Disney is no stranger to lawsuits, but this latest one is a doozy.

Elon Musk is bankrolling a suit brought against Disney by Gina Carano, who played Cara Dune in the Disney+ series The Mandalorian. She is suing Disney for discrimination and wrongful termination, claiming she was fired for sharing her political beliefs on social media. But, Carano has a history of making controversial statements on the internet.

Carano, an MMA fighter turned actress, filed a complaint in California federal court against Disney and Lucasfilm. The lawsuit alleges that she was fired for sharing her Republican opinions on social media.

A victory in this case would require Lucasfilm to recast her and pay at least $75,000 and punitive damages. Carano was fired in 2021 after she shared a post that implied that “being a Republican is like being Jewish during the Holocaust.” She had often posted on social media, primarily X, about sensitive topics about her right-wing opinions.

In the wake of the new suit, we’re taking a look at some of Carano’s most controversial statements.

Back in 2020, Carano failed to show support for Black Lives Matter on X (then Twitter). She said, “In my experience, screaming at someone that they are a racist when they are indeed NOT a racist & any post and/or research you do will show you those exact facts, then I’m sorry, these people are not ‘educators’. They are cowards and bullies.” (Deadline)

Later, she was also accused of making transphobic social media posts. When Carano was encouraged to add preferred pronouns to her Twitter bio, she resisted and then add added “boop/bop/beep” instead. She then posted, “They’re mad cuz I won’t put pronouns in my bio to show my support for trans lives. After months of harassing me in every way. I decided to put 3 VERY controversial words in my bio.. beep/bop/boop” and “I’m not against trans lives at all. They need to find less abusive representation.”

After Carano received criticism for her actions, she admitted her Mandalorian costar Pedro Pascal “helped [her] understand why people were putting [pronouns] in their bios. I didn’t know before but I do now. I won’t be putting them in my bio but good for all you who choose to. I stand against bullying, especially the most vulnerable & freedom to choose.”

In the wake of the 2020 presidential election, Carano posted tweets in support of Donald Trump, questioning the election results, saying, “We need to clean up the election process so we are not left feeling the way we do today. Put laws in place that protect us against voter fraud.”

During the COVID-19 pandemic, she shared numerous anti-mask memes on Twitter, condemning the recommended safety precautions in place at the time (November 2020.)

Perhaps Carano’s most controversial post, though, came in February 2021 when she made a particularly incendiary post on Instagram.

It read, “Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors… even by children… Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views?”

This led to the hashtag #FireGinaCarano to trend with Lucasfilm releasing a statement indicating she was not currently employed by the company and that they had “no plans for her to be in the future.”

“Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable,” the statement said.

Now, Carano is suing Disney with the help of Elon Musk, claiming that she was fired for sharing her Republican beliefs on social media. Disney has yet to make a statement at this time, but we’ll let you know if that changes.
