Gina Carano‘s Hollywood career has been a topic of contention for years. In 2021, #FireGinaCarano became a trending Twitter campaign following Carano’s association with a controversial image reposted online. Disney took notice and ultimately fired the actress via a statement from a Lucasfilm spokesperson.

Since her termination, the actress has been pretty vocal, even teaming up with Elon Musk (fellow Disney critic) to file a complaint in California federal court against Disney and Lucasfilm. The lawsuit is ongoing, but Carano still has more to say.

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gina Carano shared her side of the story after being “canceled” by Disney and the internet. Echoing her previous statements, Carano believes that she was fired for sharing her Republican opinions on social media and feels “unfairly targeted and bullied both by the public and her work peers,” per The Hollywood Reporter.

Carano’s lawsuit states, “Defendants (Disney and Lucasfilm) went so far as to try and convince Carano’s publicist to force Carano to issue a statement admitting to mocking or insulting an entire group of people, which Carano had never done.” The claim is referring to a post that Carano shared stating, “being a Republican is like being Jewish during the Holocaust.” This was one of several social media posts the actress shared about her right-wing opinions.

When asked about the situation and subsequent firing, Carano told The Hollywood Reporter, “I just laid down and cried and cried,” adding, “I curled into a fetal position. It’s not that I didn’t think that something like that could happen. It was that I couldn’t imagine they would put out this horrendous statement about me after working with me — the most powerful entertainment company in the world saying that about me.”

Here’s What Carano Said Before Her Termination

In a statement announcing Carano’s termination, a Lucasfilm spokesperson said, “Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future. Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.

Carano went on to praise Elon Musk, the person responsible for funding her lawsuit against Disney, for helping her “fight back” against what she called “one of the most aggressive unnecessary cancellations in Hollywood history.” Carano has yet to directly speak with Musk.

The actress admitted that she resisted participating in a Disney-ordered Zoom meeting with 45 members of Disney and Lucasfilm’s LGBTQ affinity group. She later stated that she has no regrets about how she handled things. The lawsuit is ongoing, but Carano shared she’s not interested in the money. Instead, she explained, “I’m thinking about clearing my name. I’m thinking about finally being healthier and having this monkey off my back and telling my story and just getting on with my life. Finally.”
