called the AquaMouse, a unique mix of dark ride and water coaster that takes the place of the AquaDuck water coaster found on the line’s Disney Dream and Fantasy. The ship is the first of three on order from the cruise line, all larger than its existing four ships, but will have the same number of staterooms: 1,250. All three will be powered by liquefied natural gas, a cleaner burning fuel than the diesel most ships use now. It will be second such ship to home port at Port Canaveral after Carnival’s Mardi Gras debut in July. The scheduled maiden voyage for Disney Wish is a special five-night sailing from Port Canaveral on June 9, 2022, after which it will run three- and four-night Bahamas sailings with visits to the line’s private island Castaway Cay. Bookings opened up for the ship on disneycruise.com last May. Richard Tribou Orlando Sentinel
