The golden statues fashioned after Disney characters are being installed now at Magic Kingdom as part of the 50th-anniversary celebration of Walt Disney World.

About a dozen characters appeared in the theme park Thursday morning, and visitors flocked to them for photo opportunities.

Although it is a Disney production, not all of the statues will magically appear at once. Look for them in waves across Magic Kingdom, Epcot, Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Mickey Mouse, naturally, is in the first batch near Cinderella Castle alongside Minnie Mouse. Some characters are grouped in twos, such as Chip and Dale or Winnie the Pooh and Piglet. In the first phase, most figures were around the castle and on Main Street U.S.A.

Jaime Noble, a travel agent who lives in Sanford, snapped photos of figures Thursday afternoon. She knew they were in the works, but the timing of her visit was accidental, she said.

“I’m taking advantage of a few hours to take some photos” which she will post online, she said, “so people who can’t make it down for the 50th can look at them and see how beautiful they are.”

She declined to pick a favorite.

“I love them all,” Noble said. “They are larger than I thought they were going to be.”

Eventually, golden statues of 50 characters of all sizes will be seen spread across the resort's theme parks.

The characters — also known as the Disney Fab 50 — are sized proportionately, so Goofy towers above the on-all-fours Pluto. The Goofy statue is about 4 feet tall. Timothy Q. Mouse stands on the tip of Dumbo’s trunk.

Tinker Bell’s figure is appropriately tiny and tucked up in the trees. Each statue has a version of the 50th-anniversary seal incorporated. Despite their joyful poses, droplets of rain from a Florida thunderstorm formed on the figures and their pedestals.

There is no announced schedule of which characters will appear when. Disney revealed their identities via various social media platforms.

Previous smaller statues in the gardens near the Magic Kingdom hub are no longer there, but the Partners statue of Walt Disney with Mickey remains at the center of the hub.

The 50th-anniversary celebration officially starts Oct. 1 and is scheduled to last 18 months.

Noble said she was happy that the festivities would be lengthy.

“With everything that’s gone on the past year, people need a reason to celebrate,” she said.
