Step Aside, ‘Frozen.’ Disney’s NEW Release Just Surpassed a 5-Year Old Record

Pixar just smashed a box office record.

Inside Out 2 Preview at Walt Disney Presents

Last month, Disney and Pixar released Inside Out 2, the sequel to the Academy Award-winning 2015 original. The film, which follows emotions including Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, and Fear as they guide the mind of teenager Riley Andersen as she navigates puberty, was highly anticipated, but no one suspected how successful it was going to become.

Just about a month after its release, Disney has confirmed that Inside Out 2 has dethroned Frozen II to become the highest-grossing animated film of ALL-TIME, with a gross of approximately $1.46 billion worldwide.

In addition to that accolade, the film was the first billion-dollar feature of 2024, is already the 13th highest-grossing film overall of all-time globally, and holds the record for the fastest animated film to reach $1 billion in gross, having done so in just 19 days. Domestically, Inside Out 2 has made over $600 million in the United States, per Disney.

Alan Bergman, Co-Chairman of Disney Entertainment, spoke of the achievement with pride, saying, “Inside Out 2 is a quintessentially Pixar film, and it’s been amazing to see how it has connected so deeply with people all over the world. We knew it was really special, but no one could have predicted it would reach these record-breaking heights. We’re grateful to all the fans who have made this the biggest animated film ever.”

Pixar released a statement on X (formerly Twitter) that read, “We’re filled with Joy! Thanks to every fan around the world for making Inside Out 2 the biggest animated movie of all time.” It was accompanied by a note from director Kelsey Mann and Mark Neilson, which read, “We are absolutely blown away by all the love for Inside Out 2 from around the world. Thank you for joining us on this incredible emotional rollercoaster.” Meanwhile, Disney Feature Animation also took to X with a message of congratulations and a “passing of the torch” from Frozen II. They wrote, “Everyone from Arendelle and Walt Disney Animation Studios is sending warm hugs to all of @Pixar on their incredible achievement as Inside Out 2 becomes animation’s biggest movie ever.”
