Disney4me
So this is probably the worst possible snack news that we could’ve woken up to this morning. Cinderella Castle One of the BEST treats/snacks/breakfast items in Magic Kingdom is GONE. And we are NOT OK. One of our favorite places to grab food in Magic Kingdom is Sleepy Hollow Refreshments in Liberty Square. Sleepy Hollow Before today, the menu at Sleepy Hollow included a regular waffle (not Mickey-shaped) with chocolate-hazelnut spread, berries, and bananas. Fresh Fruit Waffle Sandwich There was also a sweet-and-spicy chicken waffle sandwich with cole slaw, made with the same waffle. These waffles were AMAZING. I literally got one every time I visited the park. Sweet-and-Spicy Chicken-Waffle Sandwich However, now the normal waffles are gone and there are only Mickey waffles available. Personally, I liked the regular waffles here more than the Mickey-shaped ones, so I’m sad to see those go. Although you can now get Mickey waffle platters with similar ingredients to the sandwiches that were previously available, there’s no option that combines berries and bananas — you have to choose between berries with powdered sugar and whipped cream or bananas with chocolate-hazelnut spread and whipped cream. New Menu The new menu includes the following: Mickey waffle with berries, powdered sugar, and whipped cream — $8.49 Mickey waffle with chocolate-hazelnut spread, bananas, and whipped cream — $8.49 Mickey waffle with Sweet-and-Spicy Maple Chicken — $11.59 Funnel cake with berries, powdered sugar, and whipped cream — $8.49 Funnel cake with chocolate-hazelnut spread, bananas, and whipped cream — $8.49 Hand-dipped corn dog served with house-made chips — $11.49 We tried out all the new items to see how they stack up against the previous waffle sandwiches. Overall, we have to say that we’re very disappointed by these changes. The Mickey waffles are very soft and not crispy like the old waffles were. Full Spread The Mickey Waffles are more of a spongey, almost pancake texture, so when you add lots of toppings, especially soft toppings like fruit and whipped cream, they get slippery — almost slimy (gross) — and lose a lot of their structure. While we don’t want to squash anyone’s Sleepy Hollow breakfast dreams, we have to be honest! We are not fans of this change. But let’s get into the details. First, we tried the Mickey waffle with berries, powdered sugar, and whipped cream. Fruit Mickey Waffle The berries were juicy and fresh on top, and the whipped cream tasted delicious! However, that’s where our positive notes end. Fruit Mickey Waffle The softness of the waffle was really disappointing — it’s not the same as the old fresh fruit waffle sandwich at all. If you loved the old one, don’t expect this to be an equal replacement. Fruit Mickey Waffle But if you aren’t devastated by the loss of the original waffle sandwich, you might appreciate this Mickey waffle! Even though we didn’t like the texture, all of the ingredients tasted good. Fruit Mickey Waffle Then, we got the Mickey waffle with chocolate-hazelnut spread, bananas, and whipped cream. Chocolate-Hazelnut Banana Mickey Waffle We liked the flavor of this one a little more! The chocolate-hazelnut spread is very tasty (it’s basically Nutella), and the banana slices were fresh. Chocolate-Hazelnut Banana Mickey Waffle We had the same textural issue here: The waffle was just too soft to support the toppings. But the flavors were great. Chocolate-Hazelnut Banana Mickey Waffle To break up all the sweetness, we grabbed the Mickey waffle with Sweet-and-Spicy Maple Chicken. Sweet-and-Spicy Maple Chicken Mickey Waffle You get a LOT of chicken on top of the waffle, which we think makes this a great value. The chicken reminded us of the sweet glaze on orange chicken at some fast-food Chinese restaurants. It had just a hint of spice but not too much, so unless you’re 100% spice-averse, you should be fine. Sweet-and-Spicy Maple Chicken Mickey Waffle The waffle itself didn’t have any flavor, so if you ate any bites without the chicken, it was pretty bland. But the bites together with the waffle were well-balanced. Sweet-and-Spicy Maple Chicken Mickey Waffle Finally, we got the Funnel cake with chocolate-hazelnut spread, bananas, and whipped cream. Chocolate-Hazelnut Banana Funnel Cake This one was our favorite item that we had today! The funnel cake has a closer consistency to the old waffle, in that it’s crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. However, it still doesn’t have the integrity because it breaks apart easily. Chocolate-Hazelnut Banana Funnel Cake The taste of the funnel cake and toppings together was excellent. Once the toppings had been on it for a while, it still got soft, though. Chocolate-Hazelnut Banana Funnel Cake It’s definitely a large enough portion to share if you get it as a snack, or it makes a great, hearty (albeit VERY sweet) breakfast. Chocolate-Hazelnut Banana Funnel Cake There’s one bit of good news here: the Mickey waffle platters count as a snack credit on the Disney Dining Plan! This is a great use of a snack credit, as you get a pretty big meal. Stay tuned to DFB for more updates on the latest Disney food news!
